The field is located on the west end of the University of Northwestern Ohio campus behind the Baseball and Soccer fields. Started in 2003, the Allen County Abilities Base- ball League offers children with special needs in Lima and surrounding areas the opportunity to play baseball. The first year, the program worked with 53 children. Each year the league gets big- ger and last year reached more than 110 children ages 4-21 in Allen, Putnam, Van Wert, Hardin, Hancock and Auglaize Counties. The Rotary Field of Dreams at UNOH has a fully synthetic turf sur- face and is handicap accessible to allow for play even following rainy weather! This dedicated field for the Abilities Baseball League will allow the organization the opportunity to include adult leagues in the coming years. The Abilities Baseball League and the Rotary Field of Dreams at UNOH all started with Rachael Staley, an Early Intervention Specialist with the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabili- ties. When Staley was a senior in college, she was tasked with creating a service that was needed in the area. At the time, she was interning at Children’s Developmental Center in Lima which works with children with special needs. She noticed that most of the programming available for kids stopped in the summer months, the per- fect season for baseball. The Abilities Baseball League was formed and the rest is history! When asked about her feelings of the field becoming a reality, Staley said, “As our league began to grow, so did our dream, and we saw the need for our own field. This is a place our children can call their own; a field that will meet their needs and where they can feel safe playing. I am so thankful to everyone and every organization that has donated to the Rotary Field of Dreams at UNOH project. This will truly be a field of dreams for many children in our area!” | ROTARY FIELD OF DREAMS @ UNOH RIBBON CUTTING Nearly 90 employers stop by UNOH The Fall Career Tech Days, scheduled for Oc- tober 11-12, 2017, was a huge sucess. FALL QUARTER 2017

| ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

What first attracted you to UNOH? I had friends that were past students they influ-enced my decision. When I took the initial tour it opened my eyes to the possibilities of the industries that surrounded trade schools. Compared to the other options UNOH had athletic programs that was very appealing to me.

What do you remember most vividly about your time at UNOH? The instructors were extremely dedicated to help-ing. I can’t remember a time when I went home without understanding a concept. This was true at Career Services, Admissions, Financial Aid and the Event Center. The staff at all UNOH facilities are truly genuine and there to help.

What person at UNOH, staff, faculty or students, made the biggest impression on you? Nathan Mailhot, was my first instructor and he went above and beyond for me. He recommended me for the tour guide position while I was in school. He wrote me a letter of recommendation for when I graduated and we still keep in touch. Overall there were a select few at UNOH that molded me into the person I have become today.

What are some lessons you learned at UNOH that have served you well in your life after UNOH? I learned a lot about diversity and culture. I grew up in a small town in NH and I really hadn’t been exposed to anything else. Having students from across the world was an amazing eye opener for what was out there. It inspired me to travel and to talk with new people. Hard work pays off, I knew this before UNOH however the reward was much larger after school. The 2 years that I dedicated to school will produce a lifetime of opportunities and happiness.

What was your career field and first job after graduation? I went to work in the oil industry for a company called Halliburton. I was a service operator on a down hole blender. Our crew did hydraulic fractur-ing and although my job wasn’t exactly what I had gone to school for it helped tremendously. I was now able to fix my machine without having to

wait for the mechanic. I could speak the language when it was something that I couldn’t fix. I continue to use my mechanical skill set every day and that’s what I love most about UNOH. You’re not paying for a degree in a specific field. The skills that they teach you are relative to everyday life.

Who is your current employer and what do you do? I work for Milton Caterpillar in the forestry sales division. I absolutely love this career path it is ex-tremely rewarding and allows me to create my own day to day schedule. Again, you may view this job as not being related to my schooling however I can communicate with my customers in a much deeper level. I like to think that gives the customer a sense of confidence. The verbal communication, actually understanding someone’s personality and being able to adapt to each unique one is something I never would have been able to do prior to school.

How had your UNOH education benefited you professionally? My study habits changed dramatically and I learned time management. I quickly found study habits that fit my personality this in turn allows me to be much more capable at my current job. My speech and ability to speak were night and day. I faced a new crowd everyday it became easier as time passed. The jobs that I had at UNOH were unlike anything I had ever known. I already had the work ethic and with these new skillsets I became an employee that was valuable.

What advice do you have for UNOH students or other alumni? I watched so many of my peers not take advan-tage of the opportunities that UNOH had to offer. I watched many students not raise their hands because they didn’t want to be laughed at. I watched the cool kids fail classes, the kids that everyone looked up to. The only advice I can offer is to be humble. Observe everything around you, take chances, make logical decisions. College is about growing up and deciding on your career path. UNOH offers you every tool to be successful.

| ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

What first attracted you to UNOH?I was attracted to UNOH because the school catered to all of my interests that included racing, truck pulling, diesel mechanics, and overall friendship and meeting new people. The affordability was also nice as I originally didn’t have much hope for furthering my education beyond high school.

What do you remember most vividly about your time at UNOH?My most vivid memories of UNOH were my one-on-one experiences with my instructors, and discussing class topics with real world experiences I’ve already had and could relate my education to. My college experience was very down-to-earth as I averaged working 50 hours a week during the day and attending classes full time at night.

What person at UNOH, staff, faculty or students, made the biggest impression on you?Billy “Sarge” Sergent, who I believe is now retired, was my biggest mentor and most memorable. He was what I considered a “Good Ole Boy”. He had real world experience and could fully answer questions I had, whenever I had them.

What are some lessons you learned at UNOH that have served you well in your life after UNOH?Skills I learned at UNOH have served me expo-nentially throughout my career in several aspects. From shop skills people management, applied math, marketing and everything in between, I have become what I believe to be a well-rounded indi-vidual that is capable of doing any high profile job given to me.

What was your career field and first job after graduation? After graduation, I landed a job at a welding shop in Wooster, Ohio. There, I put my newly acquired skills to work and become a certified welder. After my certification process, I was then turned loose on heavy equipment fabrication and repair, on every-thing from farm and mining equipment, to class 8 semi-trucks.

Who is your current employer and what do you do?I currently work at McElwain Industries of Kalida, Ohio. There I am a welder/fabricator, and specialize in specialty fabrication of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. I have also ventured into the class 8 truck market, where I do custom work on the side. One of the trucks I played a major role in building is now going to be featured in an industry magazine, highlighting my work.

What advice do you have for UNOH students or other alumni?Do what you want to do, and go down the path you’d like to go in life before com-mitting to any type of higher education. I highly recommend getting an entry level job somewhere you think you may want to work before you go to school to learn that trade. By doing so, you will get paid experience to know whether or not that career path is for you. After graduating and earning my degree, it didn’t take me long to decide that I didn’t want to be a diesel mechanic for the rest of my life. My degree was still highly applicable because it did steer me onto the path I am in now, doing custom work on semi-trucks, and with my current career.

Furthermore, whether you decide you want to be a welder, diesel mechanic, pro wrestler, cook, truck driver, software designer, or a burger flipper, the best advice I could give to anybody is simple: Show up early every day, stay late if need be, and always apply yourself 100%. Mark my word, if you do those simple things, in whichever career you get into, you will be successful. You will be a sought-after employee. You will advance in your career quicker than imaginable. The jobs are out there, they just need the right people to fill them.
