Moving to Taiwan?
A step-by-step guide to make it as easy as possible

Start at the Beginning
A passport: If you don’t have one, get one.
Passports can take awhile to process, and they have long life cycles, so once you start considering an international move, apply for a passport. Even if you decide not to move, it’s useful as a secondary I.D. and for future international travel.

Apply for a Visitor’s Visa
Taiwan has eased up on it’s entry requirements over the years, but the better safe than sorry approach should remove any possible problems from an undertrained immigration employee or sudden policy shift. Entering on a visitor’s visa is much more secure than entering on a landing visa or as visa exempt.

Find Your Flight
Determine what’s most important to you (price, comfort, or value) and plan accordingly. Remember, the cheapest flight may not be the best value flight, and it could be full of long layovers.

Arrange Your Accommodation
Immigration will want to know where you plan on staying, and having something established, even temporary lodging, will make your transition less stressful. If you are traveling or moving on a budget, consider a hostel.

Let Your Bank Know
This is an absolute must do. Having your ATM or credit cards frozen because your bank thinks they have been stolen is a huge problem. It can cut off your cash flow, and it’s particularly difficult to get things fixed from overseas.

Establish Bill and Mail Management
You will need a way to pay your bills and handle your mail from your home country while living overseas. Many banks have online services available, and there are mail forwarding options that offer similar services for your mail.

Get Your Documents in Order
Make sure to have paper copies of your flight tickets, reservations, proof on an onward destination (a ticket out of Taiwan), proof of funds (bank account ledger), and even copies of your passport and visitor’s visa.

Prepare for Customs and Immigration
When you get to the counter after arriving in the airport, make sure to have everything easily accessible. Have the disembarkation card completed. The more organized you are, the less questions, if any, you will receive.

Know How to Get to Your Accommodation
While there are many transportation options at the airport, the easiest way to get to your accommodation after a long international flight is by taxi, and it’s worth the price. If you choose to use a taxi, use a yellow taxi, as they are government approved.
