White Coat Ceremony Class of 2023
Welcome students, parents, families, friends, and faculty members to this milestone event honoring our first year medical students, as they declare their professional commitment to the clinical care of patients. The presentation and cloaking of the white coat – a symbolic mantle of the medical profession – confers a commitment to the cherished values of being a physician: humanism, compassion, altruism, leadership, excellence, and devotion to the well-being of others. The Dean’s Office, in concert with the Colleges Advisory Program and the Class of 2023, proudly sponsors this event.
The Colleges Advisory Program (CAP), the student-faculty learning community at the School of
Medicine, supports the first year class in hosting its White Coat Ceremony. CAP was founded in 2005
by our deans and student leaders in an effort to enhance clinical skills teaching, career advising,
professional formation, and students’ relationships with faculty, patients, and each other.
The School of Medicine actively supports students in their journey to become physicians, and tonight’s
ceremony marks an important milestone on this path. We appreciate your presence as we join together
in celebrating our students’ accomplishments and their commitment to serve their future patients with
extraordinary devotion and compassion.
We are thrilled to welcome you to our virtual event today as we celebrate the Class of 2023!

Statement of Values
The purpose of this Statement of Values is to outline principles that the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Class
of 2023 will abide by during our medical training and throughout our careers. We understand that these values may
sometimes be challenged during our training, but we promise to uphold them to the best of our abilities. This year and every
year, we recognize our duty to hold these values steadfast and to stand up against injustice for ourselves and our patients.
Respect
• To treat patients with care and dignity by being culturally sensitive and cultivating an open and safe environment for all
• To be present while providing care by listening attentively and communicating kindly with our patients and colleagues
• To promote mutual respect by seeking to understand others and valuing their ideas, gifts, expertise, and identities
Advocacy
• To advocate for the undeniable humanity of all individuals, support their self-worth, and defend them against injustice
• To uplift the voices of all patients, especially those whose voices are often unheard or ignored
• To educate ourselves about and work against systemic factors that propagate health disparities and barriers to care in our
institution and community
• To recognize and confront our implicit biases while practicing in our community
Community
• To cultivate trust with the surrounding Baltimore community by engaging with community members and ensuring that
their voices are represented in our health programs and initiatives
• To recognize that our oath to “do no harm” also applies to our impact on the communities we serve
• To advocate for the needs of the community and oppose initiatives that may negatively impact the community or its
residents
Integrity
• To speak up when we hear or see others perpetuating systems of oppression including, but not limited to, racism, sexism,
ableism, and classism
• To serve others without consideration of personal gain or recognition
• To fulfill our duties as practitioners and assume responsibility for our actions and decisions
• To strive to be leaders who promote a culture of accountability, respect, humanity, and excellence
Empathy
• To put patients’ interests above our own and recognize that they may seek help from us in times of personal vulnerability
• To nurture trusting relationships with our patients by seeing them as human beings first and by listening with empathy to
their lived experiences and individual needs
• To approach our patients and peers without judgment and make them feel seen, heard, and valued
• To care for ourselves in an effort to live whole and balanced lives in and beyond the practice of medicine
Collaboration
• To create a thriving medical community by partnering with and learning from our patients, their families, and other
members of the caregiving team
• To promote one another’s well-being and learning through a culture of support, interdependence, and collective trust
• To build an environment that facilitates meaningful, transformative learning for all
• To recognize our limitations as physicians and individuals and ask for help and guidance when needed
• To serve as mentors for future medical students or trainees whenever possible, recognizing that we would not be here
without the support of those who came before us
Curiosity
• To work to advance the field of medicine through our willingness to confront its shortcomings, our drive to ask difficult
questions, and our initiative to discover that which is currently unknown
• To pursue knowledge that enhances clinical practice, alleviates suffering, and advances the art and science of medicine
• To be humble, life-long learners and apply creativity, passion, and self-reflection in all our pursuits
