The festival will start with the pandakal on Mar 17 andwill end with a veedhi perapadu on Mar 27.

DMK chooses sittingMP to contest fromChennai South

The DMK has chosen T. K. S.Elangovan (photo on right) to be itscandidate for Chennai South in theLok Sabha poll to be held in April 24in this state.

Elangovan is the sitting Memberof Parliament of the DMK represent-ing Chennai North. He has been aprominent spokesperson of the partyin Delhi and in the city and oftenappears on TV channels, voicing his partys stand onvarious issues.

The man from DMK who once represented this con-stituency and was also a union minister, T. R. Baalu is nowthe partys candidate in Thanjavur.

This weekend, the BJP is to name its candidates forTamil Nadu and its senior member, L. Ganesan is expectedto run in Chennai South.

Having named its candidates early, the AIADMKslocal units have had time to rustle up theirneighbourhood campaign and put it on the road.

Dr Jayavardan has started to campaign in the farend of this constituency, as far as Virugambakkam inthe west while the DMK candidate, Elangovan haschosen to start where the turf is firmer - in Saidapet,where he has former city Mayor, M. Subramaniam athis side.

Meanwhile, the civic body has completed wipingclean all the political graffiti on walls and removingbanners of parties that hung around after recentevents.

At the Amma Unavagams and Amma Water Stalls,while the word Amma remains following the ElectionCommissions nod, the image of Jayalalithaa has beenblanked out with paper sheets.

The Mylapore MLAs office made sure that theimages were blocked temporarily on the large boards atthe gate to her office on C. P. Ramaswamy Roadin Alwarpet.

Mylapore Times launched a web site for the 2011 LokSabha poll. It did not live beyond the honeymoon period of thethen elected MP.

l EATING OUT

Last Sunday evening, a bunch of people -theatrepersons, dancers, lawyers and those who pursueone form of artistic pursuit or the other gathered on aterrace of a house in Karpagam Avenue inRaja Annamalaipuram.

They were here at the invitation of Evam, a theatrecompany promoted by Sunil Vishnu and Karthik Kumar.Evam has given theatre and entertainment a professionaltouch and changed the way theatre has been presentedin the city.

Its recent production, Ali J featuring one actor, Karthikhas been taken off the programmed performance schedules inMumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru because fringe rightwinggroups have raised all kinds of objections - saying it glorifiedJinnah and the Muslims and mocks at Indias freedom.

City-based Shekinah Jacob has written this play thatseems to look at what it is to be a Muslim today and sheborrows from milestones and developments in pre- and post-Independent India to create the sub-texts in the play.

Ali J received some good reviews and appreciation fromthe critics when it was staged at the Edinburgh Festival in UKand it got a strong house when it was first staged atBengalurus Ranga Shankara.

Subsequently though, the fringe groups have seen to itthat the play never got performed. Their tactic was simple anddirect - inform the local police that the play was controversialby citing odd references and hinting at inflammed protests atthe theatre venues if the play was staged.

The play was to have two shows at the Alliance Francaiseauditorium last Sunday, with shows booked up but on themorning of the show, the Police Commissioners Officeadvised the group not to stage it.

So the Evam group held a meet that evening to screenvideo portions of the play which the fringe groups claim to beinflammatory and to discuss with those present issues thatconfront creative people when their works are either targeted,curbed or nullified.

On the one side, creative works are being assessed bypeople who have no clue about arts or literature or of therights of expression. Also the men in khaki seem to leantowards loud fringe groups than be fair to writers, artists andtheatrepeople.

Unfortunately, the community does not rise when suchblatant violations take place in our midst. Artistes themselvesare slow to react and bond in solidarity when they arethreatened or gagged. Intellectuals and social activists seemto sit back. And if civil society reacts, it talks about the issueand goes back home or to work.

Who then will fight for creative rights?

So who makesthese artistic jadais?

Enquiries revealthat each jadai of theartistic kind is adonation by a devotee.The donor familyinforms the templeoffice, gets the jadaidesigned and hands itover to the templefor use.

Last Mondayevening, the goddesswore the naga jadai.On another morning,the peacock jadai borea series of feathers ofthe bird.

On days when thereare no donors, volun-teers use fresh flowersin place of the jadai.

Clearly, there areartistic expressionsalso on display at thisPanguni festival.

Gas cylinders lorries pose danger,hamper MTC mini bus movement

We are from the residents association of ThiruveedhiammalKoil Street (TAKSRA) R K Nagar.

It was a pleasant surprise to find MTC Mini Bus plyingthrough our road. Many of our residents took a ride and foundit convenient and comfortable. With inner roads like oursgetting connected our street residents are happy to use thisservice (as against private vehicles) and contribute our little toreduce global warming.

Now that the inner roads are getting connected perhapsagencies like Police and Chennai Corporation should look intothe hindrances along these roads that hamper smoothmovement of the mini bus.

In our street, parking of vehicles is common, particularlyvehicles of Super Gas ; their trucks loaded with gas cylindersare always parked at the T junction of our road(Thiruveedhiamman Koil Street) with Sringeri Mutt Road. TheChennai School is located at this junction and therefore it is allthe more sensitive an issue to address.

Our association and the HM from The Chennai Schoolhave appealed /registered complaints to the AbiramapuramPolice Station on the gas cylinder lorries parking issue but weare yet to see action on the ground.

BSNL does not takecomplaint seriously

The photo below showsthe poorly maintained BSNLjunction boxes at our build-ing premises in Greencourt,Visweswarapuram,Mylapore. I have complainedmany time to Mylapore DEand he has not cared toattend or rectify it.

Also, the broadbandnetwork connection discon-nects every 3 minutesautomatically. BSNL staff arenegligent and indifferent tothis problem but want ourmonthly bills to be paid ontime.

We hope this letter willwake up the BSNL team.

Transgenders pose problemsWe face many problems from transgenders. They come in a

group, surround a person and demand money. Sometimes theytake away money from your purse. The problem is severe atfestival time; they threaten peole if money is not given.

Hawkers and shopkeepers of Mylapore are also targeted.Something must be done.

MTC Mini Bus: suggestionsThanks for the detailed report published in Mylapore Times on

the MTC mini-bus plying from Mandaveli to Adyar and back.This is a welcome initiative. On Greenways Road and

Chamiers Road stretch, you have reported that the mini-bus nowstops at Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital and Greenways RoadMRTS Station.

I would suggest two more stops for the benefit of residents ofBishop Garden, Kesavaperumalpuram and R.A. Puram - a stop onGreenways Road near State Human Rights Commission Office,another stop on Chamiers Road just before the signal at theturning towards Park Sheraton Hotel.

Visits to the US SupremeCourt, Federal Judicial Centre aswell as meetings at the AmericanBar Association and witnessingongoing criminal trials and multidoor dispute resolution sittings,Pinto says, were the highlightsof the trip.

On a discussion on capitalpunishment, officials from theFederal Judicial Centre and theDeath Penalty RepresentationProject of the American BarAssociation, Pinto revealed, feltthat convicts on death row havea case if there is an inordinatedelay in deciding their mercypleas. The participants havelaunched a network of lawyers -South Asian Law Team (SALT) toexchange notes and collaborateon legal issues in the future.
