A senior citizen of Mylapore was conned by a bunch of men last weekend and lost his gold ring and Rs.44,000 in cash.

The man is said to have had a habit of carrying a large amount of cash with him wherever he went from his home on Appu Mudali Street. On the street, he was accosted by a few men who struck a conversation and after gaining the senior’s confidence, they asked him to give them the ring saying they liked the design and wanted to get one for their father.

They even gave him a lift on their bike, managed to get his bag which had the money and after seizing the ring and the money, made off.

The senior then filed a complaint at the Mylapore police station on Kutchery Road. Police are investigating this case. They say they have not been able to get any visual footage because CCTVs were not fixed in the zone where the robbery took place.

WHY IS WOODLANDS FOOD JOINT AT SABHA CAMPUS CLOSED?

Whatever happened to that Woodlands food joint on the campus of Narada Gana Sabha in Alwarpet?

Foodies who find this is a favourite joint for Udupi food have found the food counter closed for a fortnight now.

A staffer now says repair and redesign work is going on and this Woodlands space will open in early December. This is strange since the place was redone over a long time only recently.

Rasikas who attend concerts and drama at this audi-torium hope Woodlands opens on time for the December Season for music and dance. Though a special canteen run by a popular caterer will open at the rear end of this campus, Woodlands is a draw for its regulars for its idli-sambar and khichidi and coffee treats.

Every year, during Karthi-gai Deepam, the tank of Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore wears a magical look at night. Hundreds of oil lamps on the steps, arranged in a pattern, their flickering light bouncing off the water.

The task of lighting up the tank is taken up by the members of Thiruvasaga Thirusabhai. This group, mainly consisting of volunteers, has been active for more than two decades.

Srikanth, a senior volunteer says, “We have been doing it since 2002. About 20 of us got together this year, we used more than 5000 lamps.”

Explaining the process, he says, “We first set up the lamps on the steps of the tank a little before 5 p.m. Once that is done, we add the wicks and the oil and then start the process of lighting the lamps. The whole process takes about two hours.”

The lamps, he says, were sourced from Virudhachalam.

G. Ramesh, another volunteer, says, “Our

group consists of mostly middle aged men and women. Most of them have full time jobs in the morning and join us after work in the evening. We have a few college-going young-sters in our group too. During important festivals, we assemble at the temple to help out”. He continues, “Every year, the place-ment of the lamps is decided by the wind condition at that time and on the number of volunteers”.

This year, after the three-day event which began on November 22, many volunteers pitched in on Sunday to remove the lamps from the tank steps.

LIGHTING UP SRI KAPALI TEMPLE TANK: AN EFFORT BY VOLUNTEERS

This is a story that fueled social media the past fortnight but remained in the grey zone all through. It relates to alleged harassment by a bunch of transgenders at Thirumylai MRTS rail station.

Messages zipped across social media saying that a man who had travelled from Velachery to Mylapore by train was surrounded at the platform by four transgenders who sought money. The man is said to have paid some but the transgenders continued to target him, physically pulled and pushed him and finally took off his trousers even as commuters went about their business.

The story goes that the targeted man was in tears and ran to a room in the station to secure himself. He then called his friends in Mylapore and they rushed to help.

When Mylapore Times spoke to a man who had passed on this news on social media and shared his phone number, he claimed to have heard the story from the couple who are said to have rushed to the ‘victim’s’ aid.

But when attempts were made to get the contact of this couple, they drew a blank.

Later, it was said that the news was shared with the Mylapore MLA’s office. The MLA is said to have suggested that there seems to be nothing solid about this allegation.

It is not known if a plaint was registered with Railway Police.

A woman who says she is a friend of the ‘victim’ claims she alerted the MLA’s office and that this case is now closed – she did not want to talk to Mylapore Times about it now.

So it is still not clear if this harassment incident did take place in the MRTS station.

However, in the past Mylaporeans have reported of transgenders being pushy and aggressive while asking for money. One woman reported recently that her friend was targeted when she stepped out of a food place on TTK Road. Another Mylaporean said he was forced to part with one thousand rupees on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai.

ROAD DRAMA INVOLVING POLICEMEN IN ALWARPET

A Traffic Police officer on duty on C P Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet has been hauled up by his seniors after he yanked his colleague who was riding on his motorbike and causing what could have been a grievous accident.

This incident which happened last weekend at the C. V. Raman Road junction was caught on camera and posted online and the video went viral.

The official at Abiramapuram police station was on duty and sighted his colleague on the bike and realised that he was the one who had been pulled up for ranting on his walkie-talkie a few days ago, on a personal issue and spiked this officer at Abiramapuram – an act that goes against the rules.

So the miffed officer lunged at the man on the bike, who spun off, with the bike almost going under the wheels of a van and the policeman falling to the ground.

We took off from the Royapettah Clock Tower, after a brief haggle.

It was 9.17 p.m.As we approached the first gate of Government

Royapettah Hospital, Arun turned back to me and said, “Just give me a few minutes. . .Let me pack some kushboo iddlis.”

And he had stopped the auto.“Kushboo idlis? I haven’t seen these . .let me come too”But Arun had doubled up and even placed his order.Outside the locked, second gate of the hospital was a

three-wheel push ‘vandi’. A small LED lamp lit up the vessels in the cart. A large plastic bucket held the kushboo idlis - there were only a dozen below - fluffy, round and jet white.

A large vessel held mutton soup. A rotund man was enjoying a bowl of it. Three others, young men dug into the idlis soaking in what seemed to be a meat dish. “That is boti curry,” my driver pointed.

The food hawker had pushed the lid of another vessel which held the boti, steaming. I felt hungry but refused to give in and watched.

Arun had two packs of kushboo idlis - each six rupees - two packs of boti curry, given free like the sambhar they pack, and two packs of boti meat-curry - 35 bucks each.

“One pack for my friend who couldn’t drive his auto today,” Arun told me. The two, from Arni reside in a Mylapore nook.

As he roared into the night, Arun told me of some of his favourite food places. Best Biryani on Kutchery Road, a bhai’s restaurant on Bazaar Road ( “it is a bit costly - egg rice is 80 bucks - and airconditioned”), a breafkast joint near Indira Nagar water tank.

“Are you vegetarian or....,” Arun asked.“Both”“Do you like fish?”“Sure”“Then you must check out the Christian joint off the

Marina kuppam”I told him I knew of it - just off the Loop Road at the

south end where a large picture of Jesus hung on a wall and customers dine here till as late as 3 p.m.

“I have two French tourist customers who come to Chennai every year,” Arun told me. “And they insist they eat at this joint at least twice during the visit.”

Our auto drivers can be great, warm tourist guides; they can open up small worlds even to people of this city. And they can show you the real Indian life, if you care to be curious and want to know.

I have a few auto friends who can show you around the Mylapore neighbourhood. I once guided one of them to nooks of the real Mylapore village - the areas north of Kutchery Road, areas of temples, tanks, lanes and shops.

If someone could train a few auto men to show our heritage neighborhoods . . .

Plot of ‘Old’ Abiramapuram Police Station must be fenced offThe old Abiramapuram Police Station building in Alwarpet was demolished more than

6 months ago for the construction of a new one. A huge, old tree also was cut down depriving shelter for birds and shade in the area.

But understandably, there seems to be no plan for a new building soon. The area is left open for vehicle parking and garbage piles up. Hope the authorities provide fencing till the space is used for building a new station.

RWH: Vasanta Vihar example hearteningIt is indeed heartening that the team at KFI - Vasanta

Vihar has creatively taken up rainwater harvesting at the campus for improving the ground water system and for the benefit of residents in the neighbourhood of R. A. Puram.

As a regular visitor to Vasanta Vihar for study and for walking, I find that the KFI campus has become even more beautiful with the pond. It is now a green lung space.

It is hoped that the civic authorities and schools in Mylapore will adopt the RWH system.

Bad experience with SwiggyI reside in Mylapore and I want to share a bitter

experience with Swiggy, the food delivery service. On November 25, ( my birthday), a Sunday I ordered

for a vegetable biriyani through Swiggy from a hotel called Lunch Box in Mandaveli. I am a vegetarian.

But I was delivered a non-vegetarian biriyani. I declined it and had my food at home.

Then I made a complaint to Swiggy’s help desk: they asked me to send a photograph of the food, which I sent and I asked to return back my bill amount Rs. 225. But they said they will give me vegetable biriyani instead which I refused and I insisted they return my money.

They said they will revert back in 24 hors but till date nothing has happened.

In bill, it is mentioned vegetable biriyani. How can I proceed this so that this should not happen to anyone and publish this issue in your paper for others to know and beware. This should not happen in future to others.

I may have to take this case to a consumer court. - Writer of letter prefers anonymity

Dangers posed by traffic system off TTK Road

Recently, I had a miraculous escape from death by the mercy shown by the driver of a MTC bus at the turning into TTK Road in front of Crown Plaza exit gate.

Our Traffic Police department deserves lots of awards for their amazing and awesome reforms in several junctions of the city.

But the traffic arrangement in this area must be given a big award - such is the mess changes have created.

Buses turning from Chamiers Road to the right side and entering TTK Road do so at a critical area.

Traffic coming from Nandan-am, Crown Plaza hotel and from Boat Club side all cross through this critical point.

I can volunteer to show the Traffic Police Commissioner the mess at this junction after changes were made.

The residents of Archbishop Mathi-as Avenue and Crescent Avenue are upping their efforts to address the issue of segregating garbage and its disposal.

On a recent weekend, some resi-dents, their maids and helpers and representatives of Ramky, the private waste disposal agency and Chennai Corporation met at a common space to talk about these issues. Also present were members of Namma Ooru Founda-tion, a Trust which is working in the field of waste management.

Namma Oru members, whose mission is to provide a sustainable solution for waste management at the community level demonstrated, to those present at the meet, ways in which they could manage waste generated locally.

This R. A. Puram community has made an effort to address waste management issues before but the response from residents has been half-hearted.

Some 150 families reside in this upmar-ket residential area. Ramky had installed six to seven garbage bins and almost every day, these bins overflow with waste and often, waste lies all around these bins.

The waste is thrown into or around the bins by maids who work at these houses and apartments. But the activists among the residents decided to restart their campaign to sensitize residents.

Explains Bhamini Narayanan, “We decided to withdraw the common bins and distribute a set of three bins to take in veg-etable, recyclable and medical waste so that the waste would be segregated at the gate. We also distributed pamphlets to sensitize our neighbours.”

This campaign had some effect. Door-to-door garbage collection began. But as Bhamini puts it, only 50% wholeheartedly

supported the drive.Ramky does not seem to have risen to the

effort. Its workers dumped the segregated waste they collected at the residents’ gates into one cart and then dumped it in the open plot of land at the far end of this colony which has, over the years become a local waste yard from where a lorry carts away the garbage.

Also, the ‘greens’ among the residents who had funded the creation of compost pits in the garbage plot at the end of the road found that this had become a dud project.

“Our idea is not to send our waste save medical stuff to the landfill,” says Ragini Balakrishnan, a resident who with others is the force behind the local civic project. “That compost project did not take off but we want to revive it now.”

A lot of money was spent on construct-ing the compost pits. But it appears that the community left it to the civic workers to do the work and that just did not happen.

The attitude of the civic workers certainly did not enthuse those residents who had not made the effort to segregate waste at home. But the recent community meet and the ideas Namma Oru volunteers shared seem to have helped move forward the project.

Ragini sounds optimistic. “Many activists say that local waste recycling does not work unless the chain works well. But some of us who recycle waste in our backyard believe this is possible locally.”

Ragini and her neighbours are hoping that officials of Ramky and Chennai Corpo-ration will support them in their efforts to segregate waste and to help compost what is possible locally.
