Tickling Our Funny Bones with Computer ArtBy Colleen Messina

People have used pencils and paintbrushes to create art for centuries.Today, artists have a new tool. Computer art is a whole new art style that can tickle our funny bones.

Computer art is any art created with the help of a computer. Computer art is used for ads. It is used on TV. And it is used to make movies. Computer artists have created Buzz Lightyear and other computer art friends to make us laugh.

Computer-aided design is called CAD. Not too long ago, computer games had flat shapes. These shapes chased each other across the screen. And that was it! Today, CAD is used to design everything from toys to space shuttles. You probably like CAD best in movies, though. Toy Story was the first computer-animated film. Pixar made the film in 1995. It won awards. Then, Pixar made a new movie. It became a huge hit. It was called A Bug's Life. Since then, many more computer-animated movies and television shows have been made.

You can still do beautiful art with paintbrushes and pencils. But you could also use a computer, too. They can help you create fantasy lands. They can help you make huge dinosaurs. They can help you make toys, bugs, and lost clown fish. You can easily find the perfect computer art to tickle your funny bone.

There is no limit to what CAD can do in the future. As Buzz Lightyear would say, "To infinity, and beyond!"

Thurgood MarshallBy Brenda B. Covert

Thurgood Marshall was the first black American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. That's the highest court in our country! The Supreme Court is made up of nine judges. We call them justices. They get the job from the president of the United States. He or she recommends each justice. Then a justice must be approved by Congress. The job is for life. A justice may be a justice until death. A justice may choose to resign or retire from the job. If a justice gets into trouble, he or she could be impeached. Marshall became a justice in 1967. He was chosen by President Lyndon Johnson. He was a justice until he retired in 1991. He was well known as a civil rights lawyer before he became a justice. His most famous case was Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954). That is the case that made segregation in public schools against the law. Thurgood Marshall devoted his life to fighting for human rights.

A Real BoyBy Jody Williams

"Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." Do puppets talk? Can boys turn into mules? If you lie, will your nose grow? Yes, in The Adventures of Pinocchio.

Carlo Lorenzini was born on November 24, 1826. He was born in Florence, Italy. He grew up in a place called Colodi. He changed his name to Carlo Colodi. Carlo became a writer. He wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio.

In the book, Pinocchio was a puppet. He was a marionette. A marionette is a puppet with strings. Its arms and legs can move. Pinocchio had to learn to be kind. If he lied, his nose grew. It went back to normal when he told the truth. Bad things happened to him. In the end, he became a real boy.

Colodi's story was not a children's story at first. He made some changes. He added a Blue Fairy to the story. The Blue Fairy saved Pinocchio. She then turned him into a real boy.

Walt Disney made Colodi's story into a movie. He changed a few things. He added characters. Jiminy Cricket was Pinocchio's friend. There were bad men that took Pinocchio away. He was almost turned into a donkey. Pinocchio saved his friends. They were being eaten by a whale.

Pinocchio had to show that he was brave. He had to tell the truth. He had to be kind. Then, he could become a real boy. The Blue Fairy was in the movie too. She turned him into a real boy.

Carlo Colodi died in 1890. He did not know how much people liked his work. He did not know that Pinocchio became a Disney movie. He didn't see Pinocchio as a real boy. He could only imagine.

Life On the TrailBy Mary Lynn Bushong

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk across a whole country? Many of the pioneers who moved west did just that. Even those with wagons walked most of the way because it was easier than being in the wagon.

Mornings on a wagon train started early. People were up before sunrise.Breakfast was often coffee, bacon, and dry bread. If the family had a milk cow, they might have milk for the small children to drink. Extra milk could be put in a crock in the back of the wagon. The wagon would bounce so much on the trail that it could churn the milk into butter.

By 7:00 in the morning, the wagons were repacked with bedding and cooking things. The oxen or horses would be re-hitched to the wagons. Then the wagons would be pulled into line for the day's march.

Very few people rode in the wagons. Few wagons had springs. This meant that every rock or hole in the trail would make the wagon bounce and shake. Everyone who could walked alongside.

Sometimes people became sick while they traveled. They could not walk and had to ride in the wagons.

As the people walked, they kept their eyes open for food. They brought along some things like salt, flour, coffee, bacon, and dried beans with them. Eating just those things would get boring. Fresh greens and berries tasted good. They also helped keep people healthy.

The wagon train moved slowly. This gave hunters plenty of opportunity to look for game animals. Those included squirrels, rabbits, geese, ducks, deer, antelope, bison, and others. These formed an important part of the pioneers' meals.

At noon, the wagons would stop again. This gave everyone a chance to rest and eat. The meal was often coffee with cold beans and some kind of meat that had been cooked at breakfast time. As soon as they were done, they would pack up and start moving again.

Toward the end of the afternoon, they could stop for the night. There was a lot of work to do before it got dark. The wagons were pulled into a circle and the animals unhitched. Men took care of the animals and made any needed repairs.

Women would build fires and cook supper. Meals would have some kind of meat or fish and rice or beans. Water would be fetched to cook with and make coffee.

After supper the children would have school lessons. It was important for them to learn to read and write. They also needed to know math. They would need it to measure their land, build a home, and keep track of money. Before going to their beds under the wagons, they would sing, dance, and tell stories around the fires.

Some wagon trains traveled every day. Some rested on Sundays. A rest day meant that the animals got a break. That meant the animals could spend a whole day eating. Women could wash and mend clothes in nearby streams.

Sometimes people got married or had babies on the trail. Even though they were traveling, life kept going on. Many people also died on the trail and were buried along the way.

Traveling along the trails was hard. People wanted new and better lives. They were willing to take chances in order to have them.

Calories are a measure of the energy value of foods. "Empty calories" are calories that will give you energy but little else in the way of nutrients that your body needs. It's better to eat foods that give you other good things that your body needs, not just empty calories.

Are you consuming a lot of empty calories? Candy and sodas have lots of calories and very little, if any, nutrients. Most of the calories in soda come from added sugar.

How much sugar is okay? The World Health Organization says you should limit sugar to five percent of your daily calories. For kids between the ages of six and eleven, that's about 5 teaspoons or 21 grams a day. One kind of soda has 52 grams in a 12 ounce can. That's more than 12 teaspoons of sugar!

Candy has sugar, too, and many candies are also high in fat. One chocolate bar has 13 grams of fat, and more than half of it is saturated fat. That kind of fat is solid at room temperature. It is the worst kind of fat for us to eat. Doughnuts are high in fat and sugars, too. One glazed doughnut has 12 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar!

Does that mean you can never eat these foods? No. Empty calories are okay in small amounts. Most people, though, eat too many of them. What can you do to cut back on sugar and fat? Read nutrition labels. You may be surprised at the amount of sugar and fat found in some foods. You can make better choices if you compare labels. Drink water when you're thirsty instead of sweetened drinks. Low fat or skim milk is a good drink choice for mealtimes. It gives your body calcium and vitamin D, as well as other nutrients. So read some food labels, and watch out for empty calories!

The U.S.S. Arizona MemorialBy Erin Horner

Caption: Inside the Arizona Memorial. The inscription reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN HERE ENTOMBED AND THEIR SHIPMATES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN ACTION ON DECEMBER 7, 1941, ON THE U.S.S. ARIZONA"

On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. Their two hour attack left more than two thousand people dead and destroyed many planes and battleships. One battleship, the U.S.S. Arizona, and its crew suffered terribly during the raid. Bombs dropped on the ship caused it to sink and killed 1,177 sailors. To this day, oil continues to leak from her silent skeleton. In 1961, a memorial was built over the top of the sunken ship. Now, more than one million visitors each year come to read the names of those who were aboard the Arizona and lost their lives on that December day. Many choose to leave flowers or leis in remembrance of those who died. The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is a sobering site. The American flag is proudly displayed above the memorial. It flies from a pole attached to the broken main mast of the battleship. It is a symbolic reminder; it reminds those visiting the memorial that our nation is still strong and united even after a tragedy as terrible as the attack on Pearl Harbor.
