Review
Are you ready to review?
A few pointers: Know your ion names and formulas
– “A” ions - “B” ions - polyatomics
– Be able to tell which cations (positive ions) make
multiple charges; they need roman numerals in
the name
Oxidation numbers: know how to determine
them
– Remember neutral elements = 0
– Oxygen is often -2 (except in peroxide)
– Hydrogen is +1 with nonmetals and in acids; -1
with nonmetals
– The more electronegative element gets the more
negative oxidation number
A few pointers (continued): Acids
– Know when to use the hydro- prefix: only for
binary (2 element) acids, never for acids with
polyatomics
– -ate -ic ; -ite -ous
Know your number prefixes and when to use
them: only for binary (2 element) nonmetal
compounds (ex: CO2, PCl5).
Formulas for ionic compounds are written in
the lowest whole number ratio (ex: lead (IV)
oxide = PbO2 NOT Pb2O4)

Question 1: Which of these acids
would NOT use the prefix hydro-
in its name?
A) HCl
B) HClO3
C) H2S
D) HF
Names & Formulas Review
Answer 1:
A) HCl = hydrochloric acid
B) HClO3 = chloric acid
C) H2S = hydrosulfuric acid
D) HF = hydrofluoric acid
Remember, acids made from
polyatomic ions DO NOT use the
hydro- prefix, so choice B is the
answer.

Question 4: What is the oxidation
number of sulfur (S) in the
following compound?
Na2SO4
Names & Formulas Review
Answer 4: What is the oxidation
number of sulfur (S) in the following
compound?
Na2SO4, the oxidation number of S is +6
Na’s oxidation number is +1; O’s is -2.
They all have to add up to zero
2(+1) + 4(-2) + S = 0; S = +6
