DONATION OF APPLES TO HOSPITALS AND ORPHANAGES IN TETE PROVINCEIFS had 10 tonnes of apples in stock, which is normally a months supply, but a camp have unfortunately banned fruits at their site. It was suggested that the fruit be burnt as they could not be returned back to South Africa. IFS stepped in and suggested donating them to the various hospitals and orphanages in the area, as per our social responsibility of improving the nutrition of Tete patients and children. We approached the Governor first and take his approval to distribute the fruits at the proposed places.

The ceremony took place on the 20th & 21st April 2017. IFS and ICVL donated 320 boxes (over 6 tonnes) of red and green apples through the Governor of Tete Province office.

IFS used their food transport vehicles to deliver the fruits to the various places. The fruit was distributed to 19 different sites. The distribution took 2 days and covered 4 districts of the Tete Province, namely Moatize, Changara, Tete and Chiuta. Tete Province Governor´s wife, her Secretary, District Administrators, Provincial and District Medical Directors worked tirelessly with us for this campaign to be a success. This initiative has been applauded by the Government, as well as the recipients of the donations. The Governor´s wife appreciated our commitment to uplift the nutrition of the people in the Province and alluded that such cooperation between ICVL, IFS and Government should grow from strength to strength.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN MOZAMBIQUEJosina Machel was one the many who played a significant role in the history of Mozambique during the Portuguese regime. Machel was among the volunteers who were designated to serve at the Liberation Front of Mozambique or FRELIMO to fight for the national independence. She worked as an assistant director at the Mozambique Institute in Tanzania. Because of her dedication to serving the country, Machel even refused to accept an outstanding offer to be a scholar at a premier university in Switzerland. Instead, she chose to remain as a volunteer for FRELIMO’s Women’s Branch which aimed to offer military training to women and have them equipped and prepared for a military struggle. She was among the few chosen women who underwent military training at Nachingweya in Cabo Delgado. And during the peak of 1968, she was assigned as the head of the Women’s Section under the International Relations Department of FRELIMO which was only at her early 20’s by then. Shortly after that, she became the head of the Department of Social Affairs of FRELIMO and held several projects and programmes concerning the children and the women.

And on the tragic year of 1970, Josina Machel was diagnosed with liver cancer. She went to Moscow for just a short period of time for treatment and quickly went back to her country to fulfil her obligations in the FRELIMO. She suffered much stress and pain because of her illness and became very weak. On April 7, 1971 while she was at the Muhimbili Hospital, Josina Machel died at the age of 25.

On the anniversary of her death, FRELIMO officially announced that April 7 will be a National Day for Women in Mozambique in special remembrance to Josina Machel. On March 1973, The FRELIMO, which was inspired by Josina Machel and her campaign for Human Rights, established the National Organization of Mozambican Women which aims to protect the social rights of the Mozambican Women. This inspiration left by Machel later on led to the Mozambican independence on 1975. NATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND ACTIVITIES

Every year on April 7, the Mozambicans gather in many different parts of the country to hold several programmes and activities to pay tribute to their national heroine Josina Machel.

The day indication as well for the people to celebrate and rejoice for their country’s achievements and accomplishments. Despite the many catastrophes and disasters that Mozambique went through in the past, the people still continue to stay positive and proud for their Mozambicans nationality.

AFUNGI EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

IFS WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO JUMA JOSE Juma is one of the hardest working employees that his Manager, Julia Miguel, has ever came across in her 20 years’ in the food industry.

He is a very honest and friendly person, embodying the IFS culture as he serves with pride and excellence.  The fact that he is mute and is deaf, does not stop him from communicating with a smile and a clear passion for his role. His positivity and willingness to set an example for all around him is evident daily and he looks for creative ways to communicate with the client, either through sign language or writing, to ensure that their needs are constantly met. Juma’s wife works with him on the Kenmare project and is also mute and deaf. Like her husband, she has a positive attitude and is a breath of fresh air behind the serving counter, making sure guests are greeted with a smile after a long day on the mine. We at IFS are incredibly proud of this dynamic duo and would like to honour them on this platform. Thank you for your loyal service and we are proud to have you as part of the IFS family!

WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF THE IFS FAMILY!

IT´S A REAL PLEASURE TO HAVE

BENDITA IN OUR TEAM!

The worker of the Year for Afungi Camp is Bendita Jorge Andre. She is works as a Housekeeper and is also responsible for cleaning VIP rooms. She’s hard working and cooperates very well with supervisors and peers. She is a very good team player and always encourages others to work hard. She usually exceed expectation by doing her own deep cleaning programme in the rooms she is responsible for and always going that extra mile to make the clients happy. It´s a real pleasure to have Bendita in our team.

It is CRITICAL to get immediate treatment of malaria. Anyone who becomes ill with a fever or flu-like illness whilst being or having travelled to a malaria area should immediately seek professional medical care. Inform your health care provider that you have been in a malaria-endemic area and should be tested for malaria infection. If you would like any further information regarding malaria and malaria prevention, please contact your IFS HSE Manager.

I wish I could show the full story. It was a solid cake of fat and rancid food scraps. The trap is about 1.75m deep and it was completely caked up. Even the pipes were blocked back into the kitchen. The “honey sucker” blocked up twice, they had to remove the pipes and clean it out to continue. Worst I’ve seen.

Zijin Visit to Kamoa Copper SA

About Kamoa Copper Mine

IFS recently signed on Kamoa Copper, DRC Congo for a two year Facilities Management Contract and within a short few months after taking over management of the facilities have received many compliments. The best of these was the week of 12-14 April when we hosted the major shareholding company executives from the Zijin Group who flew in from China, as well as some of their local DRC management team.

Zijin (www.zijinmining.com) is one of the largest mining groups in the world and it is our privilege to be managing the facilities of a site that Zijin is considering to become one of their flagship operations in the world.

Kamoa Copper is a recent discovery and has been found to be the largest copper deposit in the world. This site is anticipated to become the largest mining operation of any kind in the world. The programme included a sit-down Chinese Dinner in the Chinese Dining Room at Kamoa. Frank Zhou, Supply Chain Manager at Kamoa Copper SA (under the Zijin Group) commented that the Chinese meal was the best they ever had and asked who the Chef was (a compliment to our IFS Chefs on site who excelled themselves).

On their last night, a lamb spit braai was hosted by IFS, with additional side dishes including special breads, beef

The Kamoa Copper Project is situated in the Kolwezi District, Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The project includes the development of a 5Mtpa underground mine and a concentrator to produce blister copper and sulphuric acid.

With an indicated resource of approximately 740Mt, Kamoa is regarded as Africa’s largest, high-grade copper discovery and the world’s biggest, undeveloped high-grade copper discovery.

Location, geology and mineralisation of Kamoa Copper MineThe Kamoa copper project is a large stratiform copper deposit, located approximately 25km west of Kolwezi town, and approximately 270km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. The deposit is located within the Central African Copper belt and forms a part of the interpreted extension of the Western Foreland unit of north-western Zambia.

12 TIPS TO PREVENT FIRES IN THE WORKPLACE

Fire safety is an important workplace topic throughout the year. While death and injury are the greatest risks and the ones with which most people are familiar, fires also destroy jobs. Here are some general tips for a fire-safe workplace to share with your employees.

Preventing fires is everyone’s job. We all need to be alert to anything that could cause a fire, and take responsibility to report any problem areas so they can be corrected. Here are some reminders about fire prevention:

1. Practice good workplace housekeeping. Clutter contributes to fires by providing fuel and by preventing access to exits and emergency equipment.

2. Place oily rags in a covered metal container. This waste must be properly disposed of on a regular basis.

3. Maintain machinery to prevent overheating and friction sparks.

4. Report electrical hazards. Many fires start in faulty wiring and malfunctioning electrical equipment. Never attempt electrical repairs unless you are qualified and authorized.

5. Maintain free access to all electrical control panels. Material or equipment stored in front of the panels would slow down the shutting down of power in an emergency situation.

6. Use and store chemicals safely. Read the label and the Material Safety Data Sheet to determine flammability and other fire hazards. Provide adequate ventilation when using and storing these substances.

7. Use all precautions to prevent ignition in potentially explosive atmospheres such as those containing flammable liquid vapours or fine particles. Use non-sparking tools, and control static electricity as required.

8. Help maintain building security to prevent arson fires. Lock up as instructed; report suspicious persons; and don’t leave combustible rubbish where it can be

set afire outside the building.

9. Smoke only in designated areas, and extinguish smoking materials safely. Never smoke in storerooms or chemical storage areas.

10. Never block sprinklers, fire fighting equipment or emergency exits. Observe clearances when stacking materials.

11. Post emergency telephone numbers as well as the company address by the telephone in your station for quick access if a fire were to start in your work area.

12. Learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

What To Do in Case of Fire

It’s also important that you have a clear idea what to do in case a fire does occur.

1. Know the emergency procedures and your role in them.

2. Sound the alarm so the building occupants can escape.

3. Proceed to the designated assembly area outside the building.

4. If you are trained to do so, you might be able to fight a small fire with a portable extinguisher. Choose the right extinguisher for the type of fire, and keep a clear escape route.

5. As you leave, shut down machinery or process equipment according to the emergency plan.

6. Take fire drills seriously. They are organised to save lives and property in case of the real thing.

Conclusion

A workplace fire is an experience you don’t want to have. In addition to injury and loss of life, the outbreak of a fire can lead to job losses. Rebuilding a workplace after a fire is very expensive and many companies can’t afford to do it. Don’t let a fire threaten you, your co-workers and your job. Work safely to prevent fires, and know what to do if one occurs.
