MSA Quarterly Newsletter Spring 2013

Greetings to the Northwestern Community,

With the 2012-2013 academic year coming to an end, the MSA staff wants to take this opportunity to reflect on a very successful spring quarter, that has included a vibrant 2nd Annual JubilAsian during Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, engaging MSA INC and Quench discussions, and our 4th Annual Senior Celebration. We are looking forward to our annual Lavender Graduation and JOY (NU’s Black Congratulatory) as well as our first ever Latin@ Congratulatory and GraduAsian programs to celebrate the accomplishments of our diverse communities! As we move into the summer months, MSA will begin to plan for the 2013-2014 school year and set the foundation for what we expect to be another great year. Celebrating AchievementCongratulations to Ashleigh Joplin for winning a $5,000 merit scholarship through the Deborah Orin-Eilbeck/White House

Correspondents’ Association! This scholarship is awarded to students of high academic achievement and journalistic

promise who intend to concentrate in government and public affairs reporting.

As a recipient of this scholarship, Ashleigh attended the White House Correspondents’

Association’s honorary luncheon and dinner in Washington, DC, headlined by

Conan O’Brien.

This quarter’s MSA INC featured Dr. Jennifer Richeson, professor of Psychology and African American Studies. She presented her groundbreaking and award-winning research in a presentation titled, “The Psychological Consequences of Contending with Racial Bias,” leaving only standing room for those in attendance. Our thanks to African American Studies for their co-sponsorship of Dr. Richeson’s talk.

MSA INC: Intellectual Networking within our Community

African American Student Affairs and For Members Only (NU’s Black Student Alliance) co-sponsored the annual Harambee celebration to kick off Black History Month 2013. Over 300 students, faculty, staff, and alums joined us to celebrate African, Caribbean, and African American culture. Winners of the annual Gardner/Exum Scholarship were announced, and NU’s Black Alumni Association presented awards to various faculty, staff, and alums for their decades of service to the Black community.

Harambee

Asian/Asian American Student Affairs and the Northwestern University Asian/Asian American Alumni Association (NU-A5) co-hosted its 2nd annual student/alumni networking event at the John Evans Alumni Center. Alumni shared advice related to academics, internships, and careers across industries with approximately 60 undergraduate students, which helped to foster a stronger connection between students and alumni.

AAA Connect Networking Reception

On January 24th, Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs in collaboration with the Latino Alumni of Northwestern University (LANU) hosted its 8th annual networking reception. Over 50 students, alumni and staff gathered at the Guild Lounge for an evening of networking and community building. LANU awarded scholarships to Carlos Martinez, Isabella Pasbakhsh, Gabriella Gonzales and Sergio Alvarez.
