OverviewThe Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)was founded in 1884 with Alexander Graham Bell andThomas Edison among its charter members.
Over 100,000 Student and Graduate Student Membersworldwide make up 27% of the membership of the IEEE andare essential to the continued growth and vitality of the IEEE.

Focus & Issues
• Student member retention • Problem faced while forming/operating a branch• How to collaborate with student branches in a section and other sections
• Roles and responsibilities • Section Student Activities Chair and SSR• Support provided by IEEE and benefits• Resources are available but are we using them??

Best Practices
Have an understanding of the resources, benefits, trainings available. A good place to start would be the Student Concourse (www.ieee.org/students).
Be sure to report newly elected Section Student Activities Chair ( Section’s SAC).Appoint Section Student Representative ( SSR).
Report your Officers: https://officers.vtools.ieee.org/
Report your yearly activities https://sbr.vtools.ieee.org/
Develop your yearly calendar. (Update: http://sac.ieeer10.org/ )

Best Practices
Connect with the Global Student Exchange Community within IEEE Collabratec™ (www.ieeecollabratec.org)
Start off your semester recruiting new students! Your Branch Chair can request Membership Development materials at www.ieee.org/md. Select “Order MD Kit” from the right hand navigation.
Build your own IEEE hosted website http://sites.ieee.org/
Connect with your Regional Representative: (http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/students/activities_committee.html)

Know Branch Administration
• The key to running a successful Student Branch is in the administration.
• The Executive Committee should consist of all of the Branch Officers, sub‐committee Chairs, and the Branch Counselor.
• Elections should be held yearly, or as needed. All active IEEE Student and Graduate Student members should participate in your elections. Record the newly elected Chair and Counselor via: https://officers.vtools.ieee.org/.
• Plan your yearly activities and use the Calendar as a guide: http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/students/st_calendar‐student_branch_development.pdf

Program Preparation
• Will this event attract new members?• Do we have the resources to carry it through (e.g. time, people, funding)?
• How will it satisfy the needs of existing members?• Does it meet a specific need for your section/ Branch?
• Will you need to undertake a fundraising effort to hold this event?
12/21/2017
Section/ Branch Activity Ideas…
• Enter Design Competitions • Design a Student Branch website and enter the Global Student Website and Social Media Competition.
• Organize field trips to Industry • Participate in IEEE conferences • Publish a Student Branch newsletter• Participate in engineering awareness programs• Raise funds for charity
12/21/2017
Attracting New Members
Host a membership drive! The Branch Chair can order materials via:
http://ewh.ieee.org/forms/md/supplies‐ondemand.php
The professional, technical, and social activities that a Student Branch can offer are beyond just the campus and local experience. Be sure to direct prospective members to www.ieee.org/join!
