Catholics believe that divine grace is offered to the soul, because without God’s help, humans can’t do good on their own. Grace, which is God’s intervention, bolsters a person’s soul, providing the necessary oomph to do the right thing. Catholics believe that virtues prepare and dispose people so that when the grace is offered, people readily recognize, accept, and cooperate with it. In other words, God’s grace is necessary, but virtues make it easier to work with. The following four virtues (called cardinal virtues or moral virtues) are the hinges on which the rest of the moral life swings: Prudence is basically practical common sense. It’s saying or doing the proper thing, at the proper time, and in the appropriate manner. It’s also the ability to know and judge whether to say something or do nothing at all. Justice is the virtue that seeks to promote fair play. It’s the desire and resolve to give each person his due. It demands that you reward goodness and punish evil. Justice can be one of three different types: Commutative justice is based on the principle of quid pro quo, which is Latin for this for that. Commutative justice requires, for example, that a customer pay a fair price for worthwhile goods. Distributive justice involves the relationship between one and many — between an individual and a group — a per- son and the government, for example. Social justice concerns the relationships between individu- als and groups between one another and everyone. The common good and equal treatment are the cornerstones of social justice. Temperance is the virtue by which a person uses balance. It’s the good habit that allows a person to relax and have fun without crossing the line and committing sin. Fortitude is the ability to persevere in times of trial and tribulation — the ability to hang in there when the going gets tough. It’s courage to do the right thing no matter what the cost. You have to work to develop and maintain these moral vir- tues. When you’re baptized, you’re granted a different set of values — the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love (charity) — that come to you by virtue of the sacrament itself. Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Until Justice Is Done
I don’t know. I have reservations about equating the judge in today’s gospel with God. After all, the Bible is full of lines saying that God hears the cry of the poor, that God is eager and willing to give good things to those who ask. So it’s hard, when you really look at it, to equate the insensitive judge with God. Besides, is the message that if you badger God long enough you can eventually wear God down and get what you want?
I suggest there is a more fruitful and less obvious—
and unexpected—way to understand this gospel. Why not see the widow, not the judge, as the image of God? Once you reverse characters, then a whole new perspective emerges. That is to say, when the widow is seen as a God-like figure, then the message of the parable becomes crystal clear: Anyone who deter-minedly resists injustice—faces it, names it, and de-nounces it until right is achieved—is acting as God does, is God-like. Powerless as Jesus on the cross who defeats the power of death, the widow achieves victo-ry for right. Through her persistence the widow be-comes a kind of Gandhi or Martin Luther King figure. Against all odds she will endure until justice is done and God will be present. This parable is not about strategies to wear down a reluctant God with non-stop prayer. It is about us little people who act like God whenever we persistently seek, often against terrible odds, to have justice done: whenever we hold self-serving politicians’ feet to the fire, when we work to have children insured and free of violence, when we uncover the greed and corrup-tion that siphon off money from the poor, when we work to improve education and to break down barriers that separate people. Father Joby wishes to thank the Ladies Guild for helping us host the first Armatus Training here at St. Francis.
