c Mary Ann Evans was born in 1819 in Warwickshire, England. She was the youngest of fivechildren. She had two brothers and two sisters. Her favourite brother was Isaac. In one of hernovels, she wrote about a brother and sister who are a lot like her and Isaac.

A disastrous expeditiona They reached the Gulf of Carpentaria on February 9, 1861, but they did not actually see the sea.

They had very little food, and so they turned around. They had food for five weeks, but the tripback was ten weeks. Gray soon died from exhaustion. Burke, Wills, and King were very weakwhen they returned to the camp at Cooper’s Creek on April 21, 1861. Brahe was not there, buthe left a message on a tree that told the explorers where to look for the buried food.

b Robert Burke (1820–1861) and William Wills (1834–1861) were the first Europeans to crossAustralia from south to north. They both died from exhaustion and hunger on the return trip.

c The explorers left Melbourne on August 20, 1860. Others in the expedition included John King,Charles Gray, and William Brahe. They made a camp at Cooper’s Creek in November, andBrahe stayed there and waited for many months.

d Going home they were helped by Aboriginals who gave them food and water. The men alsoate their last two camels. Wills became weak, so they left him with some of the food. Soonafter that, Burke died (June 20, 1861). King returned for Wills, but found him dead too. Theexpedition was a disaster.
