“Pope Francis has dedicated the year 2021 to Saint Joseph, the man whom God the Father chose as the spouse of the Virgin Mary and guardian of

his incarnate Son.”

Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori

Prayer to St. Joseph

Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossible possible, come to my aid in these

times of anguish and difficulty. Take under you protection the serious and troubling situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome (here make your request). My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said the I invoked

you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is as great as

your power.

Amen.

This prayer from a 19th century French prayer book, has been recited by Pope Francis every day for more

than 40 years (cf.Patris Corde, 10).

Saint Joseph Our Father in Faith excerpts from Saint Joseph: Our Father in Faith by

Fr. Frederick L. Miller, S.T.D.

JOSEPH: THE MAN OF FAITH

The Gospel of Matthew 1:18-25 describe Joseph’s introduction to the mystery of the Incarnation. Following Pope John Paul II’s teaching in Guardian of the Redeemer, one may entitle this text, “Joseph’s annunciation.” In the apostolic letter, Pope John Paul II suggests that Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew 1:18-25 should be read together: “There is a strict parallel between the ‘annunciation’ [to Joseph] in Matthew’s text and the one in Luke [to Mary]. The divine messenger introduces Joseph to the mystery of Mary’s motherhood.

Jesuit Father Joseph Fitzmeyer has identified 12 points that connect the texts of the Annunciation to Mary in Luke’s Gospel and the annunciation to Joseph in Matthew’s. Luke and Matthew agree on the following points:

1. Jesus’ birth occurred in the days of Herod the Great.

2. Mary, a virgin, is engaged to Joseph. They have not yet come to live together.

3. Joseph is of the House of David.

4. An angel of heaven announces the birth of Jesus.

5. Jesus is recognized as a son of David.

6. Jesus’ conception is said to take place through the Holy Spirit.

7. Joseph is not involved in the conception of Jesus.

8. The name “Jesus” is imposed on Him by the heaven before His birth.

9. The angel identifies Jesus as “Savior.”

10. Jesus is born after Joseph and Mary come to live together.

11. Jesus is born in Bethlehem.

12. Jesus settles, with Mary and Joseph, in Nazareth in Galilee.

More next month!

MSRG WILLIAM VAN GARSSE ASSEMBLY #2664

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States originated on Columbus Day, 1893, It contained no reference to Almighty God, until in New York City on April 22, 1951, the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus adopted a resolution to amend the Pledge of Allegiance as recited at the opening of each of the meetings of the 800 Fourth Degree Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus by the addition of the words “under God” after the words “one nation”, The adoption of this resolve by the Supreme Board of Directors had the effect of an immediate initiation of this practice throughout the aforesaid Fourth Degree Assembly meetings. At their annual State Meetings, held in April and May of 1952, the State Councils of Florida, South Dakota, New York and Michigan adopted resolutions recommending that the Pledge of Allegiance be so amended and that Congress be petitioned to have such amendment made effective. On, August 21, 1952, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, at its annual meeting, adopted a resolution urging that the change be made general and copies of this resolution were sent to the President, the Vice President (as Presiding Officer of the Senate) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The National Fraternal Congress meeting in Boston on September 24, 1952, adopted a similar resolution upon the recommendation of its President, Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart, Several State Fraternal Congresses acted like- wise almost immediately thereafter, At its annual meeting the following year, on August 20, 1953, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus repeated its resolution to make this amendment to the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag general and to send copies of this resolve to the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, and to each member of both Houses of Congress, From this latter action, many favorable replies were received, and a total of seventeen resolutions were introduced in the House of Representatives to so amend the Pledge of Allegiance as set forth in the Public Law relating to the use of the flag. The resolution introduced by Congressman Louis C. Rabaut of Michigan was adopted by both Houses of Congress, and it was signed by President Eisenhower on Flag Day, June 14, 1954, thereby making official the amendment conceived, sponsored, and put into practice by the Knights of Columbus more than three years before. In a message to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart at the meeting of the Supreme Council in Louisville, August 17, 1954, President Eisenhower, in recognition of the initiative of the Knights of Columbus in originating and sponsoring the amendment to the Pledge of Allegiance, said: “We are particularly thankful to you for your part in the movement to have the words ‘under God’ added to our Pledge of Allegiance, these words will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded. For the contribution which your organization has made to this cause, we must be genuinely grateful. “ In August, 1954, the Illinois American Legion Convention adopted a resolution whereby recognition was given to the Knights of Columbus as having initiated, sponsored and brought about the amendment to the Pledge of Allegiance; and on October 6, 1954, the National Executive Committee of the American Legion gave its approval to that resolution.

The Emblem of the Fourth Degree

Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead The Most Holy Trinity.

•   The Globe - God the Father, Creator of the Universe.   •   The Cross - God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind.  •   The Dove - God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.•

Bearers of this emblem are committed to conduct themselves honorably as Christian gentleman in their private and public lives, as well as acting patriotically for the good of their nations.   Likewise, the Fourth Degree sword represents the bearer's reverence for the Eucharist and the Pope, Bishops and Hierarchy of the Church, and displays publicly his willingness to protect his Church and priests.  Considered under a religious aspect, we have the honor and privilege of wearing on our swords and our lapels the sacred symbol of the Most Blessed Trinity.  This should always remind us to live a good Christian life, and that we should never bring dishonor on the emblem we have been privileged to wear.  By this, others may see our good works, through which we will glorify our Holy Religion, our Honored Order and our Beloved Country.

Sir Knights, I thought is would be a good thing as we start the new Columbian Year that we are reminded of our Vision, Goals and Program Planning. The Vision and Goals speak to our desire to grow personally, glorifying God through our service to community and nation, working to keep God in the civic arena and our visible reminder to serve our community through the Color Corps. Our Program Planning calls for us to concentrate our efforts Fourth Degree Pro-Deo and Pro Patria Scholarships, Serving Those Who Served, To Be a Patriot, Get Out the Vote, and Flag Protocol. In addition, we have the option to get involved with programs that honor the memory of deceased Fourth Degree Knights. The Chalice Program is one of the most enduring programs that memorializes a deceased Fourth Degree Knight and helps a priest acquire a precious chalice. Another involves presenting a crucifix with the emblem of the Order to the family of the deceased Fourth Degree Knight.
