Mov ing day t ip sWe have prepared this quick guide for you: Ensure you have reserved adequate parking at both thecollection and delivery addresses. This is essential to avoiddisruption to your removal company and new neighbours. Explain and label any items that are not to be taken by yourmovers. Make sure you have left spare keys and instructions forthe heating, alarms or any other appliances you are leaving foryour old property. At the delivery address you will be requiredto direct the movers to place items where you want them.

Label rooms to make reference to the parts of your new homeeasier. Refer to your floor plan and give a copy to the removalcompany. Plan where everything will go in your new home.Arrange quotations and discuss your move with a localprofessionals for work you need doing. Members ofassociations have to abide by strict codes of conduct.Remember that the cheapest quote is not always the best oneto choose.

Make sure you have confidence in the removal company youchoose. You can visit the British Association of Removers “BAR”www.bar.co.uk to ensure you choose a “BAR” member, thiswill ensure your move goes smoothly, in the unlikely event thatsomething goes wrong, you have someone to turn too.

Who to use and when should you book?

Moving home is often quoted as being one of the most stressfulexperiences we ever go through in our lives. The whole processof packing up our belongings, leaving our home and moving topastures new is bad enough - add to that the fact that we haveto entrust our possessions and their transport to completestrangers and it's no wonder our stress levels soar!

The problem is we don't tend to move often enough in our livesto make it a process we get used to. We're generally all noviceswhen it comes to moving and it shows! But, like any process, moving is all about being smart and knowing what you're doing.

Choosing a good moving company is difficult. We've all heardhorror stories from friends and families about disreputablecompanies and it's vital to sort the good from the bad as soon asyou can. Wherever you live, you can guarantee that there willbe various moving companies just waiting to help you out. Yourhardest task is choosing one that's right for you - it's vital thatyou get this choice right. Getting it wrong can cost you time, money and heartache. Choosing a moving company is very muchan individual choice and your decision should be tailored to youractual needs.

Nowadays, moving companies can offer you a wide range ofservices on top of their basic removal competencies. These caninclude packing, the sale or hire of packing materials, unpackingand storage facilities. Some companies will even pack yourpossessions, transport them, clean your new home, unpack yourpossessions and arrange them at the other end according to yourinstructions. These additional services will obviously cost youmore money.

As a guideline you should have chosen your moving company atleast 4-8 weeks before your moving day. Leave it too long andyou'll find that the good companies are fully booked and you'llhave less choice in the matter. It's far better to choose and bookyour company as far in advance as possible. You should betalking to your shortlist as soon as you have an estimated movingday. Bear in mind that movers are often busy at the end of themonth, on Fridays and at weekends and may charge more forthese premium times. Many will tell you thatthey have certain quiet days - such as Mondays- they may even be prepared to offer you adiscount to move during their less busyperiods. It's always worth asking!

Plan to update yourself and discover any weaknesses in your securitysystem that may have had previously. Lock up your home, even if yougo out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through anunlocked door or window.Consider changing all the locks and tumblers when you move intoyour new house. For the most effective alarm system, conceal allwiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she candisconnect the security system.Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switchlights and radios on and off when you're not at home. Immediatelyreplace or repair a faulty alarm. Many people ignore an alarm thatgoes off periodically.A spring-latch lock is easy prey for burglars who are "loiding"experts. Loiding is the method of slipping a plastic credit card againstthe latch tongue to depress it and unlock the door. A deadbolt defiesany such attack. It is only vulnerable when there is enough spacebetween the door and its frame to allow an intruder to use powertools or a hacksaw .If you lose your keys, change the locksimmediately. Before turning your house key over to a professionalhouse cleaner for several hours, make sure the person is honest andreputable as well as hardworking. Check all references thoroughly. Instead of keeping a spare key in a mailbox, under the doormat, oron a nail behind the garage, wrap the key in foil or put it in a smallcontainer and bury it where you can easily find it if you need it.

Don't leave notes for service people or family members on the door. These act as a welcome mat for a burglar. If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lightingwith an infrared detector. Most thieves don't want to be observedtrying to get in a door. Talk to your neighbours about any suspiciouspeople or strange cars you notice lurking about. To keep your toolsfrom being stolen, paint the handles. Thieves avoid items that areeasy to identify.Trees located near windows or shrubbery that might shield a burglarfrom view can be major flaws in your home-protection plan. Consideryour landscaping plan in light of your protection needs.Ask for credentials from any sales-person who requests entry to yourhome. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professionalburglars use this cover to check out homes. If you're doubtful, checkwith the person's office before letting him or her in.Do not list yourfull name on your mailbox or your entry in the telephone book. Useonly your initial and your last name.If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call amechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the callyourself. Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisydog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawnto their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs donot make good pets. Obedience training and attack training areentirely different, and only the former is appropriate for a house pet.Be safe and be happy in your new home.

With increasingly busy lifestyles and mosthouseholds now owning more than onevehicle, gardens seem to be on a decrease asmore people are deciding to remove theirgardens in favour of driveways and gravel. For some this is their only choice, howeverthere are those who decide not to have agarden due to lack of time, lack of knowledgeor just do not know where to start.

If this is the case, I can assure you there areways of having a garden or even a smallarea to enjoy that does not require lots ofmaintenance.

If you start out small with low maintenanceplants you will soon discover you maybecome a budding gardener, seeingsomething you’ve planted grow and flourishis a very rewarding feeling especially if youdecide to grow your own fruit and veg.

Even more importantly a garden canbecome a home to our native wildlifewhich has been struggling in recent yearsdue to lack of habitat. Bees and Hedgehogsare two of the creatures that are findingtimes tough at the moment.

A garden does not have to be perfectlymanicured to look good and be a home towildlife. Sowing wildflower seeds forexample can be enough to attract all kindsof pollinators to the garden, as well asgiving you an excellent display of colourand beauty. As well as having majorbenefits for the environment and wildlife, your garden can be a great tool for gettingchildren out of the house and even gettingthem interested in plants and the world ofnature.

There are lots of activities that children canundertake in the garden, for exampleplanting flowers, growing fruit andvegetables, not only will this give them theexperience of planting something andwatching it grow, but they can also eat thefruits of their labour!

If you are a new gardener, just need ideas orrequire help to keep on top of what youhave, please give me a call:07969522458 or 01543 [email protected]

I believe that every house should have a garden

Although lighting is often treated as anafterthought, good lighting can makeor break a home. We may spend hours

pondering over paint charts, but it isactually the light that’s shows off

a space to its best advantage.

Things to consider whenaddressing lighting in yourhouse is, the orientation ofthe property & how muchnatural light you havealready, what the room isused for, what is on displayin the room, who uses theroom & what time of day

will the room be used.

Make a plan of the roomindicating fixed features such as

fireplaces, doors and windows andwhere your plug sockets are located,

will help with the planning process.

Although you will be creating light foreach room at a time, you must take

into consideration the over feel of thehome into account.

A successful lighting scheme is madeup of several layers, such as natural, general, accent & task light. Carefulconsideration to each of these layerswill create the atmosphere you desire, creating a comfortable andharmonious living space.

Most lighting specialists offer apersonal onsite service to help youwith your lighting project. Theirexpertise is this field can be moneywell spent.

The EPC rates the home's performancein terms of energy use per squaremetre of floor area, energy efficiencybased on fuel costs, and environmentalimpact based on carbon dioxide (CO2)emissions. This provides an energyefficiency rating and an environmentalimpact (CO2) rating. There are seven bands for both of theseratings, from A to G. The energyefficiency rating is colour-coded fromgreen to red, with the green end of thescale indicating that the home is veryenergy efficient, with lower running costs, and the red end of the scaleindicating it is not energy efficient and has higher running costs. There is also a numerical rating from 1 - 100. The bigger the number themore energy efficient the home is and the lower the fuel bills will be.The environmental impact rating is colour-coded from blue to grey, signifying 'very environmentally friendly - lower CO2 emissions' at the blueend of the scale through to 'not environmentally friendly - higher CO2emissions' at the grey end.Again, there is a numerical rating, from 1 - 100, and the bigger the number, the less impact the house has on the environment.

Estimated fuel costsThe EPC assessor uses standardised assumptions about the home's occupancy, heating patterns and geographical location to construct a table thatindicates how much it will cost to provide lighting, heating and hot water tothis dwelling. The table sets out the current energy use alongside the potential use if arange of recommendations are followed. The same is done for carbondioxide emissions.Costs are listed for lighting, heating and hot water - again, there is afigure for the current and potential cost, showing how much could besaved in cash terms.

If you are scrutinising an EPC, always check thedate the certificate was issued, because fuelprices can increase over time.Having provided details of actual and potentialenergy use and cost outlay, the EPC provides asummary of the home's energy performance-related features. These include walls, roof, floor, windows, main heating, heating controls, secondaryheating (if applicable), hot water and lighting. Each element is assessed against the following scale: Verypoor/Poor/Average/Good/Very good. So, for example, your wall might bedescribed as: Cavity wall, as built (no insulation). It would then probably bedescribed as 'poor' for its performance in terms of both energy efficiencyand environmental impact. A pitched roof with 250mm loft insulation, however, might warrant being described as 'good'.If there was low energy lighting in 75% of fixed outlets, this would rank as'very good' by both measures. After taking all the individual ratings into account, the assessor would decidethe home's overall energy efficiency and environmental impact ratings asshown in the colour-coded charts.

EPC recommendationsThe EPC provides a list of suggested measures to achieve cost effectiveimprovements to performance ratings. The table outlines the typical savingsper year and the potential performance ratings after the improvements havebeen made. The improvements are divided into 'lower cost measures' of upto £500 and 'higher cost measures' for larger amounts. So, for example, low cost measures such as fitting cavity wall insulationmight achieve a typical annual saving of over £400, while installing lowenergy lighting in all fixed outlets would deliver a saving of over £11. Highcost measures might include fitting a hot water cylinder thermostat orreplacing an old boiler with a more efficient model.Further suggestions - for example, fitting double glazing and solar heatingpanels - are included for those aiming for the highest possible standards fortheir home.

Add Style toYour Home

Shabby Chic (pronounced ’sheek’ ) is a form ofinterior design where furniture and furnishings areeither chosen for their appearance of age and sign ofwear and tear or where new items are distressed toachieve the appearance of an antique.

At the same time, a soft, opulent, yet cottage styledécor, often with an affected feel is emphasised todifferentiate it from genuine period décor.

Don’t let the word ‘shabby’ fool you when adaptingthe principles of shabby chic style into a room.

The look may be unstructured and lacking in formalrules but this timeless aesthetic can add an effortlesselegance to your home. With handicrafts, salvagedfurniture and vintage textiles available not only inflea markets, but also in retail shops (oftenreproductions) – you don’t have to search high andlow for the perfect piece.

Shabby Chic is budget-friendly and easy to acquire.
