P.S I Love You

Holly Kennedy is beautiful, smart and married to the love of her life - a passionate, funny, and impetuous Irishman named Gerry. So when Gerry's life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it's a good thing he planned ahead. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief, but in rediscovering herself. The first message arrives on Holly's 30th birthday in the form of a cake, and to her utter shock, a tape recording from Gerry, who proceeds to tell her to get out and "celebrate herself". In the weeks and months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way; P.S. I Love You. Holly's mother and best friends begin to worry that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly embarks on a journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life.

Summary

Film opening

The movie starts out with Holly (Hilary Swank) running across the streets

of New York. What seems to be her being followed by a stranger, it is

actually her husband Jerry (Gerard Butler). He tries to talk to her, but she

doesn’t speak to him until they are in their apartment. They begin to

argue about him telling Holly’s mom that they’re not going to have

children yet. They fuss about how she hates her job and that she “plans”

on moving out of that apartment. Jerry storms out and Holly slams the

bathroom door. She slowly exits the bathroom and stands in the living

room while Jerry opens the door and asks to come back in. He apologizes

for saying the wrong thing to her mother and they reminisce about how

they use to have nasty sex. He does a Chippendale style dance wearing

only his boxers, suspenders, and a leather jacket while she watches in

bed. Jerry pulls of his suspenders and one the clip hits him in the eye. She

tells him to turn off the lights since he was the last one up, but refuses to

because he hurt his eye.

The Proposal

For three years, Andrew Paxton has slaved as the assistant to Margaret Tate, hard-driving editor at a New York publisher. When Margaret, a Canadian, faces deportation for an expired visa, she hatches a scheme to marry Andrew - he agrees if she'll promise a promotion. A sceptical INS agent vows to test the couple about each other the next Monday. Andrew had plans to fly home that weekend for his grandma's 90th, so Margaret goes with him - to Sitka, Alaska - where mom, dad, and grams await. Family dynamics take over: tensions between dad and Andrew, an ex-girlfriend, Andrew's dislike of Margaret, and her past colour the next few days, with the INS ready to charge Andrew with fraud.

Film Opening

The movie starts off with Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) snoozing his

alarm clock, and jumping out of bed realizing that he’s overslept and

could be late for work. He rushes out and gets to the office in the nick of

time. Just as he gets to his desk, Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) walks

into the office. Everyone either stutters or looks away as she coldly,

hurriedly walks past them and directly into her office. Margaret is a book

editor for a big NYC Publishing company and Andrew is her

assistant/secretary.

Margaret fires an editor named Bob Spaulding, who tries to embarrass

her by yelling at her in front of the entire office. She takes the abuse

then threatens to have security escort him out if he doesn’t leave

immediately. Once he’s gone, she tells Andrew that she’s gonna need

him this weekend causing him to break plans to attend his grandmother’s

90th birthday party. His father berates him over the phone and urges him

to quit. When he senses Margaret coming towards him, he makes it seem

like he’s speaking with a writer, but she’s onto him and asks if his family

told him to quit. He replies, “Everyday.”
