Last Wednesday night Channel Nine’s show The Block hit a mid-week ratings high, with more than 1.5 million Australians tuning in to cheer on favourites Sophie and Dale

(and to cringe at Dani and Dan). It’s not the only show highlighting the successes and trials of home makeovers – Renovation Rescue and Backyard Blitz have also kept us glued to our screens in the past, which shows that as well as loving an inside look at the renovation process, we also really like to watch TV. This month’s cover story on home theatres will show you how to spend a night in front of the box in gold-class style. We also bring you a special lighting feature from the folks at Wide World of Lights – that’s on page 25.

WORDS JARNA BAUDINETTE

These days a family trip to the cinema is more expensive than it used to be, and so many

people are opting to stay in and watch a DVD instead. If you love relaxing with a good movie in the comfort of your own home, why not consider a home theatre as part of your renovation?

The fi rst step is to determine the technical and audiovisual equipment you will need, as this will govern the dimensions and setup of your room. Regardless of whether you want a full-blown home cinema experience – with projector, stepped fl oor and reclining seats – or just an upscale media room, it is crucial to get the technical requirements right before you begin designing the space.

Almost all home theatres will feature several key components, including a screen (either a high-defi nition television or a projector and screen combination), a Blu-ray

or DVD player and speakers. These components need to work together and unless you have specifi c knowledge in the area it is best to speak to an audiovisual technician, who can save you a lot of research (and potentially cash) by helping you fi nd the right equipment.

Whether you opt for a projector screen or television (and each is suited to different-sized rooms and types of viewing) you will need a good-quality surround-sound system, and an expert will help get the sound and balance right. Otherwise you might end up with poor audiovisual quality, meaning you can’t enjoy the room to its full potential. If you’re not tech-savvy, an expert can also design and install a system that is easy to control with minimal remotes and wires.

The advice from your audiovisual retailer will also help you decide how much space you need in the room itself. Consider how many people you want to seat and what style of seating you prefer. If you opt for plush, cinema-style recliners you will need a comfortable amount of room between each chair as well as a reasonable distance between the seating and the screen – this differs depending on whether you opt for a projector or television screen, so be sure to take it into account when deciding where to set up your home theatre.

When you are renovating there are two main options – you can choose to convert an existing room or house the theatre in a purpose-built extension. The theatre room needs to be closed off so converting an open-plan living area won’t work.

Adding an extension means you have more control over the dimensions of the room, as you can build it specifi cally to suit your technical requirements. After consulting with your local audiovisual technician you will need to work with your builder to design the extension, and possibly have a draftsperson draw up the plans.

Your theatre needs to be in a room that is reasonably isolated from the rest of the home and allows little sound or light to enter from the outside (this means as few windows and doors as possible, so if you don’t have ducted air-conditioning invest in a split-system unit for the space). Soundproofi ng your home theatre is particularly important, especially if yours is a family home – you don’t want one or two family members watching an

With the technical and spatial aspects sorted

you can get started on the decor. Choose a matt,

non-refl ective paint for the walls and sound-absorbing carpet for the fl oor, and be

creative with the rest – a home theatre is the perfect

space to experiment with striking, contemporary

design. Opt for smooth, futuristic surfaces and treat

yourself to those plush leather recliners you’ve been dreaming of. See page 24 for inspiration then sit back, relax and

enjoy the movie.

LOOKING GOOD

action movie to disrupt others’ study, work or sleep.

If you are designing a purpose-built space make sure it is well insulated, which will help with soundproofi ng – you can even buy specialised soundproofi ng batts, which will minimise noise leakage, and be sure to soundproof all four walls (so your top-quality sound system doesn’t annoy your neighbours).

Soundproofi ng an existing room is a little more challenging, but you can purchase specialised acoustic materials to hang from the walls, and it is also worth investing in a solid door for the home theatre room. Most of the internal doors used in homes are very thin, but choosing a solid one and adding soundproof seals around it will greatly minimise the amount of noise that gets into – and out of – your home theatre.

Get togetherFor a clean, contemporary kitchen it is hard

to beat the classic combination of timber and white. This decorating style is especially suited to beachside or coastal homes, and is a great option if your home has existing timber fl oors.

The key is to create balance between the design elements without overusing any one colour or texture. If you have timber fl oors you can match these with timber cabinets and dining chairs, and lighter-coloured benches and appliances. Or you can opt for white 2-pac cabinetry and pair this with a benchtop of rich, polished timber.

If you do decide on timber cabinetry you will have a choice of solid wood or timber veneer. Solid timber is the more expensive option but has the bonus of allowing for

decorative panels and etchings, giving your cabinet doors and drawers a three-dimensional look. Timber veneer is for fl at applications only but is durable and very easy to clean, and is also available in fl at-pack kits you can install yourself.

The internal cabinetry in your kitchen will most likely be white, and this can show through in the gaps between your doors and drawers (especially if you are using a dark timber). If you are concerned about this spoiling the effect of your kitchen, speak to your cabinetmaker about having your internal cabinetry

edged on the leading edges with a wooden-look material.

Alternatively, if you prefer the look of a wooden benchtop ensure the material is properly sealed and polished, and to prevent unsightly staining or bubbling be careful not to allow spilled water to sit on the surface for too long.

Finish your kitchen with stainless steel appliances and accessories with one or two key feature colours – sky blue, red and yellow all work well with this combination. For a really stylish look carry the same tones through to your dining and living areas.

Lean & cleanWhile it may be the smallest room in

the house, the ensuite is often one of the most used, especially for couples or large families. For busy parents, a private bathroom offers a much-needed escape, and so it is important to design a space that is relaxed and practical.

When renovating, if your home has an existing ensuite you may be able to retain the original plumbing and simply replace dated cabinetry and fi xtures.

Design musts for a smaller bathroom include light colours and plenty of refl ective surfaces. Opt for big mirror above the vanity, a clear glass shower enclosure and large, white tiles – as well as creating the illusion of space these are much easier to clean than smaller varieties.

Bright beautiesDESIGN MUSTS FOR A SMALLER BATHROOM

INCLUDE LIGHT COLOURS AND REFLECTIVE SURFACES.

If you will be sharing the ensuite, look at your morning schedule and consider whether you need a dual vanity – one sink may suffi ce, and if so you will be able to maximise bench and storage space. When it comes to stashing bath and beauty products, consider opting for his-and-hers storage options. Dual cabinets or extra shelving behind the mirror will provide enough room for everyone’s soap, make-up and razors. And rather than the traditional protruding or hanging shelf, consider a built-in recess in the shower wall to hide your shampoo.

If you are designing an ensuite from scratch you can be creative with the layout, so make a realistic list of your ‘must have’ features. For example, a spacious tub can offer hours of relaxation, but time-poor people may get more benefi t from a larger shower. Either way, the most important consideration is how much privacy you want between the ensuite and the bedroom. Stylish, open-plan designs look great and allow you to continue your colour scheme between the two rooms, but if you would like the ensuite to feel more enclosed put it behind a partial wall or walk-in robe.

Goodbye greyMost residential houses come with a

double garage boasting a standard, unfi nished concrete fl oor, and anyone who uses the surface for working on cars or DIY projects knows it tends to gather dirt and sawdust and also stains very easily.

On top of that, unfi nished concrete also looks fairly ordinary, and doesn’t provide a very stylish backdrop to display your car, bike or boat.

If you have a spare weekend you can easily make over your garage using a specialised fl oor paint, which will create a smooth, even surface that is easy to clean and looks great.

First, clean and sweep the fl oor thoroughly using a stiff broom. If there are stubborn oil stains remove these with a commercial concrete cleaner and stiff-bristled brush, and

be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves for this.

Painting the surface will draw attention to imperfections, so sand back raised areas and repair any cracks with fi ller.

Before painting the fl oor you will need to etch the surface – you can buy a specialised product from hardware or paint retailers, and some brands even supply kits with the etcher and paint included. After applying the etcher rinse the fl oor thoroughly and allow it to dry fully (overnight if necessary).

When it is dry you can begin painting. Cut in around the edges using a large brush and

then paint the fl oor surface using a roller, working with one square metre at a time.

Depending on the desired look you can opt for a gloss fi nish or a decorative, textured surface. Avoid gloss if your garage fl oor is likely to become wet, as slipping over on concrete can be very dangerous – choose a non-slip paint instead.

For a textured fi nish you can sprinkle decorative fl akes onto the surface before applying the second coat, or you can purchase pre-textured garage paint and use that as a top coat. Speak to your paint retailer about the best choice for your project.

Sticky issueIf you want to make a statement in a particular

room, gorgeous patterned wallpaper might be the way to go. Originally popular in Renaissance Europe, wallpaper is enjoying a comeback thanks to style-savvy renovators.

The days of wallpapering an entire room may be behind us – four walls of the same print can look too busy and overwhelming. Instead, the current trend is to paper either one or two feature walls and then match this with a paint colour that complements.

The tools and adhesive for hanging your own wallpaper are available at most paint retailers, where you can also browse a catalogue of colours and patterns. You will need to order your wallpaper, so carefully measure the walls fi rst.

If you are hanging wallpaper over existing paintwork you will need to wash away dust or

grime and sand back any chipped paint. If you are hanging the paper onto drywall prime the surface fi rst with a specialised wallpaper primer.

Wallpaper is hung in vertical sheets cut from a roll, and you will need to line up each sheet with the previous one. Start wallpapering in a corner or behind a door, where seams won’t be as noticeable. Apply pre-mixed paste to the sheet with a large brush or paint roller, working from the middle of the sheet to the edges. Secure the top half of the sheet to the very top of the wall (leaving several centimetres of excess to be

trimmed), and gently smooth the paper onto the wall with your hands, using a damp sponge to remove any air bubbles. A small roller will help secure the seams fi rmly.

You can then trim the excess from the top and bottom with a putty knife, wipe down the surface to remove paste and move onto the next panel.

Remember, the more heavily patterned the paper, the trickier it is to hang. If you have your heart set on a metallic motif but don’t have the skills or patience, don’t risk a messy, unprofessional fi nish – have an expert do the hard work for you.

Work on itThese days, more people are working from

home than ever before – whether it’s full-time operating a home-based business or a few hours here and there catching up on emails. When you add the time spent on online banking, Facebook and Skype and kids’ homework, it seems every contemporary family home could use a designated offi ce or study space.

If you’re renovating your home and would like to add a study, don’t settle for putting a desk and laptop into the smallest guest bedroom. The more functional and organised your workspace, the more productive you will be, so take the time to plan your home offi ce with adequate storage and fi ttings.

If you will be working from home regularly and can allocate an entire room, do so – having your workspace separate from the living areas will cut

Get it rightTHE MORE FUNCTIONAL AND ORGANISED YOUR

WORKSPACE, THE MORE PRODUCTIVE YOU WILL BE.

down on distractions. Rather than the traditional fl at-pack variety, consider installing a custom-built desk around several walls. This will offer more bench and fi ling space and can provide separate work areas for mum, dad and the kids. Also consider a designated bookcase or shelving area – across one wall is a good option, or install horizontal fl oating shelves above your desk space.

If space is at a premium in your home and you can’t afford to lose a whole room, get creative with the available area. A large built-in robe in one bedroom can be converted into

a small offi ce – remove the existing shelves and install a built-in desk and some high shelving. The offi ce can then be hidden behind fold-away doors when it’s not in use.

Alternatively a narrow alcove or underused corridor will do – to work comfortably on a laptop you’ll need a space at least 50 centimetres deep with a 45-centimetre clearance on either side.

Whatever size offi ce or study area you choose, make sure you speak to your electrician during the wiring stage so you have enough electricity, phone and data points to work effectively.

Exposing the true value of renovator’s delights

Would-be renovators are often warned to avoid the pitfalls

of over-capitalising, which can be diffi cult when you don’t know how much value your hard work will add to a home. To get an idea, buyers in the market for their fi rst fi xer-upper can speak to real estate agents who are experienced in the local area, and can now also take advantage of a new design service from Archicentre.

The building design, inspection and advice service of the Australian Institute of Architects has just launched a national low-fi xed price design concept service designed to show potential buyers a home’s true renovation potential with an architect’s design concept.

General manager David Hallett says the Archicentre Renovation Plan will provide potential buyers of unrenovated properties with a vision for future renovations and the increased appeal of the property.

“It is these properties that have the most potential for capital gain

and getting the design right to create a sustainable, well-thought through design concept is a great way of promoting the hidden potential of the property,” Hallett says.

The service has been designed with home sellers in mind, and will better equip them to attract potential renovators during the sale process.

“The service, which can be booked online, will see Archicentre select an architect who has experience in the type of home being sold, whether it is a period or a more modern design, to visit the vendor’s home and discuss the brief to create a design concept that will maximise the potential of the property for sale,” Hallett says.

But it will also be a handy tool for buyers looking to get an idea of how much value their dream renovation will add to a property, and also how much it will cost – the service also includes a broad opinion on a given project’s construction costs.

Privacy pleaseIf you are creating a new outdoor

area as part of your renovation, think about how private you want this space to be. These days suburban homes can be quite close together, and you want to enjoy your new outdoor area without worrying your neighbours can hear every word you say.

When designing your space try to situate it as privately as possible. While you do need to take into account your home’s layout and aspect, you may be able to avoid putting the outdoor area adjacent to your neighbours’. Consult with your builder or an architect to settle

Green screenTO BRING NATURE INTO THE SPACE, PLANT A ROW OF HEDGES ALONG THE EDGE OF YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS.

on the best design for your block. Otherwise, there are a number

of ways you can easily screen your outdoor area to offer shade and privacy. Shutters or louvres around the patio or deck give a closed-off feel while still allowing light and breezes to move through the area. Opt for a wood or distressed timber fi nish to blend with the surrounds. To bring nature into the space, plant a row of hedges or shrubs along the edge of your outdoor area or fence line. You can also hang potted plants from inexpensive trellis to create a herb garden that doubles as a privacy screen.

Sunshine Coast renovators looking to deck out their homes with new lighting should be planning a trip down the Bruce

Highway. This is because as well as its local Currimundi store, Sunshine Coast-based lighting specialist Wide World of Lights has a second showroom at Morayfi eld, which is the largest lighting showroom in Australia.

Located on Morayfi eld Road, the store services the entire Brisbane and Sunshine Coast districts and has been operating for fi ve years.

Renowned for having one of the widest product ranges in the country – with more than 100 Australian suppliers and many more brands imported from overseas – Wide World of Lights is owned and operated by the Camilleri family, including Charles and Agnes and their sons Stephen, Chris and Anthony. Chris is the manager of the Morayfi eld store and heads a team of 12 staff, whom he says are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and have a reputation for going above and beyond for their clients.

“Their experience extends to advising clients on their lighting and cooling needs for house plans, and commercial and industrial buildings,” Chris says. “We promise the best price and right advice the fi rst time, and we’ve never come across a situation we couldn’t light. When speaking with clients it’s not uncommon to hear “We have never seen such a range before, I need to spend the night here!”

This focus on customer service is part of Wide World of Lights’ long-term commitment to understanding their clients’ needs. The business has been operating on the Sunshine Coast for more than 18 years and general manager Stephen says over that time, the owners have gained the knowledge and expertise to assist their clients with any issues they may experience during the renovation process. Wide World of Lights also counts more than 200 active trade clients among its regular customers, and offers in-home warranties on all products supplied.

Those renovators who can’t make the trip to Morayfi eld can visit the local showroom or shop online. Wide World of Lights’ online store was launched just over 12 months ago and features a chat function, which allows customers to speak with a sales representative via their computer.

There are two main types of lamp – task lamps and those used purely for ambient lighting. Task lamps are

most commonly found on desks, benches or tables and will illuminate

a workspace while you’re reading, typing or cooking. To minimise

shadows choose a shorter lamp and position it off to the side – to the

left if you’re right-handed, and vice versa. Before buying a bulb check the

wattage of your new lamp, and stick to the recommended amount.

If you’re one of those people who always forgets which switch goes with which light, a centrally controlled lighting system may be for

you. Smart wiring allows you to integrate your lighting, heating and cooling into one system,

which you can control from a touchpad or remote. To cut down your power bills

you need to make the most of

any sunlight entering the room.

Rather than overlighting with

harsh fl uorescents, position your

furniture within the room so

they capture natural light and

then accentuate this with soft,

directional lighting.

so andn

sossossssoss ft,

This is especially important in multipurpose spaces

such as the kitchen and living areas, where you

need to balance practicality (for preparing meals

or cleaning) with ambience. Multiple light sources

– overhead downlights paired with wall sconces,

for example – will offer enough fl exibility for

a range of tasks, and will also allow you to have

dim, soft light for entertaining.

Bathrooms need soft, functional lighting. Recessed lighting installed directly above the mirror can cast shadows on the face, which isn’t ideal when you’re shaving or applying make-up. Avoid these and opt for slightly pink-toned halogens mounted vertically on each side of the mirror – the longer the fi xture, the more evenly the light will be spread.
