In November 2014, GCH expanded its collaboration with MyKasih through the ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme and contributed RM 800,000 which benefitted close to 1,000 families in 20 schools.

“Our support for the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme now extends to communities in various locations in East Malaysia,” said Knight. The 200 families from Kuching, Miri and Sibu, identified by MyKasih together with the Sarawak State Government, will be able to use their MyKad to buy daily essentials that include rice, bread, biscuits, flour, beverages, cooking oil, eggs, seasoning, noodles, and canned foods. These families can shop at any of the six Giant stores in Sarawak.

MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat said, “We admire Giant’s sensitivity towards the plight of the underprivileged. Part of corporate responsibility is to improve society by cultivating synergy between the government and the private sector in the eradication of poverty.”

“We are very thankful to Giant for supporting MyKasih’s food aid and student bursary programmes, both as a retail partner and as a donor. I hope that Giant’s goodwill and generous spirit will inspire others to reach out to low-income households through MyKasih,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau.

The annual MyKasih Charity Golf 2015 was a big hit despite the haze where a total of RM 804,950 was raised from the tournament held on 12 September at the Valley Course of Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam, Selangor.

This was the fourth annual golf fund-raiser MyKasih Foundation had organised, where proceeds of the golf tournament will go towards the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid, education and training programmes for underserved communities. To-date, MyKasih has reached out and provided aid to almost 227,000 families and students throughout the country, including 100 families in Jakarta, Indonesia.

During the lunch prize-giving ceremony, MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat thanked the 125 golfers for teeing off despite the haze.

“The MyKasih Charity Golf Tournament is our most significant yearly fund-raising event. Your presence today contributed towards its success. We are also extremely grateful to the sponsors and donor partners for the overwhelming support in raising a meaningful sum of RM 804,950 this year,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.

The amount raised included the Bulls Eye cash collection of RM 8,150, which none of the golfers were able to claim.

Testimonies

Between March and September 2015, a total of 424 students from eight schools had their sight assessed and spectacles were given free-of-charge to those who needed them. This eye-screening initiative is a joint collaboration between MyKasih Foundation and Dialogue in the Dark Malaysia (DID) to screen for visual impairments and prevent unnecessary blindness in children.

DID Founder Stevens Chan, who had lost his vision due to glaucoma, said “Childhood onset visual impairments often go undetected, which affect the students’ ability to read, write or simply concentrate in school. Worse, they are commonly mistaken for a learning disability. As such, we hope to organise more eye-screening activities for MyKasih students and provide those in need with visual aids to help them study better.”

The 424 students were screened by DID’s resident optometrist, Lynn Foo, together with a team of trained volunteers - called ‘Sight Guardians’, from MyKasih Foundation, Rotary Club of Lake Gardens, and Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya.

In thanking Chan and the Sight Guardians, MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat said, “Together with caring partners from the community - the dedicated team of volunteers from DID and Rotary, we are able to reach out to underprivileged students in the Klang Valley and assess their eye health with the hope that any vision impairments can be detected and corrected early enough so that it will not affect their learning experience. We hope to be able to complete the eye-screening for 700 students in the 17 selected schools by April 2016.”

On 9 August 2015, 150 Jah Hut Orang Asli families of Kampung Pian in Kuala Krau, Pahang participated in a health screening programme carried out by the local health and dental clinics at the village community hall. The activity is part of CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s community outreach for the 150 families it currently supports under the MyKasih food aid programme.

CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s Executive Director, Geoffrey Lim said, “Since January 2014, CLSA Chairman’s Trust has been providing monthly food aid to 150 Jah Hut families and schooling necessities for their school-going children. This year we wanted to hold a health screening event to raise awareness about diseases which are silent killers, like diabetes and hypertension.”

Health is wealth!

12 adults and 36 children braved the dental chair and had their teeth examined by dentists from the Department of Dentistry under the Ministry of Health.

85 adults had their blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels and Body Mass Index (BMI) checked to assess their risks of heart attack and stroke, while 20 women underwent pap smear tests for cervical cancer.

Pictorial posters on dengue and malaria were also put up at booths to inform the community on the diseases’ prevalence and to communicate precautionary measures families could take to ensure that their surrounding environment are not breeding grounds for the disease-bearing mosquitoes.

“We hope to help strengthen this community’s resilience towards environmental health impacts through nourishment and awareness,” added Lim.

MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat thanked CLSA Chairman’s Trust for aiding the community for almost two years.

“We are so grateful to have a foreign corporate donor from Hong Kong that is sensitive to the plight of the indigenous communities in Malaysia. We hope other organisations will follow in CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s caring footsteps and contribute towards a better living for the underserved,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.

Music lovers were in for a treat as three vocal powerhouses brought an unforgettable night of music and entertainment. JTI Malaysia brought together two of its community investment partners, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and MyKasih Foundation, for a charity night in aid of underprivileged communities. Proceeds from the sale of the Premiere night’s tickets on 7 August were channelled to the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme.

Azrani Rustam, Director, Corporate Affairs and Communications at JTI Malaysia said, “We see this as a mutually beneficial opportunity to bring together both our community investment partners. On one part, we are able to contribute positively to the advancement of local performing arts scene and on the other, a meaningful contribution is being made towards the underprivileged communities. Symphonic Swing

“We believe that staging Symphonic Swing would be a great opportunity to bring classical music appreciation to the wider audience in Malaysia and mark our successful collaboration with klpac for the sixth year running,” added Rustam.

“Symphonic Swing is the type of concert where you can just kick back, relax and unwind to some of the greatest music ever written and performed by some of our own greats. Junji, Ida and Peter definitely brought the house down with their sterling performance,” said Joe Hasham OAM, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of klpac.

klpac’s unique partnership with JTI Malaysia has enabled them to stage acclaimed productions such as ‘Rashomon’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Both those productions were also staged in aid of MyKasih Foundation.

65 Orang Asli primary students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) will benefit from a one-year interactive learning programme aimed at preparing them for their examinations. The ‘iCerdik’ online programme encourages students to apply what they have learned in the classroom through specially-prepared assessments and revision exercises.

The students involved are beneficiaries of the DIALOG-sponsored ‘Love My School’ bursary programme at SK Bukit Lanjan. During the introductory session on 18 September, both students and teachers navigated the online modules and familiarised themselves with the computers and netbooks which they had received from corporate donors and the Ministry of Education.

“We are grateful to DIALOG and MyKasih for bringing this educational programme to our students. We do see the need for it for our students – not only because it is an interactive method for effective learning, but that it will also allow the students to embrace technology in a fun and easy way,” said Khairul Anuar, Headmaster of SK Bukit Lanjan (Asli).

MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, who is also the Executive Chairman of DIALOG said, “The younger generation of today need to be tech-savvy as it is the way forward. We truly believe that effective learning comes from integrating technology as a learning tool. We would like to encourage donors to assist us in getting more students onto this programme.”
