    Nara (), about 42 km (26 mi.) south of Kyoto, was the oldcapital of Japan (710784), and was the cradle of Japans arts,crafts and literature. Buddhism first flourished here under the

    strong patronage of successive Emperors. Walking through thecitys quiet streets is like strolling through the pages of history.Here, you can find peace of mind and spiritual contentment.

Many of the historical relicsof Nara are conveniently located in or close to this finely wood-ed park.

    Todaiji Temple () is well known for the Daibutsu,16.2 m (53.1 ft.)-high bronze statue of Buddha. The main edificewhich houses the Daibutsu is the worlds largest wooden struc-

    ture. Admission: 500. Open: 7:3017:30 (Apr.Sep.),7:3017:00 (Oct.), 8:0016:30 (Nov.Feb.), 8:0017:00 (Mar.).

    Kasuga Taisha Shrine () was founded in 768 and isone of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan. The vermilionlacquered buildings form a beautiful contrast to the surroundingverdant woods.

    Shin-Yakushiji Temple () was founded in 747. Itsmain hall, dating from the same year, and several Buddhistimages enshrined here, are designated as National Treasure.Admission: 600. Open: 9:0017:00.

    Nara National Museum () exhibits a valuablecollection of ancient works of art, particularly the selected mas-

    terpieces of Buddhist art. Open: 9:3017:00. Admission: 500.Closed: Mon. and New Year's holidays.

    Sarusawa-ike Pond (), near the Kofukuji Temple, withthe five-storied pagoda of the temple reflected on its surface, haslong been known as one of the most popular sights in Nara.

    Kofukuji Temple () was founded in 710. At the heightof its prosperity, the temple had as many as 175 buildings, butmost of them were reduced to ashes during the passing of 1,300years time. The principal buildings still existing are the Five-Storied Pagoda dating from 1426, the Eastern Main Hall

    (Tokondo Hall) from 1415 and the Three-Storied Pagoda fromearly 13 th century. The Treasure House and Tokondo Hall areopen daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Enter 1hr. before the closing time.Admission: 500 (Treasure House) and 300 (Tokondo Hall).

    Wakakusayama Hill (), alt. 342m, to the north of theKasuga Taisha Shrine, is covered with grass, which is burnt everyyear on the night of fourth Saturday of January by fires lightedhere and there at its foot. It is called Yamayaki, which meansburning of dead grass on mountain slopes. Open period & timeof Wakakusayama Hill: 9:0017:00. (mid-Mar. mid-Jun, & earlySep.late Nov.) Admission: 150.

    Toshodaiji Temple () , 7-min. walk from Kintetsu-Nishinokyo Sta. is the most valuable of the surviving structures ofthe 8th century. It was built in 759 by Ganjin, an illustrious Chinese priest of the Tang Dynasty. The chief object of worship in theMain Hall is a 3.3 m (11ft.)-high dry lacquer statue of Birushana. Admission: 600.     Yakushiji Temple () founded in 680, preserves many National Treasure as statues of Yakushi sanzonzo and importantcultural properties. It is admired for its 37.9 m (124ft.)-high Three-Storied East Pagoda which still retains its original form. Open:8:3017:00. Admission: 800 (Jan. 1- 5, Mar. 1- Jun. 15, Sep. 16- Nov. 25 when Genjosanzoin-garan opens.) 500 (whenGenjosanzoin-garan close.)

    Horyuji Temple () , 12 min. by JR train from JR Nara Sta. to Horyuji Sta. (210), then 20-min. walk or 5 min. by NaraKotsu Bus (170) which runs hourly, is one of the most magnificent repositories of the architectural, sculptural and pictorial art

    objects of Japan. The temple was founded in 607 by Prince Shotoku, the great protector of Buddhism. It comprises about fifty build-ings and some of them have been ascertained as the oldest wooden structures extant in the world. The most noteworthy of theHoryuji buildings are the Nandaimon (South Great Gate), the Kondo (Main Hall), the Shoryoin (Sacred Spirit Hall), the Five-StoriedPagoda, the Daikodo (Lecture Hall) and the Yumedono (Hall of Dreams), a beautiful octagonal structure built in 739. All these build-ings are registered as National Treasures. Admission: 1,000. Open: 8:0017:00 (Feb. 22Nov. 3), 8:0016:30 (Nov. 4Feb. 21).

    Chuguji Temple (), a convent near the East Temple of Horyuji, is noted for its Nyoirin Kannon Goddess, a woodenBuddhist image of the 7th century. Admission: 500. Open: 9:0016:00 (Oct. 1Mar. 20), 9:0016:30 (Mar. 21Sep. 30).

    Horinji Temple (), northeast of the Horyuji Temple, is an ancient temple founded in 622. The main object of worship inthe Kodo (Lecture Hall) is a seated wooden image of Yakushi-Nyorai. Admission: 400. Open: 8:0017:00 (Mar. Nov.),8:0016:30 (Dec.Feb.)

    Hokiji Temple () , northeast of the Horyuji Temple, was founded in 638. The outstanding attraction of the Hokiji Templeis its Three-Storied Pagoda, said to date from 706 and generally considered the oldest example of its kind. Admission: 300.
