GOSPEL REFLECTION
The episode in today's Gospel is particularly special, because the only way the evangelists would have known about it would have been if Christ had told it to his disciples himself. No one else was there. The Lord must have opened up his heart to them about this seminal moment in his autobiography, which occurred immediately (Mk 1:12) after he was baptised in the Jordan by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit led him into the huge desert between the mountain of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea so that he could pray to the Father about the public ministry which he was about to commence. He prayed and fasted for an incredible 40 days, which obviously would have left him physically weak and famished. It was at this moment that the Devil came to him to tempt him. Much like God the Father had once allowed Job to be tested, the same Father allowed his Son to be tempted. In the temptations Jesus suffered and later described to his disciples, the devil brought out in a pristine form the types of temptation that Christ would undergo in his public ministry and that each of us undergoes in our lives. By Focusing on how Christ responded, we, too, can learn how to react to the various temptations we encounter. - from a reflection on the Gospel by Fr John Landry, at the Catholic Culture website

St. Bernardines SVdP Conference 2015 Report Saint Vincent de Paul Society has been active in our Parish for another year. During 2015, through the grace of God, the St. Bernadine’s Regents Park Conference provided assistance to 573 families and / or individuals. This compares with 405 cases in 2014, and represents a 40% increase in requests for assistance in one year. The Conference area for assistance includes Browns Plains, Regents Park, Hillcrest, Forestdale, Boronia Heights, Drewvale, Greenbank, Park Ridge and Park Ridge South. Expenditure for the year totaled $34,390.
Most assistance was in the form of Essentials Cards purchased from Woolworths. There were also clothes and furniture orders, some bills paid, and we carried out physical work in a small number of cases - mowing, storage removal, etc. Income for the year comprised $27,000 from SVDP regional grants, and $5455 from donations. The remainder of $1935 came from last year’s bank balance. Christmas Appeal - Donations from the parish and school as part of the Christmas Appeal totaled $3093, consisting of $1500 from staff at St. Bernardines School, a Parish donation of $300, major private donations of $200, with the remaining $1093 coming from bauble sales, cash envelopes, and other miscellaneous donations. Many gifts were provided by parishioners at the Gifting Tree; school families provided sufficient goods to fill 100 eco bags; and 50 hampers were donated by John Mickel, former member for Logan. This is a wonderful result, as all this came from the school, parish and parishioners on top of their own Christmas expenses. I’d also like to thank Linus Power, Member for Logan, and his assistant Cheryl for their assistance in storing the hampers, and helping to distribute the gifts and hampers on the weekend before Christmas. Likewise I wish to thank other people who helped with the Christmas distribution. As a result of your generosity, 23 families received Christmas gifts and hampers, and another 27 families received hampers, 50 families in all. On behalf of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, I thank the parishioners, parish, school staff and parents for your generosity during the year and leading up to Christmas. Most of all I’d like to thank our Conference members who do the work, week in, week out. Bob Crowley President St Bernardine’s SVDP Conference
