Vasco da Gama

  • Vasco   da   Gama  was   a   Portuguese  explorer   and

had  originally  gone  on  an  expedition  to  find  trade  routs to  Asia   when  he  saw  the  beauty  of  Mozambique  in  1498.

    • He  returned to Mozambique 1500 intending to subjugate its

coastal areas and establish Portuguese dominance there. This he did very successfully.

The Reasons Behind it All.........

• Portugal wasn't the only country vying for land all of Europe was.• They were doing this  because Europe's biggest trade routs from

the East went through TWO Italian cities. The rest of Europe felt cheated because the Italian merchants marked the prices up so high and made a huge profit from it all.

• Since they resented this they took action and began to search for better trade routs to the East.......

• Ones that would stop making the Italians rich and put some money in their pocket as well.

• They were also  sent by Catholic churches to capture Holy Land from the Muslim Turks. Although they did not succeed the Europeans did learn how to make better maps and sturdier ships. They were also exposed to spices and goods from the east that showed promise in  lots of money in the future.

Portugal's Empire

• Portuguese wanted to find trade routs around  Africa to Asia. They believed they could get  could get a lot of money as traders.

• They wanted to try to get Asian goods for a cheaper price. • They also wanted to spread christianity along the African

west coast.• First global empire in history.

Before The End

• The Portuguese had a certain dislike for the Muslims in Africa. Mostly because they were in charge of the trade routes at the time.

• Prince Henry the Navigator son of Portuguese king sent many expeditions down the west cost of Africa.

• Wanting to establish Africa as a  Portuguese colony and break Muslim hold on the trade routes.

• Sadly, for them they did not make money trading gold. So they tried to make sugar plantations...... which required lots of labor.

• That's when slave importing became very evident.• Prince Henry could have done the right thing and put a stop to it

immediately but instead he encouraged it. So much that it stayed around for another 400 years.

•  For the next 300 years Portuguese sailor established forts and trading posts in Africa....

The end

Portuguese attention turned overseas towards a military expedition to the Muslim lands of north Africa.

Significant losses to the Dutch in Portuguese India and Southeast Asia brought and end to the Portuguese trade monopoly.

Mozambique in the Past and Future

Today Mozambique is just another place on the planet with all its faults and beauties and stupid politics made one. When Portuguese took over Mozambique didn't hold onto a lot of the its native traditions and most of them were forgotten. As sad as this is Mozambique was never the same after the Portuguese hold loosened and finally broke  altogether. But there beauty remains and many search for the old ways of their life. Who knows they ay yet be recovered? there is always hope.
