Donations to the Mylapore TimesCharitable Trust helped to pay for theloads of notebooks and new schooluniforms which have been given freeto the poorest among students atSt. Lazarus Middle School inR A Puram.

At this school, which has beensupported by the Trust for over adecade families of many kids herecannot afford to spend on schooluniforms or extra notebooks and oftentend to drop out if support is notforthcoming.

Funds are also needed to keepclasses at the Compuer Lab going.

This Lab fitted with a dozencomputers, also donated bywell wishers provides senior studentswill basic computer skills. Moststudents are from economically poorfamilies.

Funds are also required to provide20 long tables and benches to replacedamaged ones.

In late July, the Trust receiveddonation of Rs.500 from V. Shankar,Mudichur and Rs. 1000 fromR. Rangachari from R. A. Puram.

At the Jumma Mosque on KutcheryRoad in Mylapore a big community ofMuslims gathers every evening for Ramzanprayers.

To serve the faithful who break the fastthe kanji is cooked every day on thepremises. A team of five takes care of thecooking, which starts at about 11.30 a.m.and ends at about 3 p.m. It is then served tothe faithful at about 6 p.m.

Abdul Rahman who manages work heresays that the 27th day of Ramzan isimportant. The day marks the end of thereading of the holy Koran. The prayers getover late at night and dinner is served.

A steady stream of people continue to head tothe Aadhaar Camp at the Raja Muthiah BoysSchool in R. A. Puram to get the biometrics processdone.

This past week, many people seem to have gotthe Know Your Resident (KYR) forms that arecirculated in colonies. Many people armed withfilled KYR forms were seen in the queues at theschool campus. Others brought their census slipsalong.

There seems to be some order now in the crowdmanagement at the counters.

The staff collect all the Census slips or KYRforms of the people they feel they can process forthe day and inform others to either stay on andbide their time or come another day.

But many people have begun to form the queuefrom 7 a.m.

Last weekend, some women who lined up hereon Saturday were annoyed that the staff hadalready limited the numbers to process and askedthe rest to come back again.

Weekends see a bigger turnout at the counters.Hence, the process here will continue till late

August.Those who get the printouts after the process

are asked to verify the forms to ensure all dataposted is correct.

ICICI BANK BRANCHESOPEN COUNTERSFOR AADHAAR CARD


ICICI Bank branches in Alwarpet ( C PRamaswamy Road) and in Mylapore ( E Mada St -N Mada St junction) have begun to offer thebiometrics process for the Aadhaar Card as a publicservice camp. (photo on left)

Bank officers said the camp began on Thursday.“We have begun this as a service with the okay

from Chennai Corporation,” said Gopalan DilipRam, a manager based at the Alwarpet branch.

While those people who live in Division 142 ( old)can go to the Alwarpet branch, those under Division146 old can head to the Mylapore branch.

Both places have created some space in theirpremises and allowed a counter and staff to operatethe biometrics process.

As word went around the area, more people cameby to get the job done.

Ram said that the counters will be open from10am to 5 pm, all days of the week and that theyfollow the same system that is followed at the othercentres.

People though must ensure that they reside inthe division that the bank’s centre covers. Otherscannot be entertained here.

He was associated with Mumbai-basedShanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha in the 40sand to the 70s and edited their journal,Shanmukha. He was an art critic of the ‘IndianExpress’ and the author of a book tiled ‘Musings onMusic and Musicians’.

In the old school mould, KSM kept a low profileand his reviews were often positive andencouraging, for that was how he saw his work.

EATING OUT / CHECK THIS

How many of us would have walked down by the sideof an old bridge in our area and taken a close look at the architecture that is best seen from the other side?

My friend Hemachandra Rao, a civil engineer and heritageenthusiast has spent the past two years taking a close look atbridges of our city built over a hundred years ago and stillin service.

He has stopped at Chintadripet, Central Station and BasinBridge among many other places, walked into slush and doubledacross garbage piles to document what appears to be his currentfascination.

Of late, Rao has been spending time at the Tamil Nadu StateArchives in Egmore, digging into what were called PC or PublicConsultation files trying to get to the very foundation of all the oldbridges that the British built for Madras.

So when we made a trip to some parts of north Madrasrecently, Rao asked us to slow down at a few places to show mewhat he had discovered on his earlier journeys, including an oldquay off the Canal near Basin Bridge and some massive, decayinggodowns in the same vicinity.

With a man like Rao beside you, you begin to learn more aboutyour city.

One destination on that trip was Erukkenchery, a 15-minutedrive from Basin Bridge on a day when the roads seemed tobe empty.

We headed to St. Joseph’s School located in a large plot of landbounded by small and tightly-knit colonies with roads that weremore lanes.

We were here to explore ways in which a few communitiescould get involved in the Madras Week celebrations( www.themadrasday.in).

Now, Rao and his friends who collect all kinds of things -postage stamps, first-day covers, city magazines in Tamil andEnglish, maps and drawings and gas lights and army badges - arealways willing to roll out an exhibition if they find a bright spaceand warm hosts.

The past few years, the Rao team has taken its show to a fewschools in this part of the city.

That evening, we asked school principal Father Anthony howhis team of senior teachers could supplement a possible exhibition.

Could we start putting together stuff that told us a bit aboutErukkenchery?

Two teachers piped up. One had lived in the area for about 25years and the other was a third generation daughter of this soil.

In minutes we were lending our ears to the snippets of localhistory, geography and social life.

O yes, we had a project that could make a nice start.We now hope the teachers and student teams will develop

some form of record of this area, once a village that had its placein old city records.

It was a trip well taken.

Both feasts start onAugust 6 with the flaghoisting and Holy Mass.

Archbishop Dr GeorgeAntonyswamy willparticipate in this function atthe Luz church.

Here, the religiousservices will run up to August 15. That evening there willbe a special Mass followed by a short car procession.

At the Our Lady of Guidance Church, the services willgo on till August 18. That Sunday morning, the archbishopwill lead Holy Mass and distribute Holy Communion tothe children who will receive it for the first time.Confirmation service is also to be held here that morning.

Chennai Runners is presenting the ‘Run for yourNeighbourhood’ challenge leading up to Chennai’s flagshiprunning event, The Wipro Chennai Marathon on Dec 1, 2013.

The group is inviting first time runners fromneighbourhoods acrossChennai to train withprofessional runners for a 10km run on Dec 1, 2013.

Selected entrants will beput through a special 12-week training program byexperienced marathonrunners to get in shape forthe run.

Training runs will happena few times a week atconvenient locations in theMylapore neighborhood,starting Sep 1.

Core runner Ashwin says,“We are looking for aspiringrunners from all walks of life - students, housewives, seniorcitizens and professionals are all welcome to apply.”

Residents complain aboutpollution caused bypromoter of apartments

I am writing to you on behalf of theresidents of Muktha Apartments, at Plot No.212/213A, St Mary’s Road, Mandaveli,Chennai - 600028. ( near the previous MukthaMarriage Hall on St Mary’s Road).

Our apartment is located in the laneadjacent to the hall.

Our apartment is on the northern side ofLand Marvel’s project ‘Thyme’ on St Mary’sRoad, Mandaveli. As Land Marvel haschosen not to put up a scaffolding and createsome protective cover to prevent dust frompolluting our flats and the rest, we are forcednow to live with presence of high particulatematter present in the suspended air comprisingof fine cement particles.

These particles get deposited in ourhouses. There are lots of children in ourapartment and we are concerned about theirhealth as the surrounding airquality is very poor.

There is permanent waterstagnation in the construction sitewhich provides breeding groundfor mosquitoes.

As they use readymixconcrete for the roofing, theconcrete mixer vehicles andpumping machines deployed atthe site causes immense noise.

Our repeated pleas to the siteengineer for the last two monthshave gone unheeded. We hopeLand Marvel responds at leastnow.

I refer to the report in Mylapore Timesdated July 27 on the ‘death’ of a rain tree inAlwarpet.

Now, how can we prevent such acts againsttrees in private lands?
