FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Kia ora koutou, Surveys You will have received an email last weekend with a link to a whanau survey. This is part of our school inquiry into the perceptions of our three most important stakeholders: children, families and teachers. We very much appreciate you taking the time to fill in the survey. The information we gain from the responses will help us to plan our strategic direction and will give valuable feedback for our staff as a whole. All families who complete the survey can sign the slip brought home by your children and return it to the school office. We will pull out a name to win a $100 Bayfair voucher on Monday of next week. Thank you for taking the time to voice your thoughts. :-) PB4L and Restorative Practices At Mount Maunganui Intermediate School we have trained our staff and support staff in Positive Behaviour for Learning and Restorative Practices. The Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide framework helps us to continuously work on and build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. PB4L is not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices you put in place to support students to make positive behaviour choices. The framework is based on international evidence. As part PB4L, we collect and analyse student behaviour data. We use this data to identify which positive behaviours we need to teach, which students we need to work with more closely with and which times or places behaviour may be becoming a concern. This is the PB4L triangle. The triangle on the left is the expected number of discipline referrals in a well-functioning school. Typically 85% of students are in the green, as in 0-1 behaviour referrals. Based on our analysis in term two we had 98% of our students in the green zone (with only 0-1 behaviour referrals). This is outstanding. We are really proud of this result. Students, teachers and staff are working really hard to live our coastal values - respect-whakaute, pride-whakahii and learner-akonga. This is great work team.

We encourage all of our learners to be respectful to one another through words and actions.

Safe Biking We have had some communication from concerned members of our community about the way in which some of our students are riding their bikes to and from school. Whilst the majority ride safely and sensibly, a few are making poor decisions and putting themselves and motorists at risk. Please speak to your child about wearing helmets, keeping two wheels on the ground (no wheelies), looking carefully before entering intersections and avoiding the bus lane. The last thing we want is for one of our students to be hurt or killed. We appreciate your support with this matter. Have a great week. Mā te wa Whaea Lisa Principal

SPECIALIST SUBJECTS Specialist subjects are loved by all the students and this gives them an opportunity to experience a range of Technologies and the Arts. Currently we are undergoing refurbishment of the Dance / Drama and the Foods rooms and then we will be moving onto the Music and Hard Materials rooms. As you can appreciate, this does cause some disruption to the previous programmes and we are accommodating accordingly. Dance/ Drama is now mobile and these classes are delivered within the various teams. We are very pleased to now have a new food technology teacher who has started with us this term, Mrs Deb Barr. She is temporarily located in the old Kiwi Can room, on the edge of the field. It’s exciting times ahead with our refurbishment, thus allowing Deb to create an alternative and more feasible programme in her temporary room. She will be focusing on broader themes within the technology curriculum, including practical experimentation and sensory evaluation of food products.

ICAS TESTING 2019

These are tests sat by thousands of students throughout New Zealand, Australia and other Pacific Areas and administered out of Australia. All students in our school may enter any of the exams. A gentle reminder, the students in the Accelerate classes are expected to sit the English, Mathematics and Science papers. Other papers are optional. As advised in an earlier newsletter, the ICAS assessments are to be completed online, this year. Global Assessments, who manage these tests, have informed us that we have a 3 day window to do the testing, but year 7 candidates need to complete on the same day, year 8 candidates also. The sitting date windows are as below. We will determine exact dates once registrations are received and we have awareness of how many devices are required for each assessment.

SUBJECT SITTING DATE WINDOW Digital Technologies Mon 2nd to Wed 4th September Science Wed 4th to Fri 6th September Writing Mon 9th to Wed 11th September Spelling Wed 11th to Fri 13th September English Mon 16th to Wed 18th September Mathematics Wed 18th to Fri 20th September

!!!! PLEASE NOTE - ICAS TESTING AND AIMS GAMES CLASH !!!! ICAS writing and spelling assessments are scheduled for the week of AIMS games – 9-13 September. With ICAS’s shortened testing schedule this year, and change of format for testing, any student involved in an MMI AIMS team will NOT be able to register for these tests, this year. Below is the link for the google form to register for ICAS testing for 2019. The subject list, costs and payment information is on the form. Please pay at the office direct or online. You cannot pay using this registration link.

The cut-off date for registration and payment is 12pm, Friday 16th August https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1KcklXhHIXoNf63_4nKo0XzKwfMR1PzEvQkIpV2Z_enw/edit?ts=5cf879e9 Please note that all testing will be online, rather than by paper, for this year. TAI MITCHELL SUCCESSES Tauranga East came 4th behind Rangataiki, with Tauranga West beating Te Puke, in the final. Marley Igasan was the only Tauranga East player named in this year’s tournament team and was also asked to trial and made the Roller Mills team, for this season. Liam Preston was also asked to trial for Roller Mills, after having a great tournament, but unfortunately missed out on selection. Vinnie Baggott and Harlym McCabe were both invited to trial and made the BOP Wasps, which is for Year 7 students. They look promising for Roller Mills in 2020. Included are a couple of photos. One of Tauranga East team with the 4th place cup and the other with Marley and the tournament team. We are extremely proud of these players and wish them well. 2019 SUPER 11 BASKETBALL The MMI girls and boys A teams entered this event. It was a tough competition with some very tall timber from Rotorua and Gisborne. The girls won 2 games and lost 3. The boys won 3 games and lost 2. Girls - Unfortunately Gisborne and Rotorua were both in the girls’ pool. The girls played well, only losing by 9 points to Rotorua - the eventual winners, but were outsized by these teams. The development players had some well-deserved minutes and did a fantastic job winning their final crossover match. Boys - The boys managed to come back from a pool play loss by knocking out Tauranga Intermediate School, in a spectacular semi-final. Unfortunately, after this match there wasn’t enough gas in the tank to defeat Gisborne, in a very close final. They were crowned the 2019 SUPER 11 BASKETBALL RUNNERS UP! The boys had also won the Western Bay Basketball World Cup, at the end of term 2, beating Tauranga Intermediate School, by 1 point!! A big thank you to Willow, Anouska, Suzanne and Mr Turol for their time coaching and managing the teams. Pictured below are your MMI 2019 Super 11 Basketball Representatives:

Preventing Measles at the Anchor AIMS Games: Advice from the Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health (letter attached)

There is a measles outbreak affecting several areas of New Zealand with more than 280 confirmed cases reported so far this year. The upcoming Anchor AIMS Games in Tauranga will be bringing many people together from around the country and from overseas, and so it is important that you are aware of what to do to reduce the risk of getting measles and of spreading measles.
