At the heart of the Musica Viva Festival is our collaboration with the Australian Youth Orchestra and its incredible Chamber Players Program that provides Australia’s brightest young musicians with personal contact and instruction from some of the great musical artists of the world. Heading that list of artists in 2017 is legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman and the Zukerman Trio, featuring JUNO Award-winning cellist Amanda Forsyth, and long-time concert partner Angela Cheng on piano.Reprising his outstanding contribution to the 2013 Festival is the wonderful American pianist Lambert Orkis, who continued to assist some of the AYO players after that festival ended. We also feature the electrifying Australian

saxophone virtuoso Amy Dickson, who presents a diverse range of repertoire culminating in the world premiere of new music for sax and string quartet by Ross Edwards.UK-based group the Elias Quartet are now regulars on the Musica Viva concert roster, but make their first Festival appearance in 2017. They are joined by Festival stalwarts the Goldner String Quartet and unite with them in the final concert for the world premiere of a string octet by brilliant young Adelaide composer Jakub Jankowski. Inaugural participants in Musica Viva’s new FutureMakers career and development initiative are the virtuosic Arcadia Winds, who have developed from being AYO members at the last Festival to mainstage Festival artists in this one.

The 2017 Festival will also feature performances and demonstrations from some of Musica Viva’s finest “In Schools” ensembles, including music training for youngsters as well as entertainment and enlightenment for the grown-ups. The life of a classical musician typically involves inordinate hours of repetitious rehearsal to hone muscles, mind and reflexes to a lightning pitch. That part of the process is not a spectator sport, and is about the only part of chamber music performance that you won’t see in this festival. Every other part of a chamber musician’s life exists only for the spectators, and if you can think of anything we’ve missed, do let us know!

The Australian Youth Orchestra is one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative training organisations for young pre-professional musicians aged 12 to 30. AYO occupies a special place in the musical culture of Australia, where one generation of brilliant musicians inspires the next, where aspiring musicians get a taste of life as professional musicians, and where like-minded individuals from all over the country gather for intense periods to learn from each other, study and perform.AYO Chamber Players offers intensive ensemble training for pre-professional musicians interested in chamber performance and enriching musicianship. In 2017 AYO Chamber Players will be integrated into the Musica Viva Festival. Immersed in this international celebration of chamber music, players will have the opportunity to learn from and perform with some of the world’s greatest chamber musicians. In 2017, 34 young musicians will take part in the AYO Chamber Players program, performing in string quartets, piano trios and a wind quintet. During the Festival, participants will be mentored by visiting ensembles and artists and will perform in a series of public concerts. See pages 10 and 11 for performance times and locations.

Pinchas Zukerman is a superstar of the violin world, performing as soloist and director in the finest concert halls around the globe. He is especially famous for his work with young artists for the Zukerman Chamber Players – since chamber music is at the core of classical performance. In the Trio he is joined by leading Canadian cellist Amanda Forsyth, whose extensive musical achievements won her a coveted JUNO Award; and by their virtuoso friend, Angela Cheng, the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition, among other honours. The Trio’s love of playing together makes their performances a joy for listeners, and has led to critically acclaimed appearances on five continents. The intimate size and perfect acoustics of the Verbrugghen Hall are an ideal setting for experiencing this legendary ensemble.

Lambert Orkis’s substantial career includes over a decade of concerts as the preferred recital partner of cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Likewise, his celebrated duo with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has appeared to capacity audiences worldwide, and their many recordings and DVDs for Deutsche Grammophon include award-winning sonata cycles by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. Lambert Orkis is also noted for his interpretations of contemporary works by friends such as George Crumb and Richard Wernick. He appears regularly at prestigious festivals throughout the world, including Salzburg and Lucerne. He performs as a member of the Kennedy Center Chamber Players and the Smithsonian’s Castle Trio (on period instruments), and is Principal Keyboard of the National Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Piano at Temple University in Philadelphia. The Federal Republic of Germany bestowed upon him the Cross of the Order of Merit in acknowledgment of his accomplishments.

Formed at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music and nurtured in Germany, the Elias Quartet is established as one of Britain’s foremost chamber ensembles. With a substantial career launched with support from the Wigmore Hall Emerging Artists scheme, the BBC New Generation Artists program and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust award, the Quartet has won hearts through ‘playing of wonderful exuberance and fire’ (The Guardian). The Elias Quartet comprises two sisters, Sara and Marie Bitlloch on violin and cello, with Donald Grant on violin and Martin Saving on viola. Together they are a tight-knit, almost telepathic musical unit, whose artistic curiosity takes them into extraordinary sonic adventures, happily shared with delighted listeners.

Amy Dickson is one of Australia’s most notable musical exports. A trailblazer, she was the first saxophonist to win the ABC Young Performers Award; and the Prince’s Prize, the Gold Medal of the Royal Overseas League, and a Classic BRIT Award. She has topped the UK classical charts. Now based in London, Amy Dickson was born in Sydney and took her first saxophone lesson aged six. She made her concerto debut at 16, and at 18 made her first recording as soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. That year she moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music, and then at the Amsterdam Conservatorium. Since then, her career has been on an extraordinary trajectory, balancing popular acclaim with critical adulation for her warm stage presence and astounding technical and musical abilities.

Arcadia Winds was formed in 2013 by five like-minded young musicians from around Australia, who shared a love of playing together and a passion for chamber music. Graduates of the Australian National Academy of Music, they have played together in various combinations for years as members of the Australian Youth Orchestra. Each is an outstanding soloist in their own right. In its short history, Arcadia Winds (formerly the Arcadia Quintet) has won competitions and performed in leading venues and festivals, including the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival (2015) and the Four Winds Festival (2014 and 2016). In 2015 they were selected as the first generation of Musica Viva’s prestigious artist development initiative – FutureMakers. The Arcadias participated in the AYO Chamber Players program at the 2015 Musica Viva Festival, so it is a special pleasure to welcome them as colleagues on the main stage.

ARCADIAWINDSThe founding members of the

Goldner String Quartet have played together for more than 20 years, making them one of the most experienced ensembles in professional chamber music anywhere in the world. Yet, every note is still played as though it is a fresh discovery, and the glances of humour, or understanding, which pass between them on stage only add to the audience’s enjoyment of their exceptionally personal approach to music. Comprising some of Australia’s best string players, the Goldners are heard in major festivals across the country, and have a popular following overseas through regular appearances in the UK and a series of highly successful recordings with colleague Piers Lane on the Hyperion label.

CONCERT 1THURSDAY 20 APRIL 7:30PM

SCHMITT Légende, op 66 SCHUMANN Piano Quintet in E-flat major, op 44 BRITTEN String Quartet no 3, op 94 DVOŘÁK Piano Trio no 4 in E minor, op 90 ‘Dumky’

Featuring Amy Dickson, Lambert Orkis, Goldner String Quartet, Elias Quartet, Zukerman Trio

The Festival opens with the brilliant young Australian Amy Dickson playing a little-known gem by Frenchman Florent Schmitt, setting the scene for a Festival of musical discoveries. The Goldner String Quartet and the legendary Lambert Orkis show that familiar masterpieces will not be neglected either, with Schumann’s mighty quintet. Britten’s heartfelt third quartet comes to life with the acclaimed Elias Quartet from the UK; and the outstanding Zukerman Trio announce their presence with Dvořák’s divine ‘Dumky’ Trio, its galloping finale closing a magnificent concert.

CONCERT 2FRIDAY 21 APRIL, 7:30PM

FRANCK Sonata in A major for violin and piano KOPPEL Quintet for saxophone and string quartet PAUL DEAN Jasper and Charlie for Wind Quintet DVOŔĂK Piano Quintet no 2 in A major, op 81

Featuring Pinchas Zukerman, Angela Cheng, Amy Dickson, Goldner String Quartet, Arcadia Winds, Lambert Orkis, Elias Quartet

Franck’s tender wedding gift to his famous colleague Eugène Ysaÿe, the Violin Sonata in A major has never fallen from popularity. There can be few finer interpreters than Pinchas Zukerman, revered master of the lyrical, expressive style of playing that so perfectly suits this rhapsodic piece. Koppel’s Saxophone Quintet makes a vivid contrast, with its jazzy inflections and rhythmic verve. Clarinettist-composer Paul Dean (beloved mentor of Arcadia Winds) was inspired by the Australian novel Jasper Jones to create his characterful work. It’s followed by one of the most beloved piano quintets in the repertoire, in which Dvořák’s endless capacity for melody engages the heart from start to glowing finish.

CONCERT 3SATURDAY 22 APRIL, 2PM

MARTINŮ Trio for flute, cello and piano, H. 300 LIGETI Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet TANSMAN Sonatina for bassoon and piano BRITTEN Sinfonietta for chamber orchestra, op 1 FITKIN Gate for soprano saxophone and piano GLIÈRE Duos (1-7) op 39 for violin and cello WESTLAKE Rare Sugar

Featuring Arcadia Winds, Kees Boersma, Amy Dickson, Pinchas Zukerman, Amanda Forsyth, Goldner String Quartet

This concert is a banquet of musical colours and flavours, making full use of the joyous contrasts provided by all the different Festival wind players, grounded in piano and strings. Tansman and Martinů almost certainly crossed paths in the musically vibrant Paris of the early 20th century; Britten’s youthful Sinfonietta blends rhapsodic beauty with rhythmic invention. Ligeti’s Bagatelles show the composer at his most playful, making a happy contrast with Glière’s songful Duos. Works by Fitkin and Westlake make delightful companion pieces, their composers respected and popular members of today’s musical pantheon.

CONCERT 4SATURDAY 22 APRIL, 7:30PM

VASKS String Quartet no 3 BRAHMS Violin Sonata no 3 in D minor, op 108 BROADSTOCK My Feet Want to Dance but My Eyes Want to Sleep EDWARDS Bright Birds and Sorrows (World Premiere)*

Featuring Goldner String Quartet, Pinchas Zukerman, Angela Cheng, Kiran Phatak, Lloyd Van’t Hoff, Amy Dickson, Elias Quartet

Inspiration comes in many different guises, brought together for this unique program. Vasks’ affecting music is infused with the folk flavours of his native Latvia and tinged with local birdsong, amid traces of the struggle for national independence. Brahms wrote his third violin sonata as a virtuoso showcase for his dear colleague Joseph Joachim. Brenton Broadstock’s lyrical, haunting piece arises from one of his own poems of the same intriguing name: a song without words. Ross Edwards also plays with links between texts and notes in a multi-faceted, uplifting world premiere for the unusual combination of saxophone and string quartet.*Commissioned by Kim Williams AM

Featuring Rachel Shaw, Amy Dickson, Arcadia Winds, Lambert Orkis, Amanda Forsyth

This concert is a blissfully adventurous mix of musical styles. Young Australian Elizabeth Younan brings an edgy spark with her remarkable work for Arcadia Winds, while Queenslander Matthew Orlovich makes the most of the warm, rounded colours of saxophone and marimba. Straight from the French Jazz Age, Poulenc’s toe-tapping Sextet has a classical clarity that sits comfortably alongside Mozart’s mellow Horn Quintet and Beethoven’s gorgeous Cello Sonata.*Developed with assistance from Musica Viva’s Hildegard Project

CONCERT 6SUNDAY 23 APRIL, 4:30PM

DECRUCK Sonata in C-sharp major for alto saxophone and piano BEETHOVEN Piano Trio in B-flat major, op 97 ‘Archduke’ CRUMB A Little Suite for Christmas, A.D. 1979 JANKOWSKI String Octet (World Premiere)*

Featuring Amy Dickson, Zukerman Trio, Lambert Orkis, Goldner String Quartet, Elias Quartet

Fernande Decruck’s Sonata is the best-known of her many works for saxophone, its melodic inventiveness reflecting her Parisian studies as well as her years in America. It is one of three works in this concert which are completely new to Musica Viva’s stages, alongside George Crumb’s Little Suite (performed by his friend Lambert Orkis) and the world premiere of a string octet by young Adelaide composer and cellist, Jakub Jankowski. In the midst, like the chamber music monument it is, stands Beethoven’s glorious ‘Archduke’ Trio.*Commissioned with support from Australian Executor Trustees Community Program.
