Kalavathy, a resident of Narasimhapuram, Mylapore says that these past few months at home has helped her experiment with different kinds of organic keerai and fruits in her garden. For more than a decade, Kalavathy, who lives in an independent house, has been growing organic vegetables and fruits on her terrace and in the space around her home. She says she has been harvesting veggies like brinjal, chillies, lady’s finger and toma- toes from her garden regularly and has also been sharing them with their neighbours. When the lockdown was announced, she realized that she could use the time at home to try something different. She tried planting the seeds of one or two varieties of keerai first and when she got a good harvest, she slowly tried other forms of the greens. She says she now has 12 different varie- ties of keerai growing including thooduvalai, ponnangani, pudina, kodi pasalai (vine spin- ach), vallarai and ceylon pasalai. And that’s not all. She also planted bitter gourd about three months ago and harvested about 3 kgs. The cantaloupe plant that she worked hard to nourish recently yielded one fruit. Kalavathy has also had the time to try out different kinds of home-made organic fertilizers. She says, “A good fertilizer can be made with vegetable and fruit peels. Just boil them and keep them over- night. In the morning, mix water that is used to wash rice and tea powder along with it and filter it. Add some more water to dilute it and then spray it on the plants. I have tried it out on fruits and veggies and have seen good results”. Kalavathy says good compost can be made from tea leaves. “Get the used tea powder from your local tea shop, put it in a bottle with a few earthworms and make holes in the lid for air circulation and you will get rich compost in 45 days”. Compost, she says, can also be made with dry leaves, coconut fibre, sour buttermilk and jaggery mixed up in a used tray or mud pot. This is one Mylaporean who has gone far in gardening. You can reach her at 9444258021. Kalavathy innovates. She puts kitchen waste, except onion, ginger and garlic, inside a small biogas plant at her home. The biogas plant is connected to a small burner and she can cook for about an hour and a half everyday out of the gas generated by this plant. The waste water that comes out of the biogas plant is diluted and used as a fertilizer for the plants in her garden. The biogas plant was set up in 2018 by M. V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A For close to 30 years, I have either taken people, seniors, young

and kiddos for Heritage Walks of Fort. St. George or been there on my professional assignments.

This week, Facebook gently reminded me of our Walk two ‘Madras Day’ seasons ago, with a string of photos I had posted then.

There are a few places of historical interest in our city which are irresistible to explore on a quiet weekend, especially on Sunday mornings. The Fort tops my list.

Every Madras Day season (www.themadrasday.in) , I have held Walks on a Sunday ( once I had a Walk on a Saturday evening only for kiddos, learning along the way how one has to communicate heritage to teens and sub-teens!).

Often, it either rains or drizzles or the skies are overcast on Walk morning with the remnants of the state’s Independence Day celebra-tion here greeting us at our start point.

Most often, I have close to 100 guests on the Walk and this rattles the Fort police no end; in the early years a couple of them would snoop on us as we moved from one point to the other. One learns to negotiate and in recent years, the cops have been happy to welcome us because we make life easy for the security passage and the Public Dept. officers have always given us a formal order for the Walks in August.

On Sundays, the Fort is yours to own. And if you manage to roll back in time to the 17th and 18th centuries’ atmosphere, the experience is fulfilling. The Fort is not a grand one but its layout and expanse allows a visitor to not only explore places of interest but also enjoy the free spaces.

My favourite space here is St George’s Gate zone and the Fort Glacis. Guests enjoy the time to climb up to the ramparts here and survey this side of the Fort and its fortifications.

The spot where I enjoy a tease is Admirality House, sometime home to Clive and now managed by the local ASI ( Archaeological Survey of India). We sneak into this fantastic building built by an Armenian, and allow guests to be wowed till ASI staff begin bawling!

But my own zone in the Fort on a Sunday is the gardens of St Mary’s Church. The music played at Sunday service from the vintage pipe organ floating in the quiet is a sensual treat. The pandemic will not allow us to hold the Madras Day Walk at the Fort this season. I will however step into the campus one of these days.

There are some places that become a part of your life in a city. May I ask you to expose your children to spaces that define our city, our heritage. Do it on a Sunday morning and treat it like a picnic - George Town, Vepery, Royapuram, Triplicane, St Thomas Mount . . .

School fees. Smart phones for online classes. Salary clips. One photographer wrestles with demands of pandemic time life.

Mylapore-based photographer Dhanasekar (name changed on request) was at his wits end when the school where two of his children stud-ied messaged details of their school fees. And mentioned a deadline that was close at hand.

His company, a prominent cor-porate firm where he worked in the documentation and PR department had given him a break in work and as it did to many others, clipped allowances. His wife is home-based and Dhanasekar did not have the money to pay two school fees in one go.

So he tapped his friends and somehow got loans to pay the fees on time.

But there were other arrangements to be made for a life that the current pandemic is dictating – to support online classes that Dhanasekar’s two children had to attend from early July.

Now, the online classes overlapped a bit so the photographer had to arrange for two smart-phones for the children. So while he parted with his own and that of his wife was shared with another kid, Dhanasekar still needed a phone for himself – his company had messaged a new

schedule of work outdoors.Luckily, rummaging through the cup-

boards at home yielded an old phone that had served 2G services. Good enough to make and receive phone calls.

“I don’t have the money even to buy a second-hand smart phone now,” Dha-nasekar said.

Many people have been trying to locate cheap phones with large screens

that are required by their wards while attending online classes that schools now

conduct regularly.“Even the simple, old phones cost three or

four thousand rupees and you cannot say how long they will function well,” says the photog-rapher.

For now, Dhanasekar’s children have set-tled down to online classes. But the younger one, now in Class 2 is distracted often. He says small children like her are not getting used to this method of teaching. “Guess we got to man-age somehow,” he adds in resignation.

Dhanasekar’s story is fairly common in the neighbourhood. Of small families, economically badly affected since the pandemic set in in late March and trying to cope with the demands of education in these times.

Police instruct people not to publicly install idols or hold processions for Vinayaka Chaturthi

The state govern-ment has announced that installation or procession of Vinayaka idols at public places will not be allowed during Vinayaka Chatur-thi festival.

To ensure this rule is followed by the public, Foreshore Estate police started taking some steps in the community.

Said a police inspec-tor, “We held a meeting with representatives of communities who regu-larly conduct immersion at Patinapakkam beach. We

made it clear that procession and immersion of Vinayaka idols will not be allowed this year due to lockdown restrictions.”

Arrangements are being made to close a part of beach area where the immersion generally takes place every year. “We will deploy police-men here for security,” the officer said.

The officer said that there have been appeals from youngsters to allow immer-sion here but they have been told to follow government regulations.

“We are encouraging people to celebrate at home using eco-friendly Vinayakas,” he said.

Every year, MYLAPORE TIMES CHARITABLE TRUST (MTCT) arranges to partly fund economically poor, academically good students of the Mylapore area when it is time to pay fees at admission time.

The Trust’s 2020 project is on. Due to the prevailing pandemic conditions, the applicants seek more support. The Trust expects the need to raise at least Rs.3 lakhs this season. And Mylaporeans’ help will be handy.

This past week, M. Singaraja donated Rs.584.The Trust is donating close to Rs.70,000 in a few days to at least

8 students of P. S. H. S. School and of Sivaswami Kalalaya Hr Sec, School - all of them are in dire straits. Earlier, Rs.25,000 plus was paid to students of Rani Meyyammai School.

Homeo doctor distributesimmunity boost tablets to Post Office staff

Staff at Mylapore Head Post Office in Kutchery Road were in for a pleasant surprise when a Mylapore based doctor distributed immunity-boosting homoeopathic tablets to them at free of cost.

Recently, Dr. Rekha Srinivasan, a homeo-pathic consultant gave 100 packs of Arsenic Al-bum 30, a homoeopathic tablet recommended by AYUSH Ministry to postal staff here.

Says Dr. Rekha, who has been running Raj Homeo Clinic at Kutchery Road for the past 20 years, “After the AYUSH Ministry recommend-ed this tablet to boost immunity, the Indian Homeopathic Medical Asociation (IHMA) has been distributing them all over the country.”

“Being a part of the association, I too wanted to reach out to front line workers in my backyard. So I spent money from my own pocket and gave them the tablets.”

The doctor says she has so far distributed these tablets to some 25,000 frontline workers including Corporation officials, sanitary work-ers and policemen from across the city. “I carried out the distribution with the help of my friends.”

“As staff at post office too interact with doz-ens of people daily, there is a high possibility of them getting infected by the virus. Hence, I gave these tablets to them.”

Said a senior staff at the Head Post Of-fice, “We were overwhelmed by this gesture. Though we are taking all precautions, gestures like these encourage us to work without the fear of virus.”

No mad rush as liquor shops open on August 18If there was one act that held up the happi-

ness on the re-opening of liquor shops in the city and in Mylapore, it was this – a man in his 40s opening a box of sweets and offering it to men who were standing in a queue outside one of the two TASMAC liquor shops located off the Thiru-mylai MRTS station campus, across the Canal.

August 18, Tuesday was the day of re-opening of all liquor shops in the city as per state orders.

It was not yet 10 am and a small queue had formed inside the barricaded portions leading to the shops. The policemen on duty had little to do because there was no mad rush or tussle even as the shops opened

for business. At a counter, tokens were issued to shoppers –

only 500 tokens to be distributed per day though a token can get you any amount of liquor.

Staff offered sanitisers to the men in the queue and all of them had masks on. Almost all bought only the small bottles of liquor, many say-ing they were thin on money.

There were no signs of a rush even as the morning progressed.

At TASMAC’s Elite liquor store on R A Puram’s 2nd Main Road, the store located in the basement of a complex was also not a buzzing place: a few policemen were on duty.

    By Dheepthi O. J.

Within weeks of its launch, this chaat busi-ness has become a hit. Yes, even in these pandemic times. And you have to ask this mother-daughter duo - Apoorva Gayathri and Radha Rameshkumar, who have been residents of MRC Nagar in R. A. Puram for 7 years now.

Being food lovers, chaat is something their family couldn’t do without.

Says Apoorva, a resident of Rani Meyyammai Towers, “Having lived in Hy-derabad for 20 years, we used to have popular chaat available there daily. A few years ago, when we shifted to Chennai, we realised very few outlets served authentic North Indian chaat here. That’s when we felt the need to start a homemade chaat business.”

However, their venture took shape only a fortnight ago in early July. Young Apoorva had just completed her MBA (Finance) course and was waiting for offer letters from companies she had applied to. However, due to lockdown, the replies were getting delayed.

“Meanwhile, I didn’t want to sit idle. And so we decided to finally kick off our longtime dream of opening a restaurant, with a homemade chaat business,” she says and adds, “I instantly named it R R Chaat after my mother Radha and father Rameshkumar. However, my father pitched in with the official name ‘R R Let’s Chaat’ so people could be encouraged to have a ‘chat over a chaat’ at our restaurant.”

But that food joint will have to wait - per-haps when life gets easy. Soon, a WhatsApp group was formed to spread the buzz about the food offer. And Rameshkumar, a chartered ac-countant took charge of handling accounts.

The family also made small posters of their

business and forwarded them to friends and neighbours. Within two days, they received an order for 99 plates, all from families in the apartment complex where they reside.

“Everyone, loved the chaat as it was homemade and had a unique taste,” says Apoorva.

Slowly, the word spread. And orders started pouring in from

Mylapore, Adyar and Go-palapuram. “We now receive an

average of 120 orders daily”, she says. Items on their menu include North Indian spe-cial chaats - pav bhaji, dahi papdi, masala vada, vada pav and pani puri.

Among this, the best sell-ers, Apoorva says are panipuri,

cutlet ragda, vada pav and pav bhaji.

Barring the mixtures, she says all items are made at home using her mother’s special recipe. “Even the ginger garlic paste and all three chutneys (sweet, spicy and tangy) for chaat are made fresh at home in a hygienic manner.”

Recently, they have also added to the menu a healthier version of chaat - misal pav. It’s similar to pav bhaji, except that here the bhaji (gravy) is made of lobiya (peas) and sprouts. And a special ‘Bombay mixture’ is mixed with gravy and had with pav, she explains.

So how do they manage to make over 100 plates of chaat every day?

“After quickly wrapping up household work, mom and I start preparing chaat from around 11 a.m. Unlike, other food items, preparing chaat is not time-consuming, so it gets over by 3.30 pm. We then pack it in aluminium containers and go out for delivery,” says Apoorva. Customers have to order a day in advance. For now, the delivery is carried out by Apoorva and their car driver, after taking necessary precautions. A plate of pani puri (8 pieces) is priced at Rs 30. Open for deliveries on all days except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For details call 9600066474
