Choosing a Web Host• In order to make your page available online, you must upload your files to a

web host. • There are a wide variety of web hosts available, and the process of setting up

an account varies depending on the host you’ve chosen. • If you have more technical knowledge, you can gain more control of your

hosting and a cheaper price by using a cloud service such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine or Digital Ocean.

Using Amazon S3• Using Amazon Web Services (AWS), you can host a static website such as the

ones we’ve created in this course for very little.• First, go to https://aws.amazon.com and create an account. You can also

login with your existing Amazon account.• From the Services drop-down, choose S3.

• Choose a name for your bucket, and choose a region. • You should choose the region closest to where most of your website

users will be visiting from.

Set Up the Bucket• Click on your new bucket, expand Static Website Hosting and click “Enable

Website Hosting”.

• Set a name for the index document, in most cases index.html. • You can also set an error document, which is a page shown when a

page requested by the user is not found (404 error).• Since we don’t have an error page yet, you can set it to index.html.

Use a Domain• You may want to register a domain for your website, and then point it to the

bucket. • First, purchase a domain. There are many domain registrars you may choose

from, including Amazon Web Services.• Back in AWS console, go to Services > Route 53.

Create Name Server Records• A name server (or DNS server) tells a computer where to go when a domain

is typed in a browser. We need to tell computers to go to our S3 bucket when our domain is typed.

• In Amazon, we do this by creating a ‘Hosted Zone’.• If you registered your domain using AWS, a hosted zone will be created for

you in Route 53 (click on ‘Hosted zones’).• Otherwise, click ‘Create Hosted Zone’ and enter your domain name.

Associate Your Domain• If you registered your domain via Amazon, you’re done! Check it out!• If not, make not of the NS (name server) records for your domain.

• Go to your domain registrar’s page, and change the name servers for your domain to the four records, such as the ones shown above.

Tip #1: Find the best keywords

• It would be a waste of your time to optimize your website for keywords that are not even being searched for.

• Even if you do get top placement for a broad keyword that isn’t what most users are looking for, Google will calculate the number of times users did not select your listing, and the number of times they returned to the search results to choose a different website. Trying to beat this calculation is futile and more often then not, just a huge waste of time and energy.

• Instead, try using specific keywords, such as:• Buy used Amazon Kindle Online.• Nike shoes Kobe mens size 10.• Find a room mate in Malta.

Tip #2: Discover what competitors do• Click the link to their Site Map page and see what keyword you find in the

links.• Find and parse their XML Site Map to find keywords in page names.• View the HTML title and meta tags of your top competitors to compile a list

of needed content

Tip #3: Write Linkable & Sharable Content

• Content is king. Write content that is• Useful.• Original.• Has supportive facts and references.• Has detail.• Has something fun or interesting included (like video).• Has visual examples.• Has collaborators who link to the content.• You have an offer, discount or promotion included.• How To’s and tutorials are great to get people to share.• Answer questions.• Get involved in social media.

Tip #4: Optimise Your Title and Meta Tags• Use meta tags to describe your website. • Here are some templates:

<title>Call to Action, Keywords, & Value Proposition (under 66 characters)</title>

<meta name="description" content="Differently worded call to action, keywords, & value proposition (under 160 characters)" />

<meta name="keywords" content="one to five keywords separated by commas" />

Tip #6: Images• Always give your images an ALT and TITLE attribute.• You may want to give your images a file name that includes keywords used in

your page.• For example, if keywords for your page are ‘css, design, blog’, then you can

name images ‘css_design_blog_01.jpg’, ‘css_design_blog_02.jpg’ and so on.

content:
