Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a won-
derful Christmas. It is always
great to share our love and
have a special time with peo-
ple we care. I wish all of you
to have a lot more of love fill
your heart and your family
throughout the year of 2014.
With pleasant holiday seasons behind us, we
need to get on with our students’ CM business
which is less than two months away. The first
thing is entering the CM repertoire into the
database. Our branch’s database will be
opened until January 15. Please double
check the syllabus requirements to avoid an
Ineligible for Certificate. And mark your cal-
endar for the CM mandatory meeting on Feb-
ruary 10. If you have any questions as you
input the information, do not hesitate to ask
Nancy Lim or Masako Okamura-Klassen our
Co-Chairs.
We had great events since our November
newsletter was issued. The lecture by Neil
Galanter was given right after our November
meeting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints. Mr. Galanter presented overview
characteristics of Spanish music and also de-
tailed styles of representative composers.
Also the list of important repertoires was help-
ful to teachers who attended.
The Christmas luncheon at the Ranch House in
Diamond Bar, which was organized by Nancy
Lim, was fun and relaxing. It was a good time
for me to share the laughter with daily life
stories with colleagues and to know some of
our new teachers personally. If you missed
this time, please plan to attend another lunch-
eon at the end of the year in June, especially
our new members.
Our Winterfest was held on November 23rd at
Mt. SAC, chaired by Brook Peterson. Thanks
to Brook and all the teachers who helped for
the event to be successful. Every event is only
possible with your help and I really appreci-
ate all our members for their volunteer works.
Another successful event was our Community
Outreach Recital at Oakmont of Chino Hills. It
was great to see many residents came out to
enjoy our students’ performances. Also thank
our MSSL students who prepared the event
from making program to serving refreshes to
residents on that day.
This wonderful sharing music program is solely
run by MSSL, which they raise fund from sell-
ing goodies at our event venues. They also
contribute to our branch for the scholarship
fund as well. So I kindly ask you to help them
by spreading the words to parents about the
purpose of their fundraising and their support.
Please be advised the details of all the up-
coming events in this newsletter and do follow
the guidelines for each event. Also always be
alert and read carefully of emails sent by
Chairs which will help you and Chairs to make
the program smoother. Lastly, I would like to
invite you to our next general meeting, which
is on January 6th at 10:30 am at Diamond
Bar Center. Please come and join us to be
informed of our events and also to share any
of your insights! Once again, a happy new
year to you all and hope to see you at the
meeting!
Sincerely,
Hester Kim

On December 7, 2013 we had another beautiful Community Outreach event presented by the music student
service league at the Oakmont of chino Hills. Once again the facility was decorated incredibly for the holi-
days making a very warm, family atmosphere for our 25 participants, their families and the 12 teachers. The
guests enjoyed three well-prepared recitals with music that was very appropriate for the season. I was so
proud of our music students and how accomplished they are! The “Music Student Service league” committee
provided delicious refreshments—holiday punch, cake, and snacks...a good time was had by all!
Our next Community Outreach event will be February 1, 2014 at the same location. The theme for the music
will be “Romantic Works.” Please consider registering your older students for this free recital. The partici-
pants will receive community service hours for their school record. Please watch for our sales at the general
recital, VOCE and certificate of merit. In addition to selling refreshments, we will also have a donation jar for
our “Senior Scholarship Fund” for those families that don’t desire to purchase a refreshment.
-Margy Hymel
There are several events coming up in the next few months. Please contact Anna Ryu to
participate in the General Recital on January 18, 2014.
We will also have the Community Outreach Recital on February 1, 2014, and Margy
Hymel is the chair for this event.
VOCE will be the following day, on February 2, 2013. Please contact Ying Li to partici-
pate.
There will be another General/Theme recital on February 8, 2014. This is a great oppor-
tunity for your students to perform their repertoire for CM before their evaluation. The
chair for this event is Jennifer Lin.
CM is early this year; February 22-23. Please remember to input your students repertoire
by January 15th!

CM REPORT (January 2014)
by Nancy Lim & Masako Okamura-Klassen, CM Co-Chairs
Upon the start of the New Year, we will start another important process of the CM 2014 Online Registration—entering stu-dents’ repertoire and evaluation report info. Teachers need to be extra careful when entering their students’ CM information online. It is extremely important that the repertoire and technical exercises match the exact syllabus requirements of the students’ CM level. Any errors found on students’ evaluation forms may result in an “Ineligible for Certificate” rating, which makes students ineligible for Branch Honors and/or Convention.
The online database is open from January 2nd-January 15th. Please first read the attached 2013-14
CM Instructions for Entering Evaluation Information Online. (Please disregard #8 on the instruction.)
CM Database Entry #2 (1) Online Form Entry. CM Teachers must enter Student, Repertoire, Branch Honors, Convention, and Ensemble infor-mation into the CM Evaluation Information Form provided online at www.mtac.org/login (Teacher Home Page) > CM Stu-dents > CM Student Evaluation Info. (2) Repertoire Requirements. Please double-check that all Repertoire requirements are met by reviewing the CM Policies & Procedures, Section 6.3. Per recommendation at training, CM Branch Chairs should create a committee to assist with this task. (3) Common Data Input Issues. Below please find a list of common data input issues that appear on Evaluator Information forms: • Composer Name. Composer’s first name and last name should be included on the Form. • Title. Title should include key signature and catalogue, e.g. BWV, Op., K., L., Hob. • Movement. Movement should indicate Tempo. e.g. “Allegro” and not “First Movement”. • Syllabus Citation. Required Syllabus Piece must be as listed in the Syllabus and include the page number. • Chronological or Performance Order. Repertoire should be entered either chronologically or according to the order of performance. • Ensemble Scheduling; Carpool. Teachers must contact the Branch Chair if students are performing in ensembles, so that arrangements may be made for crucial logistical planning, such as scheduling and arranging for multiple pianos. If stu-dents are applying for Convention, Teachers will mark “Duet” or “2 to 5 Pianos” on the Evaluation Information online form, and enter the names of the Ensemble members so that they will be scheduled simultaneously. If students are not applying for Convention, Teachers will enter the Ensemble students as “Carpool,” and the students will then be scheduled sequentially. • Branch Honors & Convention Recitals Eligibility. Eligibility requirements for Branch Honors and Convention Recitals must be carefully checked.
Before you input any information, be aware of the following:
Carefully select your students’ repertoire to match their assigned CM level
Teachers must be sure to use the most current version of syllabus (esp. Keyboard/Strings—2012 Edition). Update and review all addendums (available on MTAC CM Website>document).
Assign an appropriate Syllabus piece listed on the correct page of the chosen level (for each of your students).
Students must meet all technical & sight-reading requirements per level
Page 6 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
For Panel teachers: the deadline to enter Panel students’ repertoire info is January 15th.
DO NOT input any AM/PM or DAY 1/DAY 2 requests on the option feature of your student’s online form. These sections must
remain blank. All such requests will be erased from the student’s form.
Carpool option features are to be used for siblings and accompanists only. (Please follow the directions as indicated on the “Instructions for entering Online Evaluation Information, #9” attached to this newsletter.)
Determine whether your students are eligible to enroll in Branch honors (Level 5 or above) or Convention. (Please read the Guidelines.)
If applying for Convention, decide on the type of Recital (including the actual piece to be performed) and input the exact timing of the piece(s). Be aware of specific time limits per recital.
Please take time to review the “CM Policy and Procedures (pages 7-8, Section 6 CM Evaluations)” and the “CM 2014 Instruc-tions for Entering Online Evaluation Information,” even if you are a returning CM teacher. There are also important and useful infor-mation of repertoire rules on section 6.3. through 6.3.6. The Teacher’s Education slideshow presentation and the State CM News-letter (December) also contain more helpful information and guidelines to successfully complete this enrollment process.
CM 2014 EVALUATIONS
Here are the assigned CM 2014 Evaluation dates per discipline:
Keyboard Saturday, 02/22/14 AND Sunday, 02/23/14 (All Day)
Strings Sunday, 02/23/14 (All Day)
Winds Saturday, 02/22, 2014 (All Day)
Voice Sunday, 02/23/14 (AM)
Specific evaluation times will be announced 2 weeks prior to the CM.
MULTI-INSTRUMENT CM EVALUATIONS
If your student is enrolled in CM with multiple instruments (e.g., Piano & Violin), please inform Nancy via email so she can schedule all of his or her evaluations on the same day. If your student prefers to have his or her evaluations on separate days, please let me know as well.
PANEL TEACHERS
You will soon receive important info regarding Panel evaluation dates via email. Please look for the exact dates and location of your student’s Panel evaluation on this notice; they will NOT be held at our Branch’s CM (Cal Poly). Our branch Panel Audition is sched-uled with other branches on 02/22/14 at Azusa Pacific University. You must also indicate on your student’s Evaluation report form which day (DAY 1, DAY 2, etc.) our Branch is assigned to in order to properly schedule your Panel student’s evaluation at that particu-lar venue and date. For those Panel students who are not exempt from Theory, they must still complete their Theory test at Cal Poly during our Branch’s regularly scheduled CM dates (either 2/22 or 2/23). Please email Nancy which day they prefer to take their theo-ry test so she can inform the Registration chair.
**IMPORTANT**: Please submit a self-addressed stamped envelope to the CM Chair Masako Okamura-Klassen to receive your Panel students’ evaluation forms after CM.
CM SCHEDULING
Scheduling for student evaluations will be finalized and emailed to teachers 2 weeks prior to the CM weekend. If there are any scheduling conflicts due to religious or school-related issues, a written request must be submitted no later than January 15th. Please email all Student scheduling requests to Nancy at [email protected]. All requests are not necessarily guaranteed, and will be determined by the CM chair on an individual case-by-case basis. You may be asked to provide proof (e.g., written verification) of your student’s scheduling conflict.
Page 7 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
TEACHER WORK ASSIGNMENTS AND SCHEDULE
Your Teacher Work assignment and Schedule will be emailed to you before the CM Meeting in February. If there are any scheduling conflicts due to work or other valid reasons (as determined by the CM Chairs), please email these special requests no later than Jan-uary 15th. All Teacher work assignments or scheduling requests should be done on our website [www.mtacdiamondbar.org>State Programs>CM>Teacher Work> Teacher Work Assignments’ Date/Time Special Request Form] or emailed to Masako ([email protected]). As noted above, all requests are not automatically granted, as they will be determined on an individual case-by-case basis. You may be asked to provide proof (e.g., written verification) of your scheduling conflict. Please be aware that fines may be imposed for not fulfilling your work requirements as indicated on the Branch Teacher Contract (See below for info).
REVISED CM FINES & FEES
Please read the attached list of 2014 DB Branch CM Reschedules & MUP Fees and CM 2014 Teacher Work Day Requirements (Shift Hours), (i.e., Fees for Rescheduling; MUP’s; Unfulfilled Teacher Work Requirements, and etc.). If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Masako.
CM MEETINGS (GENERAL & COMMITTEE)
Please make plans to attend our upcoming General Meeting on January 6th at 10:30 AM where more CM instruction and announce-
ments will be made. The CM Committee will also meet on Saturday, February 1st at 5:30 PM (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints, 3332 Eucalyptus Ave, Chino Hills) to discuss important tasks per CM department in preparation for CM
day.
It’s hard to believe that CM will be held in 2 months! Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support as we rapidly approach our CM date. Please check your e-mail for any possible CM announcements, updates, and CM tips-of-the-week sent by the CM Council. As always, if there are any questions or concerns in regards to this enrollment process, please email Nancy or Masako. See you all at our next meeting!
Six Reasons for Automatic Remain at Level (RAL)
A student receiving an RAL must repeat the same level (both Theory & Performance) in order to progress to a higher CM Level on their next CM Evaluation. Any year which a student receives an RAL rating will not be included as a participa-tion year for the Senior Medallion or Panel Audition Eligibility.
RAL IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS CLEARLY NOT PREPARED FOR THE
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OR AUTOMATIC RAL SITUATIONS
Students shall receive an Automatic Remain at Level for any one of
the following (CM Policy & Procedures 2013-2014):
1) Repertoire: Advanced (Level 10) required Etude not memorized.
2) Sight Reading: Refuses to Attempt (legally blind students exempt).
2) Technique: None prepared or cannot play without notation.
(Strings Etude excepted.)
4) Memory Requirement from Syllabus not met.
5) Number of Pieces: The number of pieces required is not correct.
6) Photocopy Restrictions: A student so brings photocopied music into
evaluation room or brings music reproduced from a CD or the Internet without a logo or the source (URL)/Student will not be heard by Evaluator and will automatically receive an RAL.
(Exception: to facilitate page turns. The original score must be present.)
Students who receive a Fail grade (less than 70%) on written Theory Exam will receive a Remain at Level rating.
Page 8 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
Four Reasons for Ineligible for Certificate (IC)
The “Ineligible for Certificate” rating shall be used for students who perform
a proficient CM Performance Evaluation, but who have violated rules and
regulations not related to performance quality.
Students who receive an IC rating will not receive a CM Certificate for the CM year in which the IC was given. However, they are permitted to move to a higher CM Level at their next Performance Evaluation. It will disqualify a student from Branch Honors, Convention Recitals, and Panel Convention Performances. It will not affect future Sen-ior Award or Panel eligibility.
Students shall receive an IC rating for any one of the following (CM Policies & Procedures 2013-2014):
1) Performing incorrect repertoire categories, Syllabus piece, or not having a required Syllabus piece
2) Performing technique from an incorrect Syllabus or level
3) Advanced Level required Etude not from the Etude list in Piano Syllabus.
4) Performing any Unacceptable Repertoire
Five Reasons for No Branch Honors/No Convention
Students shall receive an “Ineligible for Branch Honors or Convention Recitals” for the following (CM Policies
& Procedures 2012-2013, pg.13):
Performance did not meet the required Evaluator ratings and/or theory score
An RAL or IC was issued
Original music scores were not provided to the Evaluator, including a second original score even if the piece was memorized (and a third original score if a live accompanist performs)
Repertoire performed was not listed in the Evaluation Report Form
English translation of the Title and Composer for music published in a foreign language was not provided.
For Strings, Winds, and Voice Branch Evaluations, any pieces being considered for Branch Honors or Con-
vention programs must be accompanied by a live accompanist for all CM Levels.
Additional Branch Eligibility Requirements for Branch Honors & Convention:
Students must be Level 5-Advanced (for Branch Honors applicants only)
Sight Reading and Technique must be rated “Good or Excellent”
Repertoire must be rated “Good or Excellent”
All pieces MUST be memorized
(NOTE: Memory is optional for Woodwinds & Ensembles. For Strings: Classical Period Sonatas are ex-empt from memory requirement. )
