WINTER/SPRING 2015 February
• Dress 4 Success o In line with giving our members the resources to succeed both socially
and professionally, we held a business fashion event called “Dress 4 Success.” The event featured a presentation by popular Chicago fashion blogger, The Sassy Peach, followed by a fashion show of NU students wearing sponsored clothing from places like Jugrnaut, Notre, Savvy Seconds, and more! The event featured giveaways and was a way for members to learn how to dress for jobs/internships professionally, yet with style.

o • Discussing Medill
o It’s not easy being a student of color in the Medill School of Journalism sometimes. To help create a discussion to make the experiences of Black student improve, NABJ-‐NU facilitated the first ever Discussing Medill at Prof. Ava Thompson-‐Greenwell’s home. We provided transportation for both undergrad and grad students to Prof. Greenwell’s home in Evanston and fostered a discussion between students and faculty about possibilities in the future of Medill.

• Rethinking Mental Health in the Media o A co-‐sponsored event between NABJ-‐NU and Medill’s chapters of
NAHJ and AAJA (AASJ on our campus),this featured a presentation
about mental health and its portrayal in mainstream media, followed by a discussion that covered our role as journalists in destigmatizing mental illness and upholding conversations about mental health issues.

• Welcome Back Mixer, Thursday Oct. 1 2015 o Our annual welcome back mixer is open to returning members and
new students alike to meet others and express what is expected for the school year ahead.
o • Building A Legacy of Excellence panel, Friday Oct. 16, 2015
o This panel was composed of Medill alum Sheinelle Jones and Emerald Morrow and other alumnae in different fields. Co-‐hosted by NABJ-‐NU and Northwestern’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the panel served as both a networking and career planning event for the community.
o • Career Fridays with MCS
Friday Oct. 16 Friday Oct. 9 Friday Oct. 23
o Career Fridays were hosted throughout the quarter, co-‐hosted by NABJ and Medill’s Career Services department. From resume building to tips on sending the perfect pitch, Career Fridays offered professional advice to students on career related outlooks.
o November-‐
• The Black Press documentary screening, Nov. 16 o The documentary directed by Stanley Nelson, “The Black Press:
Soldiers Without Swords,” talks about the history of Black journalism and Black journalists and the effect they have on today’s industry. This event was open to the entire Northwestern University community to learn about the Black press and was followed by a discussion.
o • State of the Black Union, Nov. 18
o For the second year in a row, NABJ-‐ Northwestern was able to co-‐sponsor the Q&A portion of State of the Black Union, hosted by the university’s Black Student Alliance in which a poignant speaker in the Black community is brought to campus. This year was the first that 2 speakers were brought: former EIC of Ebony Magazine Amy Dubois Barnett, and Being Mary Jane producer and Northwestern alum Mara Brock Akil. Sierra Boone, our chapter president, served as moderator for the Q&A portion with the two.

o • Discussing Medill at Ava’s Place, Friday Nov. 20
o Discussing Medill is an annual event that is hosted at Northwestern journalism professor and NU alum Ava Thompson-‐Greenwell’s home in Evanston. NABJ-‐NU provided transportation for members of the Black Medill community to come and discuss what the school of journalism is doing well in and what it could improve on. Black Medill faculty such as Charles Whitaker and Michael Deas were also present.
o December-‐ Quarter’s End celebration, Wednesday Dec. 2
o Before everyone left for Winter Break, NABJ-‐ Northwestern held a celebration to commemorate a successful Fall Quarter and as another bonding experience for our members.

§ • Weds, Jan. 27th -‐ Slant News info session: Some of the editorial for new start-‐
up online publication Slant News came to one of our general meetings for an information session on writing for them and obtaining summer internships
o • NBCUniversal Info session, co-‐hosted by NAHJ, AASJ and NAJA. Folks from
NBCUniversal HR department held an information session on internships and employment opportunities hosted by NABJ and other cultural journalism groups on campus. Sponsored by Medill Career Services.

• Weds, Jan. 20th – BlackBoard Magazine revival interest meeting – BlackBoard magazine was a black-‐interest campus publication dating back to the sixties at Northwestern. After being defunct for a few years, NABJ-‐ Northwestern organized a group of students dedicated to organizing the magazine’s return. Weekly team meetings.

SPRING (Dates have not arrived yet) April
• BlackBoard Magazine launch: April 8th o After a quarter of planning and fundraising with success of raising
over $200, BlackBoard Magazine will be launching its digital platform on April 8th. BlackBoard is NU’s only Black student publication and was founded in the late 60s, but recently went defunct. NABJ-‐NU organized a group of dedicated students set on bringing the platform back. BlackBoard is now a satellite of NABJ-‐NU.
• 2016 MIDWEST SUMMIT: April 22-‐24 o Arguably our largest event of the school year, the Midwest summit
will bring all Midwest area chapters of NABJ to Northwestern University’s campus for a weekend of workshops, seminars, speeches, networking, and MORE! Last June, we made a whole separate committee to plan the summit, to much success! With the theme of “Controlling Our Narrative” (the slogan of our chapter), the summit this year will bring faces such as Todd Johnson, Dorothy Tucker, Margena A Christian, and a keynote from the Editor-‐in-‐Chief of EBONY Magazine, Kierna Mayo. Registration is still open for the event.
