Significance; local level, architecture* c. 1917 The A.C. Humphrey Warehouse was b u i l t between 1913 and 1922, but most

li k e l y in 1916 or 1917. I t serves cis a historical reminder of the flourishing v*iolesale grocery trade v*iich emerged in Stamford before Wbrld War I , aind is the best surviving example of commercial masonry work in the city .

During Stamford's f i r s t three or four decades of existence i t developed a healthy vAiolesale grocery industry. The T.M. Radford Ccmpany arrived in 1904, the H.O. Wboten Grocery Company opened in 1905, Waples-Platter Ccnpany in 1909 and the Walker Smith Ccmpany in 1915. The H.O. WDOten Grocery Company decided to expand i t s operations, and in 1916 purchased tihe lots vihidi the present building occupies. Soon thereafter they b u i l t this large and handscane structure.

Although this building was essentially a wardx)use, the ccmpany spent extra irtxiey to oonstruct ein ornate structure v^ich was b u i l t by skilled craftsmen from quality materials. Mcuny of Stamford's early commercial structiares were b u i l t of similcu: materials at a similaur or higher level of craftsmanship. Regrettably, most of these buildings are either gone or heavily modified (usually stuccoed), so tiiat the high-quality brickwork is now c*)literated. The A.C. Hjmphrey Warehouse is the last, emd largest, remaining example of high-quality commercial masonry l e f t i n the ci t y , cis well as being the best preserved and best b u i l t of a l l Stamford's surviving weirehouse structures.
