NEWSLETTER 23rd May 2015

From the Principal

Welcome everyone to Week 6.

Big Crunch

The Big Crunch was held a couple of weeks ago – lots of fun.

Many thanks to Mr Watts for taking these photos, and to Mrs Sutton

for organising the event.

Please click on the photo below to see more.

Pijin English Lessons

Rev Mal Dunnett was in this week, teaching some students from Years 10-11 some basic Pijin

English, in preparation for the trip to the Solomon Islands that will take place 21 Sept – 7 Oct.

Several Year 12 students also dropped in for the fun of it.

These lessons will continue as the trip approaches.

It’s always great to see Mal at the school. We’re very grateful to you Mal for your time and

commitment this exciting opportunity for our students.

Trees near Basketball Court

I have some news regarding the poplars along the ‘new classroom’ end of the Basketball

Court, in the Primary playground. Unfortunately the trees are damaging the surface of the

court – you may have noticed a sizeable raised area at that end.

Unfortunately this is becoming a WHS issue. The bill to fix the court has come in at, dare I say

it, $9,000. Unfortunately, now the trees are mature, this expense will continue to occur on a

regular basis.

Consequently we have been forced to have the trees along that end of the court removed.

This will happen in the coming holidays.

I expect to replace them with shrubs that are kinder to the court. We will also plant double

that number of larger trees around the school.

I do believe trees are very important in a school. For one thing, they ‘soften’ the place – and

a harmonious environment is good for all of us. Thanks everyone for your understanding on

this.

Have a great week everyone.

NSS – Wednesday the 27th of May, is National Simultanious Storytime. Year

2 Macleay will help Ms Taylor present the story “The Brothers Quible” by

Aaron Blabey, to the students from Transition to Year 4.

PRC – Please remember to keep writing the titles and authors of PRC books

on the list you have at home. If your child has misplaced their list, there are

copies available in the library. Please contact Ms Taylor. Deadline is end of August.

Author Visit – DC Green, an exciting author of children’s books, will visit our school on

Wednesday the 17th of June. He will present workshops for two groups; K-2 and Yrs 3-6. He is

very entertaining as well as being an excellent source of writing inspiration for children.

School Facebook Pages: Did you know that the school has two Facebook pages? Their aim is

to share important news and events with the school and broader community. Please feel

free to visit and like the pages and share with friends and family.

Network Passwords: Just before the end of Term one, all students were issued with a new

network password. For K-6 students this was along the lines of an animal, a dot then a series

of 4 numbers. I strongly encourage you to help your child memorise this password as it is used

whenever they access the laptops and InTouch, the internal course presentation platform.

Having a class of students who know their password, certainly in Year 3 and above, is

certainly an expectation.

Weeks 7 and 8 Stage 3 Music

As part of out unit on Instruments this term, Stage 3 students are being asked to bring in the

makings for an instrument to their class music lesson on Week 7. Everything needed is to be

brought to class, made and then performed for the class, as part of a group, in week 8.

Anything can be made, and can be as simple or as complex as desired. The point of the

exercise is to examine how instruments are made and perform as part of a group.

Band Concert Week 9

There will be a concert on Thursday 18th June in the Media Centre from 6.15-7.15pm.

Intermediate Band, Beginner Band, Reed Ensemble, Brass Choir, Brass Ensemble and Flute

Ensemble will perform, along with some soloists from these groups.

Class Concerts Week 9

During class room music in Week 9 ( last week of term ), any student interested in performing

for the class will have the opportunity to do so. Please bring you instrument, dancing shoes or

magic hat and present an item for your class.

Please contact me if there are any questions, or if I can be of any assistance with the music

program.

Country Secondary Chess Competition

Recently the secondary chess team of Harry Franks, Luke

Robinson, Jack Dixon and myself, hosted Orange High in

the second round of the country secondary

Chess competition. The standard of games was high and

the end of over an hour's play, the scores were drawn at

2-2. We were able to score the win due to the count back rule, with our wins on boards 1and

3 outweighing Orange High on 2 and 4. It was a hard fought victory and will allow us to

progress to the next round. Special credit goes to Leith Craig and Thomas Cole who

responded enthusiastically when called into the extended team.

As usual, thank you to Mr Cummins and Mrs Laughton. Their hard work is

invaluable to both lunchtime and competition chess at Orange Grammar. –

Peter Dixon, Team Captain

Please have our secondary students in your thougts this week as they complete their Half

Yearly Examinations. I am confident they have been preparing well and will be able to

perform at their very best.

Some of our senior Mathematics Staff will be attending professional development activities

this week. Mrs Elliott will be attending one day of the “Making Mathematics Meaningful and

Memorable” workshop, covering Real Functions, Trigonometry, Plane Geometry, Probability,

Series. I will also be attending day 2 of the workshop which covers Calculus, Curve Sketching,

Logarithmic and Exponential Functions. We are both looking forward to this opportunity to

continue learning about Mathemtics and continually improve our teaching of our students.

Have a great week!

Clothing Pool – We still have a supply of second hand uniforms for sale. If you need a spare

uniform or would like to purchase a second hand uniform please come to Administration on

Tuesday and Thursday after 9.30am.

Second-hand Uniform Trading

The school is conscious of the need to provide an efficient process for families to be able to

recycle their uniforms and other student resources.

The school’s new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade second-hand items via

the “Sustainable School Shop”. The process is as follows:

Families are assisted to list ‘For Sale’ and ‘Wanted’ advertisements online;

The system then matches buyers with sellers;

Buyers contact the seller directly to arrange a convenient time and place to

trade.

The service provides access to second-hand uniforms, calculators, stationery, musical

equipment, etc., all year round. Parents can trade with other parents from different schools

and sell items no longer in use at OAGS or other previously attended schools. For the best results:

List items for sale.

List Wanted Ads for those items you are looking to buy.

The School’s uniform lists are loaded into the system to make listing ads easy.

The system matches the ads of buyers with sellers and notifies the buyer (Wanted Ad) via

email.

Buyers contact sellers and arrange where and when to trade.

Parents are well supported via Sustainable School Shop’s telephone (1300 683 337)

and email help lines.

The system is simple and easy to use - if parents don’t have a computer, internet

access or an email address; they are able to call the Sustainable School Shop for

assistance.

Once an annual subscription expires it will cost $1.00 to list an advertisement on the service.

All enquiries should be directed to the Sustainable School Shop on 1300 683 337, or help is

also available through ‘Contact Us’ on the website at www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au

We are excited to offer this new initiative. We hope you will make the most of this opportunity

and benefit from recycling your child’s school items.
