FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Kia ora koutou, Open Evening Next Wednesday, 21st August, we will be hosting our annual information evening. Please encourage all prospective parents of year 6 students to attend. Even if you know a lot about MMI already, attending the open evening is an important part of beginning the transition process together. It enables you to talk with your child about intermediate, changing schools and all that we have to offer. All families in zone and out of zone are welcome to attend. Although, spaces are limited in 2020, we may be able to take a small number of out of zone students. The information evening begins promptly at 6.30pm, however classrooms and the specialist classrooms will be open for viewing from 6.00pm. There will also be entertainment in the school hall. The information evening will last approximately one hour, followed a quick cup of tea. Our student leaders, kapa haka and performance groups will also attend. Accelerate Class Information If your child is a very capable learner and has been recommended by their class teacher as a candidate for the accelerate class, there is an information session being held prior to the information evening. Your year 6 child should be working above level 3 in the New Zealand Curriculum. Tauranga Council Elections Yesterday, on our Facebook page, I posted the election information of two local candidates who were running for the Tauranga City Council. There was no intention on my part to champion particular candidates and certainly there was no political motivation. The posts simply acknowledged two of our school mums who are running for local council. I apologise if this offended anyone. I have since discovered that we actually have three of our mums who are running. All the best to Dawn Kiddie, Heidi Hughes and Deborah Johnstone for your campaigns and of course to anyone else from our community who may be seeking election. Have a wonderful week. Good luck to our science and technology students who compete in Rotorua on Thursday and Friday and to our Water Polo Open Team who compete at Winterfest over the weekend. Ma te wa Whaea Lisa Tumuaki

HOMESTAYS NEEDED

Thank you so much for the 5 families who have come forward to homestay for the group

arriving from Japan on 13th October to 30th October.

We still require 15 more families to host. Families are paid $50.00 per night to assist with

expenses and will also need to be police vetted (we will do that here at MMI).

It would be amazing if we could get this sorted as soon as we can and if you can assist us

please contact Jane Howard direct:

[email protected]

Thank you so much to our fantastic host families. Without you, these students could not enjoy

the experience of Mt Maunganui and New Zealand.

Kia ora Whānau. In Whānau

23 we have started our inquiry

into 'How advertising

influences what we think and

the choices we make'.

As a part of the inquiry

students will be designing and

then advertising a product they

create for their target group

which is 3-5yo children.

We were lucky enough to be

able to spend a half-day at BestStart on Girven Rd, something we all really enjoyed and which

will help us better understand who we are making a product for. It was an awesome day! A

huge thanks to Jade's mum, Amanda, for making this trip possible, he whetu koe!

In other news, we (Whānau 22 and 23) had a training session with some NZ Sevens players.

This has definitely helped us in our Inter-class Arunga touch competition!

Thanks to Mrs Thurston for organising this excellent (if extremely tiring) experience for our

classes!

We entered 7 solos from MMI into the comp - Sienna Lagerberg, Poppy Francis, Milla Horton, Tia Wilkie, Lily Flevill, Gabrielle Annear and Taryn Wilson. All 7 of our dancers danced beautifully and from the heart. They put their all out on the stage and should be very proud of themselves. I am very proud of them. Our results from our 7 soloists were: *Sienna Lagerberg was awarded Y7 Solo 1st place Champion *Tia Wilkie was awarded Y8 1st runner up *Gabrielle Annear awarded Y8 2nd runner up Everyone showed beautiful sportsmanship and supported each other with grace. SOUTH ISLAND INDOOR BOWLS VISIT On Wednesday, 7th August, we had 26 South Island representative bowlers come to visit MMI. They were welcomed with a powhiri and some morning tea and then they joined in with our tamariki. The children were paired up to have a game with an expert, all the while getting bowling tips and tricks. The students were then challenged to land a bowl on a small piece of paper and try their hand at bowling with part of their view blocked. The morning was loads of fun and the students at MMI had a great time. Thanks so much to Alison Cowan for organising the visit. Here are some pictures of the event.
