There are many national holidays in Russia, when people all over the country do not work and have special celebrations. The major holidays are: New Year's Day, Women's Day, May Day, Victory Day, and Independence Day.

The first holiday of the year is New Year's Day. People see the new year in at midnight on the 31st of December. They greet the new year with champagne and listen to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o'clock.

There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people consider New Year's Day to be a family holiday. But the young prefer to have New Year parties of their own.

A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 7th of January. It's a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day.Non-official "Men's Day" is the 23d of February, it is a public holiday called "The Homeland Defenders Day". All men in Russia are liable for call-up (including reservists), so they all are celebrities. On this day women usually give men small gifts.

On the 8th of March we celebrate Women's Day when men are supposed to do everything about the house and cook all the meals. This is pretty nice — at least once a year women can take a break and forget about all those dishes, cooking, kids, take a magazine and relax on a coach.

The 1st of May is the Day of Labour. During Soviet time there were huge demonstrations on this day, as everybody was obliged to show his loyalty to the state; now only communists organize meetings on this date.

The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9th of May, 1945, the Soviet Army and its allies completely defeated the German fascists and the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War ended. A magnificent memorial on PoklonnayaGora has been built to commemorate the Victory. Many veterans take part in the military parade and lay wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Radio and television broadcast popular war songs. A lot of guests from different countries of the .world come to Moscow to participate in the celebrations.

Independence Day is anew holiday in our country. On the 12th of June, 1992, the first President of Russia was elected.

The 1st of September is the Day of Knowledge — it's the beginning of a school year. Children go to schools with flowers for teachers, there are meetings before the classes start.The 12th of December — the Constitution Day. This day the first Constitution of the Russian Federation was adopted in 1993 (previous Constitutions were all Soviet Unions).

Russians love to celebrate. We adopted the Western holidays such as St. Valentine, and Halloween. We also appreciate Chinese New Year, Muslim and Jewish holidays, as Russians are very tolerant to other religions.

We also celebrate Easter and lots of professional holidays which are not public holidays and banks, offices and schools do not close.10. ShoppingWhen you need to buy something, you go to the shop. Many people like shopping,

especially women. There are a lot of types of shops in every city or town, such as a department store, a food supermarket, women's and men's clothing shops, grocery, butchery and bakery. I prefer to do shopping at big supermarkets and department stores. They sell a wide range of goods in one premise and it is very convenient for me. We often go to the greengrocery, which is stored, by potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, beetroots, cucumbers, green peas, etc. Everything is sold packed and ready-weighed. In the dairy they sell milk, cheese, butter, cream, and so on. Nowadays shopping represents an integral part of our living as for many people it’s not just a need but also a great pleasure.

Clothes and FashionPeople have various attitudes to fashion. Some are indifferent and do not care what they

wear. Others, mostly women, are very choosy about what clothes to wear and like to spend a lot of money on them. Most people buy ready-made clothes at clothes shops or second-hand shops, but there are those who like to have their clothes made at the tailor's. There are some people who dress to the latest fashion even if it does not suit them. It seems to be their hobby to follow the fashion magazines and see what leading designers present.

Fashion concerns not only clothes, but also hair style, makeup and accessories, such as shoes, handbags, gloves, belts, hats, scarves or jewellery and glasses. Styles, cuts, designs and particularly the length of clothes change very quickly because dressmaking has become big

business nowadays. Fashions often revert to older styles; what is out of fashion, funny or ridiculous now, may look romantic a few decades later.

The way we dress also depends on our taste, on the season and the proper occasion. In summer we usually wear light summer dresses, shorts or Bermuda shorts and various T-shirts. The usual summer footwear is sandals and flip-flops.

In winter people wear something warm - trousers, jeans, cardigans and jumpers. People also wear anoraks, winter coats and jackets, sometimes even fur coats outside.

On special occasions people usually dress up. When going to a concert or to the theatre, evening dresses and suits are appropriate. For sports people put on sportswear, such as sports trousers, jeans, shorts, T-shirts and trainers.

The most popular types of clothes with teenagers are jeans or trousers, shirts and T-shirts of different colours, sweatshirts or pullovers and trainers. Boots and shoes of the "Converse" shoe company are very popular with the young people now.

As for me, my favourite articles of clothes are jeans, T-shirts and trainers. At my school pupils must wear a uniform, so I don't have a problem with what to put on when I go to school. When I- go out, I prefer something comfortable like jeans and a sweatshirt. I try to follow the fashion, but fashionable clothes are rather expensive and since I haven't got a job yet, I have to ask my parents for pocket money. I usually buy clothes at a market and choose clothes similar to the ones that are in fashion at the moment. This saves money!

School uniformThe question of uniforms and having dress codes is still argued and discussed among

teachers and students. There are a lot of arguments against and in favour of uniform. Students protest against dress codes because they want to have more freedom. Teachers say that free style makes it difficult for children to concentrate on their classes.

Let’s read some information about the school uniforms in Britain, America, Russia and Belarus.

The word "uniform” means "having the same form”. So a school uniform means that every child in the school wears the same clothes. In some countries school uniform is normal and most schools have one. In other countries, particularly in continental Europe, the USA and Canada, uniform is worn mostly in private schools.

School uniform in Britain. Pupils in most secondary schools in Britain have to wear a school uniform. This usually means a white blouse for girls with a dark-coloured skirt and a pullover

Shirts and blazers are also common.Boys wear shirts and ties, dark trousers and dark-coloured pullovers or blazers.

In some schools pupils also wear blazers with the school badge on the pocket. They often have to wear some kind of hat on the way to and from school – caps for boys and berets for girls. Shoes are usually black or brown. And no high heels.

During the 1990s state schools in the USA began to introduce uniforms due to the claims that wearing uniform leads to better discipline and educational results. Both the Clinton and Bush administrations have been in favour of school uniforms.

Today, most schools require girls to wear skirts, others allow girls the choice of skirts or trousers.

Some schools have unisex uniforms—a shirt, a sweater or blazer and sometimes trousers of a given colour.

Boys typically wear a collared shirt, a tie, and trousers of required colours, although polo shirts are also permitted

Uniforms may vary according to the time of year. In many schools, students wear lighter uniform clothing during the hotter months of the school year. However, in some schools students have to wear long sleeved shirts, ties, woollen sweaters, blazers, woollen skirts or jumpers, and knee socks or tights in any season and weather.

In Russia, school uniforms were cancelled after 1917 revolution, but were re-introduced in 1948. Wearing uniform was made obligatory and pupils were punished for not following the rules.

The style of Soviet school uniform was modernized in 1962 and since that time was modified each decade. Boys generally wore dark blue trousers and jackets, girls — brown dresses with black aprons and black bows (on special occasions, white aprons and bows were worn).

The members of the Young Pioneer organization wore famous red neckties and badges. Badges were also worn by October children and Komsomol members.

In 1992, compulsory school uniforms were cancelled. Today, there is no unified standard uniform in Russia, however, many gymnasiums and lyceums, especially prestigious ones, as well as certain schools may have their own uniform that students are required to wear.

Belarusian educational institutions may either have their own uniform or a certain dress-code.

There is also a modern-day tradition for girls to dress into brown Soviet-style school uniform for their graduation ceremony.

8.Порядок выполнения работыGood things about school uniform Having a school uniform gives you a school identity. It means that you belong to that particular school. With a uniform you don't need many casual clothes. It reduces class differences because everyone has to wear the same. Uniform is usually cheaper than everyday dress. Wearing a uniform helps to prepare students for the world of work, where uniforms are often worn. Schools with uniforms have better educational results. This is because there is better discipline. Bad things about school uniform Uniform is often not practical or pleasant to wear. Designs are often old-fashioned and ugly. Forcing children to wear uniform can ignore their religious and cultural needs. Wearing a school uniform is not good preparation for working. Only a few jobs require uniforms, and many of these are low-paid service jobs. Skirts or formal trousers are not good for doing sport or running around at lunchtime or breaks. Some uniforms are a bit too casual and can look not very neat.

They can be very expensive. You can get fed up of wearing the same old, same old every day. You get into trouble if you don't wear uniform.

Geographical profile of RussiaRussia is the largest country in the world covering eastern part of Europe and northern part

of Asia. The total area of Russia is about seventeen million square kilometres with the population of about 145 million people. It borders on many countries, for example, China, Georgia, Finland, Norway, Ukraine and others.

The country is washed by twelve seas and three oceans: the Pacific Ocean in the east, the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. Among the seas are the Baltic Sea, the Azov Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and others.

The landscape of Russia is varied. Most of the territory consists of vast plains that are steppes to the south and heavily forested to the north, with the tundra along the northern coast. 10% of the world's arable land is in Russia.

Mountain ranges are along the southern borders, such as the Caucasus (with Mount Elbrus which the highest point in both Russia and Europe) and the Altai Mountains (with Mount Belukha, which is the highest point of Siberia). The Ural Mountains, rich in mineral resources, divide Europe and Asia, going from the north to the south.

The climate in the country varies. The areas which are far from the sea have humid continental climate and it is predominant in all parts of the country except for the tundra and the southeast. Most of Northern European Russia and Siberia have subarctic climate, with extremely severe winters (especially in the Sakha Republic, where the Northern Hemisphere's Pole of Cold

The climate of the coastal part of Krasnodar Territory on the Black Sea is humid subtropical with mild and wet winters. Winters are dry -compared to summers in many regions of East Siberia and the Far East. According to the Constitution adopted in 1993, the Russian Federation is a presidential republic. Just like political systems in other countries, our political system also has three branches of power legislative, executive and˸ judicial.The Federal Assembly represents the legislative branch of power. It is also made up of two houses the Federation Council and the State Duma, which˸ make laws. Both houses are headed by chairmen called speakers. Russia is divided into 89 federal subjects. The State Duma consists of 450 deputies. 225 members are elected directly by the people. The other half of deputies is appointed by their parties after party-list voting according to which every party gains a number of seats. The main function of the Federal Assembly is to make laws. Every law must be approved by the State Duma and the Federation Council, and signed by the President.The Federal Government represents the executive branch of power. The President can even dissolve the State Duma if it doesn't agree with his suggestions three times running. The President has his Administration but it is not part of the Federal Government. The Supreme Court is the highest court for civil and criminal cases. The responsibility of the Constitutional Court is to determine whether new laws or actions of President correspond to the Constitution. The Constitution is the main law of Russia. It guarantees the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens.Russian political system also has "the system of checks and balances" like that in the USA. For example, the President appoints the heads of the Federal Government and the Chairman of the Government, but the State Duma must approve his appointment. The President can veto laws passed by the Federal Assembly, but the Federal Assembly can pass laws over the President's veto by a two-thirds majority. The Constitutional Court has the right to declare actions of the President, the Federal Assembly and the Federal Government unconstitutional.There are many political parties in our country. And this is what determined the character of fashion that was born here and designers who had created this fashion. They are not related to the rules or restrictions and they are free from all directions and tendencies. Although all their creations anyway glorify « Old England » with its traditions. These creative artists without exception differ with great love to new ideas, no matter how curious they are. For example, Charles Worth has created crinoline, pad and the first mannequin.
