FOOD FOR THOUGHTYOUR FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD: A SECRET OF TRUE OBEDIENCE

“If you love Me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” John 14: 15 - 16

By the fatherly nature of God, when man was created, God gave man the willpower of choice, to decide what to do and what to refrain from doing. Due to this innate power of choice given to man, man is then at liberty to either obey or disobey anyone even God Himself. Therefore, man at various instances has been confronted with situations that posit man in the driving seat of decisions which some being wise have chosen to obey God and have had the result of obedience which is Joy, great testimonies and won a place in the heart of God and some being shallow in their thinking have been deceived by the devil to foolishly disobey God and has earned destructions and total alienation from God’s presence.

While living in the flesh, true obedience to God is not as easy as anyone could think but when we surrender our heart to God, He comes in to perfect our imperfectness, subdue the flesh and quicken the Holy Spirit in us to obey God, makes the will of God pleasant to us as opposed to when in the flesh when true obedience to God seems impracticable. The man who attempts to keep the commandments of God from a sense of obligation merely because he is required to do so will never enter into the joy of obedience He does not obey. When the requirements of God are accounted a burden because they cut across human inclination, we may know that the life is not a Christian life. True obedience is the outworking of a principle within. it springs from the love of righteousness, the love of the law of God.

When our hearts are released unto God, He in return gives the Holy Spirit the helper unto us to enable our mortal body to be awake to obey God, and the closer we are to Him, the easier it becomes for us to obey God as we begin to take on the nature of God as we fellowship with Him daily. All true obedience comes from the heart. It was heart work with Christ. And if we consent, He will so identify Himself with our thoughts when obeying Him we shall be but carrying out our own impulses. The will, refined and sanctified, will find its highest delight in doing His service. When we know God as it is our privilege to know Him, our life will be a life of continual obedience. Through an appreciation of the character of Christ, through communion with God, sin will become hateful to us.

Conclusively, irrespective of how hard we strive to obey God, all our attempts after full obedience will be failures until we get access to His abiding fellowship. It is God's holy presence, consciously abiding with us, that keeps us from disobeying Him.

Have a blessed week as you get access to God’s abiding fellowship which guarantee your true and sincere obedience to Him always.

Your brother, vicar & Archdeacon ‘Seyi Pirisola.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

1. Joshua appreciated that the times were tough but he was able to speak in a resolute

manner for himself and his household. On what foundation must we build our homes to

have this manner of confidence? - Genesis 24: 1- 7, 2 Corinthians 6: 14 – 7: 1

2. In what ways are parents failing in their leadership responsibilities to our children? - 1

Samuel 3: 11 – 14, 1 Samuel 8: 1- 5. What is the way back? Joshua 1: 8

3. Wives are to “love, cherish and obey” their husbands and husbands are to love and

care for their wives. What are the major constraints to keeping to these God-assigned

roles? / How have you handled yours?

FOR REFLECTIONThe Israelites had to decide whether they would obey the Lord, who had proven His

trustworthiness, or obey the local gods, which were only man-made idols. It is easy to slip

into a quiet rebellion – going about life in your own way. But the times comes when you have

to choose who or what will control you. The choice is yours. Will it be God, your own limited

personality or another imperfect substitute? Once you have chosen to be controlled by

God’s Spirit, reaffirm your choice every day.

Although some people have distorted Paul’s teaching on submission by giving unlimited

authority to husbands, we cannot get around it. Paul told wives to submit to their husbands.

The fact that a teaching is not popular is no reason to discard it. According to the Bible, the

man is the Spiritual head of the family and his wife should acknowledge his leadership. But

real spiritual leadership involves service. Just as Christ served the disciples even to the

point of washing their feet, so the husband is to serve his wife. A wise and Christ-honouring

husband will not take advantage of his leadership role and a wise and Christ-honouring wife

will not try to undermine her husband’s leadership. Either approach causes disunity and

friction in marriage.

MEMORY VERSE (Joshua 24: 15)

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom

you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the river or the gods of the

Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household we will serve the

Lord.

3

But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. II Peter 3:13

SUNDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2018THEME: “Living To Please God In The Home”TEXT: Joshua 24: 14 – 18, Ephesians 5: 22 – 6:9, John 3: 1 – 21AIM: To explore ways of living in spite of the pressures and problem of modern life, to fulfil

God’s purpose for us in the Home.

INTRODUCTIONAt the heart of God’s creation is the Home. He created humanity, male and female and gave

them the mandate to procreate and raise up-Springs. To facilitate this, He made the woman

man’s appropriate help and companion. At His crucifixion, our Lord was mindful of His

responsibilities to His mother and formally handed her over to one of His disciples to care for

her. The home is not only a shelter but also a shield. It is a place to cool down after the heat

and pressures of the day’s work. It is the place to be understood after the day-long

misunderstanding and misrepresentation it is the place to remove the high-heeled shoes,

the false nails, the lip-stick, the layers of face powder and look and feel normal. It is the place

to remove the mask, drop the guards and be at peace. It is a place where you speak without

weighing your words or choosing them carefully. It is a place where you are free to be

yourself, trusting at the same time that you would not be misunderstood and be tabled for

sanctions. In every real sense, it is a place where you can be naked and not be

embarrassed. (Genesis 2: 25)

Unfortunately, most homes are an extension of the office where the rat-race prevails. Yes

there was the promise to love, cherish, and for the woman, also to obey. As the years roll on,

fulfilling these vows becomes more difficult. We all remember the vow to “forsake all

others and keep only” to the wife or husband. With pressures and “Circumstances”

some find themselves casting glances beyond the fence and being tempted to take the

“greener” grass on the other side. The net effect for most is misery and pains.

In this study, we will attempt to go back to what God ordained the home to be and to

commence the home-ward journey to that bliss which God intended our homes to be.

BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

STUDIES IN ACTS

INTRODUCTION:

During our last discussion, we saw the folly of choosing first and then asking the Holy Spirit

to bless your choice. We also learnt a lot of lessons from the fall of Judas Iscariot. Today, we

move to the next chapter of the Book of Acts, we pray that God will bless us richly in Jesus

name. Amen.

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GIVEN FOR THE HARVESTING OF SOULS

The feast of Pentecost is held from 6th to 13th of June after the harvesting of wheat. Acts 2:

1 – 4; Acts 2: 41. This shows clearly that the Holy Spirit choose this day of Pentecost to

come because the principal purpose of the Holy Spirit is to harvest souls an to separate the

wheat from the tares. John 16: 7 – 13; Exodus 32: 26 – 28.

2. THERE WAS A PURPOSE BEHIND THE TARRYING OF THE APOSTLES TOO

Some of the reasons why the apostles had to tarry long in the upper room before the Holy

Spirit descended on them are to have time to (i) Pray (ii) repent thoroughly (iii0 meditate (iv)

Surrender and (v) obey.

2 Chronicles 7: 14; 1 John 1:9; Romans 13: 8; Psalm 66: 18; 1 Corinthians 1: 20; 1

Corinthians 1: 25; Psalm 73: 21; 1 Samuel 2: 3 – 4; Psalm 73: 26; 1 Corinthians 1: 27;

Psalm 73: 27 –28; Romans 6: 13; John 4: 34; Acts 5: 32; Matthew 18: 19; Jeremiah 29:

13; Acts 1: 8, Ecclesiastes 9: 16 – 17.

PARISHIONERS’ BIRTHDAY As you are well aware, the Church is dynamic in nature and the membership keeps changing. However, we try as much as possible to capture the 'necessary' details of every parishioner, most especially, their birthdays. If your birthday is omitted or if you have any complaint, please see the vicar.
