“I was born here in the heart of Lessinia and since I was a small child, I have loved the dawns and sunsets; the beauty and the secrets of the neighbouring mountains. Look, I am the one on the left in the old picture. Even as a young boy I began the craft that had been my father’s, learning the artisan rules and the secrets of the materials. It was my passion to create and the first mountain shoes I crafted, I tested myself, throughout the woods and paths of my beloved mountains”.

Nello Grossule remembers with these words. In 1937, he began learning the age-old trade of the shoemaker and by crafting his first pair of mountai-neering boots, at the beginning for himself, but eventually for many of the inhabitants of the village, he fur-thered this passion. The appreciation for the care and enthusiasm for the products he created convinced him that quality was the key to his success. In the early 1950s he poured his life’s earnings into the investment of equipment and a few select craftsmen and began manufacturing in his small work shop. With increasing expe-rience, Nello elaborated innovative working techniques and he devoted himself to the research of improving materials, especially the leather that he personally selects, even today.

As the years passed, his boots became recognized all over Italy because of their extraordinary strength and comfort. He hired additional skilled craftsmen and created his trademark “Gronell”. At the present time the trade is carried out by Nello’s sons Fabio and Mario Grossule, in these years they have been able to match practice experience with scientific research as their father did. Today the trademark “GRONELL” is a lasting symbol of quality, testified by the certification UNI EN ISO 9002 that was obtained in December 1999. “GRONELL” today holds an essential place, nationally and internationally, in the manufacture of technical mountainee-ring shoes. This ancient craft has been handed down wisely to synchronize with highly modern technology, supported by innovative styles and sophisticated materials in an endless evolution. The respect for the culture of the past remains unchanged, while technical research is continuously rising.

“Sono nato qui, nel cuore della Lessinia e fin da piccolo ho imparato ad amare albe e tramonti, segreti e bellezze delle vicine montagne. Guarda, io sono quello a sinistra nella vecchia fotografia. Io che già cosi piccolo mi misuravo nell’arte che era stata di mio padre, imparandone le difficili regole artigiane ed i segreti dei materiali, per dare forma con paziente lavoro manuale, alle mie prime scarpe da montagna che io stesso avrei provato attraverso boschi e sentieri”.

Così, Nello Grossule ricorda quando nel 1937 aiutando suo padre a riparare le scarpe apprendeva le tecniche di calzolaio ed iniziava a dilettarsi nella costruzione dei suoi primi scarponi da montagna. Scarponi che Nello costruiva per se e per gli abitanti del paese e che, grazie alla cura ed alla passione che gli dedica-va, erano molto apprezzati. Furono proprio questi apprezzamenti a convincerlo sempre di più che il segreto era proprio quello di avere una qualità sempre migliore. Nei primi anni ‘50, decide di fare il “grande passo” e, con i fondi fin lì raccolti, acquista qualche macchina-rio, assume alcuni collaboratori e dà cosi inizio al suo piccolo laboratorio artigiano.

Nello, con la crescente esperienza, ela-bora tecniche di lavorazione innovative e si dedica alla ricerca di materiali sem-pre migliori, a partire dai pellami che ancora oggi seleziona “personalmente”. Con il passare degli anni, i suoi pro-dotti si fanno conoscere in tutta l’Italia per il loro gran comfort e per la loro resistenza e mentre il suo laboratorio assume nuovi operai specializzati, egli decide di dare vita al marchio Gronell.

Attualmente l’attività è portata avanti da Fabio e Mario Grossule che, con la stessa passione del padre, hanno saputo coniugare l’esperienza pratica con la ricerca mantenendo saldo il nome del marchio. Oggi come ieri il nome Gronell è simbolo indelebile di qualità come testimonia la certificazione UNI EN ISO 9002 ottenuta nel dicembre 1999. Gronell, occupa oggi un posto decisamente importante a livello nazio-nale ed internazionale nella produzione di calzature tecniche da montagna. Un’arte antica sapientemente traman-data sino alla attuale convivenza con una tecnologia modernissima, affianca-ta inoltre a scelte stilistiche altrettanto innovative e a materiali sofisticati in continua evoluzione. Il rispetto per la cultura di un tempo rimane inalterato; la ricerca tecnica è in continua crescita.

MARIO MERELLI, 49 anni, bergamasco, vive a Lizzola (frazione di Valbondione). Da sempre ap-passionato di montagna, ha seguito sin da piccolo gli insegnamenti del padre Patrizio, nota guida alpi-na. Mario ha all’attivo 10 ottomila (delle famose 14 vette più alte del mondo), l’ultimo, il Dhaulaghiri, la montagna bianca dell’Himalaya, nel Nepal centrale, 8.167 metri.

MARIO MERELLI, 49 years old, comes from Bergamo and lives in Lizzola (a subdivision of Valbondione). In love with the mountains for his whole life, since he was a child he has followed the teachings of his father Patrick, a well-known mountain guide. Mario has 10 eight-thousand-metre peaks (of the famous 14 highest peaks in the world) to his credit, the latest one being the Dhaulaghiri, the white mountain of the Himalayas, in central Nepal, 8,167 metres.

15 maggio 2011. It is summit, è vetta. Solo sentendo la frase magica, Mario Merelli ha capito d’avercela fatta, di aver vinto il Dhaulagiri. Un’immensa soddisfazione, arrivata dopo due tentativi non riusciti (nel 2001 e nel 2007) e funestati entram-bi dalla scomparsa di un compagno: lo spagnolo Pepe Garces e il bergamasco Sergio Dalla Longa. È arrivato da solo. Tutti, compreso il compagno di cordata Marco Zaffaroni, hanno desistito a causa della bufera di neve e vento e della neb-bia fittissima.«La salita finale è stata terribile: non vedevo più nulla, non sapevo più dov’ero. Ho capito che ero arrivato, perché non c’era più niente da salire». Ma il dubbio è rimasto finché, il 19, la comunità inter-nazionale degli alpinisti, ha certificato l’avvenuta impresa. «Per arrivare in cima a un 8.000, bisogna metterci la pelle. Perché non è come l’alpinismo classico, dove si è legati in due, dove le tempe-rature sono accettabili e le condizioni di respiro normali; quando si tenta un 8.000, tutto arriva all’estremo, allora ognuno deve pensare per sé, deve pensare solo a farcela. Il 15 maggio, sono uscito dalla tenda alle 4 del mattino e vi sono ritornato alle 4 del pomeriggio: 12 ore tra salire e scendere, con un dislivello di circa 800 metri. Il Dhaulaghiri non è una montagna semplice, è caratterizzata da una forte instabilità meteorologica e

dal freddo (spesso sono 40 gradi sotto zero), la mattina generalmente è sereno, a mezzogiorno comincia a rannuvolarsi e prima di mezzogiorno e mezzo puoi star certo che nevica. Quando dal campo base si vedono scendere delle valanghe enormi, tu sei lì che pensi che domani dovrai passare di là... Per consolarti, ti dici: se si è staccata stasera, domani non succederà».

Cosa si fa prima di affrontare l’ultima fatica? «Si celebra la Puja, cerimonia religiosa che invoca la benedizione delle Divi-nità che risiedono sulle montagne. Si accendono rami di ginepro e incenso e le volute del fumo si alzano verso il cielo, portando con sé le preghiere degli uomini. È sempre un momento di forte emozione».

L’obiettivo è raggiungere tutti i 14 ottomila? «L’obiettivo è il gusto di arrampicare; ci dev’essere sempre il desiderio di partire, di ricominciare, di mettersi in gioco. Per-ché, a certe altezze e con certe condizio-ni meteo, devi aver voglia di uscire dalla tenda. Se un giorno mi troverò di fronte all’ultimo 8.000, sarà come la prima volta, con la stessa passione per la montagna. Non per una classifica, per un primato, ma per me stesso».

15 May 2011. It’s the top. Just hearing this magic phrase, Mario Merelli knew that he’d done it, he’d conquered Dhaulagiri. It was an immense satisfaction, finally arriving after the two failed attempts (in 2001 and 2007) both marred by the death of a comrade: the Pepe Garces from Spain and Sergio Dalla Longa from Bergamo. He got there by himself. Everyone, including his climbing partner Marco Zaffaroni, had given up because of the blizzard and the wind and the thick fog.“The final climb was terrible: I couldn’t see anything, I had no idea where I was. I only knew I had arrived because there was nothing more to climb.” But my doubts remained until finally, at 7:00 pm, the international climbing commu-nity certified the success of the climb. “To get to the top of an 8,000 metre peak, you have to put your life on the line. Because it’s not like classic mountaineering where everyone is tied to a partner, where the temperatures are acceptable and breathing conditions are normal; when so-meone tries to do an 8,000 metre peak everything comes to an extreme, and then everyone has to think for himself, has to think only of succeeding. On 15 May, I left the tent at 4:00 in the morning: 12 hours for the climb and the descent, with a difference in altitude of about 800 metres. The Dhaulaghiri is not an easy mountain, it’s characterized by incredibly unstable weather and by extreme cold (often reaching 40 degrees below zero). Mornings are generally clear, at midday it begins to cloud up and before 12:30 you can be sure that it will be snowing. When the base camp sees enormous avalanches come down, you are there and you think that tomorrow I’ll have to go that way… You calm yourself, saying: if something broke off tonight, nothing’s going to break off again tomorrow.”

What do you do before facing that last effort?“We celebrate the Pija, a religious ceremony that invokes the blessings of the deities residing in the mountains. We light branches and incense and the spirals of smoke rise to the sky, taking with them the men’s prayers. It is always a moment of powerful emotion.”

Is it your goal to climb all 14 eight-thousand-metre peaks?“My goal is just to enjoy climbing them; there always has to be the desire to go, to start again, to get involved. Why, at certain heights and under certain weather conditions, you have to have really want to leave the tent. If, one of these days, I find myself looking up at the last eight-thousand-metre peak, it will be just like it was the first time, with the same passion for the mountains. Not for a ranking, not for a record, but for myself.”

The mountains are born from the sea and they find their roots in the sea. They are proud of their size, their sheer walls, their wild peaks; before climbing to their summits stop to pick up a stone, even a small one; that fragment is a tear… the mountain’s tear.
