On Thursday, 21 Novem-ber, we are having a “Two Stage” event for our final

“regular” Aloha Chapter monthly luncheon meeting of 2013.

We will start our morning at 1000 at the VA Center for Aging, which is adjacent to Tripler Army Medical Center. This visit has become a Chapter tradition as we stroll through the halls at the Center, led by our song leader Rose Baysa. We encourage all of you to join with us as we thank these Veterans for their service and serenade them with stirring choruses of everyone’s favorite patriotic songs. So you say that you can't sing??? Chairman’ s Corner

By Mark Webster Monday, 11 November, is Veterans’ Day, a day that we honor all of those who have served in the U.S. armed forces, especially one who has served

in combat, whether it be only one tour of duty or an entire career, usually 20 years or more. To all those who have earned Veteran recogni-tion by being a part of the greatest military in the world, thank you for YOUR service.

Memorial Day primarily honors our deceased Veterans, especially those that have made the ulti-mate sacrifice in combat, whereas Veterans’ Day is a day of respect and admiration for our cur-rent, former, and retired service men and women.

Our Aloha Chapter will honor our valiant Veterans at 1000 on Thursday, 21 November, by appropriately serenading with patriotic songs those at the VA Center for Aging, as we have done in November for several years. This hospice for about 60 Veterans is located on the grounds of Tripler Army Medical Center. Songbooks will be provided, but an ability to sing is not required, just your participation in this heartwarming gathering.

The inspirational cards prepared by Wes Fong’s Community Affairs Volunteers on 6 November (See Calendar of Events) will be dis-tributed to each patient at the Center for Aging.

Following this Patriotic Songfest, we will as-semble at Hale Ikena, Ft. Shafter, for our Annual General Membership Luncheon Meeting. We will elect a slate of officers to lead Aloha Chap-ter in 2014 & 2015. Our Nominating Commit-tee consisting of just MG Kelly Lau, USA, Ret., has done an outstanding job; he will submit the following members for your consideration: For Director (4 Openings): Wes Fong (All 2-Year Terms) Mel Soong Ira Tagawa & Harold Takenaka

Reminder: Annual Retiree Seminar This year’s annual retiree seminar will be held on Saturday, 2 November, at the Hickam Offi-cers’ Club, JBPHH, and is open to all Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine and Navy retirees, their spouses and annuitants. Reserva-tions are not required.

Exhibitors will be open at 0745 for displaying their literature, handouts, and giveaways. Shots and blood-pressure checks will be available. Light refreshments will be served. Guest speakers will commence at 0830.

2013 ALOHA CHAPTER CHRISTMAS PARTY

An account of our 2012 Chapter Christmas Party could have started like a bad Gothic novel: “It was a dark and stormy night...!!!” Although we greatly enjoyed our evening din-ner party last year, and liked the venue at the Sunset Lanai at Camp Smith, the drive to and from that location in the dark and stormy night left a lot to be desired!

So, this year mark your calendars and break out your Holiday attire for a return to the Sunset Lanai where we will enjoy a deli-cious Mid-Day Christmas Party Luncheon, and the spectacular view, on Wednesday, 11 December,

starting at 1100.

Your Program Committee is promising a marvelous event! We have accumulated well over one hundred door prizes! There will be “bubbly” non-alcoholic toasting; we will have joyful Holiday singing led by our rousing songleader Rose Baysa, and our intrepid President Curtis Lee promises some “good” seasonal humor!.

The Sunset Lanai will be festively adorned for the Season by the Camp Smith staff, and our Merrie Ladies will perform their customary table decorating magic.

We will all have the opportunity to over-indulge in an amazing, bountiful luncheon buf-fet featuring a delicious Herb Roasted Chicken, Salmon with Dill Sauce, a magnificent Prime Rib Carving Station, plus many delicious side dishes and “fixings”! This is definitely NOT going to be a “Light Lunch”!

In lieu of a Gift Ex-change, as in years past, we will again have a charitable focus this year as we support the Marine Corps’ annual “Toys for Tots” campaign; we are asking each of you to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to this

important holiday effort.

Let's all come prepared to enter into this year's Holiday Season with “Gusto”; family and guests are most welcome! The RSVP form is located on the next page, page 4 of this newsletter. Please have your reservations in the mail to arrive not later than 4 December.

Your Program committee challenges you to top last year's attendance mark of forty-nine for this happy occasion.

Although this is a daytime event, please feel free to “Deck” yourselves out at whatever level of Holiday at-tire you might prefer.

Happy Holidays,

Your Program Committee

country as the center piece at Victory Bond rallies.

Also of great interest were pictures taken on the flight deck of the carrier AKAGI of the launch of the attacking aircraft and the celebrations attending their triumphant return.

The presentation was followed by a lively ques-tion and answer session which included com-ments by our own Joe Kuroda who was an eye witness to the attack from his Aiea neighborhood.

Our thanks to Daniel for a very interesting program.

MOAA Christ-mas Dinner

Party To the right, gleaned from the Hawaii Chapter’s No-vember newsletter, is the Reservation Form for the MOAA Christmas Party at the Hickam Officers’ Club on Saturday, 14 December. All MOAA members are invited, including those not yet affiliated with either chapter on Oahu.

A national MOAA print-out of likely candidates to join a chapter was win-nowed down to about 400 prospects who have been sent invitations. This party, hopefully, will be a great recruiting tool.

A fabulous festive evening is planned. This will be an excellent occasion to subtly recruit new members for either chapter. Hopefully, there will be a significant representation of the Aloha Chapter to ensure our fair share of the prospective new members.

If you plan to attend this memorable MOAA Christmas Party at the Hickam Officers’ Club on Saturday, 14 December, please mail in the above Reservation Form not later than 6 December.

Reminder: Community Service Projects for Fisher House & TAMC

At our luncheon at the Hale Ikena on Wednesday, 23 October, mem-ber Wes Fong reminded us of our community service project. It will be held on Wednesday, 6 November; we will meet at 0900 in the rotunda of the Navy PX. We will shop for baby items for the Fisher House, carpool to make our delivery when we are finished shopping. After that, we will gather at the Palms Restaurant (old Sam Snead’s Clubhouse at the Navy/Marine Golf Course) at 1130 am for lunch. After lunch, we will work on stamping 400+ cards of encouragement to be given to the patients at Tripler Hospital and some for the Center for Aging on 21 November. Reservations have been made for 20 places for lunch. We will be on the Lanai as we don't want to disturb the other diners.

October Golf Re-port

Oh, what a day for golf, it was! Even prettier than Jumbo Joe's "Lucky come Hawaii for golf", yes sir, much prettier than that. All the players showed up on time. Of course, the last one

to arrive would be the player who lives the closest to the Barbers Point Golf Course. No, it was not Joe Kuroda; he is battling the makule man's "no can play golf" pains.

What a glittering foursome in the first group of golfers! They were led by Kelly Lau; the remainder of the foursome were also two-star (MG) players. We had long time absentee golfer Steve Tom, always on the road Bob Lee, and a brand new player who has decided to join the Aloha Chapter. He came from the East Coast and said he got tired of shoveling the white stuff that incessantly falls out of the sky. They were followed by another foursome led by incoming El President John Ma accom-panied by Gordon Cho, Ken Munechika and Mel Soong; they were followed by the three-some of Ira and Marilyn Tagawa (The only wahine golfer for the day) and Gerald Bruce; they were followed by Ken Yamada and his guest Dennis Kawano (who served in Viet-nam about the same time as yours truly, how-ever, with different Divisions); bringing up the rear was yours truly with two retired fire de-partment Captains.

When we had finished the 18 holes of golf and were busy taking care of our thirst and hunger, with help from Mel Soong, we were able to set up the blind partner mega jackpot. The first snag was a tie for third place between the partners of Ken Munechika and Mel Soong vs. Gordon Cho and Bob Lee; applying the tie breaker, the winners of third place went to Gordon Cho and Bob Lee; in second place

Norm Fujiwara

were the pair of Tagawas, Ira and Marilyn, a family effort, the top bananas for the mega jackpot were Ken Yamada and yours truly. Congratulations to the winners.

Our thought for the day: "Why in the world is it always the third car back that is the first to see the light turn green?"

Our next golf outing in the month of No-vember is on the fourth Friday, the 22nd. Heard from one of the players that the greens at Leilehua Golf Course are in horrible shape. Thus, we will play instead at the Mamala Golf Course at Hickam AFB. Aloha, Norm

For the second consecutive month, our newest regular player, Jane Amaki, ended the party bridge session on Sunday, 21 Octo-ber, as the top scorer. She amassed 4,240 points, far outscoring the next high scorer, Shirley Ihara, who had 3,350 points, com-pleting an all-female list of honorees with Helen Fahrni and Jean Wilkinson. There was no slam made again during this session.

Other players were: Mitzi Austin, Les Ihara, Dan Matthews, and Harriet Weissman.

The next bridge session will be held on Sunday, 17 No-vember, in the Fahrni Realty Class-room, hosted by Dayle & Robbi Carlson. Those who have not signed up but would like to play on that date must contact Dayle

or Robbi by telephone at 456-2903 or e-mail to [email protected], or Vernon or Marion Von at 732-3908 not later than Wednesday, 13 November. Shirley
