ContentsToo many unsafe vehicles?

The Motor Trade Association (MTA), carried out a survey in April that showed that nine percent of all the vehicles surveyed had neither a current warrant of fitness (WoF) nor were currently licensed.

This survey of 500 vehicles was carried out at 25 service stations across the country and looked at a range of vehicle ownership and compliance issues. The survey by MTA staff included a check of the vehicles’ WoF and license status.

The vehicles found not to have a current WoF or be licensed tended to be, but weren’t always the same vehicle, even though a vehicle is required to have a current WoF before it can be relicensed. With almost 2.8 million light vehicles in the national fleet, these findings indicate as many as a quarter of a million of them may not be compliant.

Not surprisingly, 31 percent of drivers whose vehicle had an expired WoF were from the lowest income group (less than $25,000 pa). A similar picture emerged for those whose vehicle was unlicensed, with 43 percent also coming from this income group. There was however, a much wider spread in terms of the age of those driving vehicles with no WoF or license, which were represented

across all age bands in similar numbers.Of the vehicles that were unlicensed, the majority

were less than 100 days overdue, with the largest number of those being less than 10 days out of date.

Failure to have a current WoF was more significant. While the majority were again less than 100 days overdue, the largest number was between 31 and 100 days out of date. Remarkably one vehicle had not been issued with a WoF for almost six years!

Definitely food for thought, the question is how can the motor industry encourage the consumer to keep their WoF update and maintain safety standards? I’d be interested in your comments: email [email protected]

Have a safe and prosperous September

Best regards

Robert

Kiwi team smashes land speed record

The Kiwi CMR Motorsport team returned from the Bonneville Salt Flats in August with a land speed record. Well-known Auckland motorsport competitor Reg Cook built a car specifically to run at the Bonneville National speed week event and to break the current 2-litre production car record.

The previous record was set by a Chevrolet Cosworth Vega in 2009 and stood at 156.8 mph (249.6 km/h).

Cook, a Nissan stalwart, chose a Nissan NX Coupe with an SR20 twin cam 4 valve engine for the attempt. The rules allow for extensive modifications to the engine and suspension but the outside body must remain standard.

Helped by a group of 20, Cook spent a year building the car to the rules governing the class. The rules relating to the roll cage, on-board fire extinguishers, wheel rims, safety belts, and even a parachute, were all carefully studied and incorporated into the build.

The car was finished the night before it was to go into a container to be shipped to Los Angeles.

Two technical inspections by the organisers were carried out in Los Angeles before the team transported the car 1100km by road to Bonneville in Utah. The final inspection was completed at Bonneville and the car was ready for its first run.

With temperatures around 40 degrees during the

week-long event, it was a test of physical endurance for the team as well as a test of the cars performance.

“It was a challenge just to find your way around Bonneville Salt Flats,” says Reg Cook. “The event attracts more than six hundred competitors and more than 4000 crew members. The pit area alone took up more than two kilometres of space along the salt flats.”

After completing rookie orientation (none of the team had previously taken part in the Bonneville event) the car was lined up for its first run. A nervous Cook was waved away by the starter and at the end of the 3 mile mark the car had achieved a remarkable 168 mph (269 km/h).

The team was delighted at how well the car had performed straight out of the box.

To qualify as an official record another run over the same course had to be completed the next morning. The average of the two runs would stand as the new record. At 8.00am the next day the car was on the salt again and this time reached 171 mph for a new record of 169.5 mph.

With a record in the bag it would have been easy to sit back and enjoy the satisfaction of their achievement but with typical Kiwi ‘never give up’ attitude the team set out to push their record even higher.

By the end of the event, they had set a new Bonneville (and World) land speed record of 174.5 mph (279.2 km/h), smashing the previous record by 17.7 mph!

And the final words from Cook: “Fantastic. Now what shall we do next?”

Taking the guess work out of quoting

One of the useful features of the Autodata information network is its repair time module, which lists the accurate amount of time it should take for up to 346 individual repair jobs per vehicle.

“With so much emphasis on the importance of technical data and diagnostics, it’s easy to overlook the one module which may influence whether a workshop makes a profit or loss on a quoted repair, no matter how good the diagnostics might be,” says Autodata managing director Brett Engeman.

The repair time module lists the recommended repair time established by the car manufacturers. Franchise dealerships are expected to be able to carry out the repairs within these time frames. The manufacturers’ repair time are also used to calculate what they will pay out on warranty repairs carried out by the franchise dealerships.

There are two good reasons why this is important to the aftermarket repair shops. First, it provides workshops with a guide on what dealerships are charging for repairs which is important for competitive reasons.

The main reason is to help independent workshops calculate their quotes correctly, rather than using guesswork.

“Misquoting of jobs is a big issue,” says Brett. “If a customer speaks to a non-technical person, or a mechanic who has never worked on a similar vehicle before, an educated guess can often be a costly embarrassment.

“Usually the workshop will wear the loss on labour charges because a quote is seen by the customer as being final.”

As an example, the Mercedes A160 has an odd shaped engine, with parts of the motor under the driver’s feet. Unless the technician was familiar with this model, he might quote a maximum of two hours to replace something as simple as a starter motor. He would be at least two hours out because the manufacturer says it should take four hours.

A tool is built into the Autodata module to help the workshop put an appropriate percentage on top of the recommended time.

This is necessary because aftermarket workshops can’t be expected to compete with the franchise dealerships knowledge of the vehicle, and also have access to genuine tools.

Autel MaxiDas DS708 from GDC Equipment

GDC Equipment says that Autel produces a great range of diagnostic tools from code readers and brake service tools all the way up the MaxiDAS DS-708 Scanner.

GDC Equipment says it has been supplying the MaxiDas DS-708 to the NZ market since 2009. The company says this affordable tool has given all small and large workshops the ability to carry out full diagnostic work of all onboard systems in most makes and models of vehicles.

Each scanner is set up with on demand user friendly software updates via a secured Internet connection direct to the Autel server, so users can ensure they have the latest software at all times.

With engineers working split shifts 24/7 on continual software development and with improvement from customer feed back, Autel become one of the fastest growing diagnostic company’s.

With the DS-708 Scanner gaining enormous market share in New Zealand GDC says it has seen some big price changes as other tools struggle to compete with both the DS-708’s coverage and affordable price.

The MaxiDAS DS708 diagnostic system offers the same dealer-level

diagnostic capabilities for most major vehicle manufacturers.

GDC’s Australian partners Interequip are dedicated to the ongoing development of the advanced Holden software including VR to VE Commodore key programming, module programming PIM and BCM Linking in VZ, VY, VX, and VT Commodore models. They are also working on advanced Opel programming that no other aftermarket scan tool has.

Advanced software is currently under development in Australia for Australian-made Ford vehicles. This advanced Australian software is only available in NZ through GDC Equipment.

Some of the scanner capabilities include: fault

code reading, key programming, BCM module linking, module programming, adapting fly by wire, setting electronic park brakes, steering angle sensor calibration, transmission solenoid cleaning procedures, HID light calibration, crank angle sensor adaptation, fuel system testing, diagnosing engine management systems, ABS, airbag, air conditioning, TPS, lighting, and diesel systems with particle filter shake down and more.

“Don’t be fooled by the price of $4,495 plus GST and think that it’s just another cheap scanner,” says GDC director Gary Cotterell. “We believe that there is no other tool in this price bracket that comes even close to the capabilities of this tool. Even when compared head to head even with much more expensive options you will be impressed.

“The MaxiDAS DS708 has now become our biggest selling product and features a multi-layered rubber protector and a very strong housing which is specially built to survive the toughest workshop environment. It is extremely user friendly so anyone can start to use the unit straight away.”

Inside the MaxiDas Scanner there are quality components such as the twin ARM processors and a large 7in touch screen, and with the SD card memory system the design of this tool future proofs the investment in it.

INA releases new catalogueThe new INA Overrunning Alternator Pulley

(OAP) catalogue is now available from Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket. The catalogue features 190 pages referencing a total of 220 different products to suit 850 models from over 50 automotive vehicle manufacturers worldwide, representing 4,400 vehicle applications.

The new INA OAP catalogue features a user-friendly structure and layout. The table of contents is organised by vehicle manufacturers allowing for the quick location of part numbers. Individual chapters have been included, such as vehicle classification, numerical lists and reference-number lists. All have been colour-coded on the index pages leading the user to the right product with little effort. The fourth and final chapter of the catalogue is new. For the first time, all listed overrunning alternator pulleys (OAPs) and overrunning alternator decouplers (OADs) are featured in photos with all technical measurements. This makes finding a matching product much easier. Another new feature making the INA OAP catalogue even more user-friendly are OAP cross-references to other brands and manufacturers. A service section at the end of the catalogue addresses possible causes of auxiliary drive damage, as well as functional testing of OAPs and OAD’s.

Besides listing 195 OAPs, the new catalogue also lists more than 20 OADs. Using different pictograms allows for quick and easy differentiation between both product groups. This is especially important, as an OAP cannot be replaced with an OAD, or vice versa. As a result, choosing the right product for every vehicle is considerably easier.

“There are many vehicles being driven on New Zealand and Australian roads that include OAPs as original equipment, these include many European makes and models along with Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota models,” says automotive aftermarket Schaeffler product specialist Brett Sage.

The complete list of OAP equipped vehicles on New Zealand roads that present aftermarket replacement opportunities in the near future include:Ford: Focus, TransitHolden: Astra, Combo, ZafiraHyundai: i30, Santa Fe, Terracan Kia: Sorento, Soul, Sportage

Mazda: Mazda3, Mazda6, MPV, TributeMitsubishi: Lancer, Lancer EVO, OutlanderNissan: Cube, Navara (D22 & D40), Patrol, Tiida, X-Trail Suzuki: Grand Vitara Toyota: Aurion, Camry, Hi Ace, Hi Lux, Highlander, LandCruiser, Rav4

The new INA Overrunning Alternator Pulley catalogue is not just for passenger car workshops, but it is also the perfect catalogue for automotive electricians who re-build alternators.

Cashing in on cabin filters

With labour rates at an all-time high, service prices are climbing accordingly, meaning customers are beginning to ask more questions and scrutinise their service invoices in more detail. In most cases, this means service centres need to have more answers to the customers questions, and more hard data to support decisions to replace various components.

Cabin filtration is high on the list of new expenses facing customers every time they read their service invoice and reluctantly hand over their credit card. If technicians face opposition from a savvy spender, they need to be armed with some facts to ensure the customer is content with the professional decision made by the technician, which will likely secure return business.

Bosch says its tests have shown in-cabin pollution levels are up to six times greater than what is measured on the roadside. Much of the pollutant streaming from exhaust outlets flow directly into the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of the trailing vehicle. From here, much of it ends up in the lungs of the vehicle’s occupants if their cabin filter is dirty and not performing its duty.

Secondly, dirt, dust and road grime combine with this pollution and collectively form a bacterial breeding ground within the cabin filter medium. These bacteria will gradually release themselves into the cabin airstream, leading to potential allergies, tiredness and fatigue. Using Bosch’s premium-quality cabin filters will mean that foreign particles with a diameter of 0.0025mm will be captured by the filtration medium.

Bosch recommends cabin filter replacement take place annually. Even for budget-conscious customers a new cabin filter represents a very negligible expense for a year’s worth of clean cabin air and allergy protection.

The customer may even give the nod to one of Bosch’s ultra high-performance activated carbon cabin filters. Fitting one of these will filter out particles 500 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

They represent the ultimate in cabin filtration and are a further opportunity to cash-in on clever technology.

It is all about how technicians justify decisions. Give advice and recommendations with confidence inspired by knowledge and the service-based profits will grow and customers will hand over their money with fewer reservations.

From the moment a vehicle arrives at your workshop Bosch works with you to deliver exceptional service that starts with your Bosch trained workshop technicians. Using their best practice service training, your technicians employ Bosch diagnostic equipment to analyse and fault find before rectifying problems using one, or a combination of parts, from the broad range of Bosch OE quality products. Bosch training, Bosch diagnostics and Bosch OE quality parts – that’s the Bosch competitive edge.

The new software also includes MY2010 coverage for premium brands such as Audi, Citroen, Lexus, Mercedes Benz, Peugeot, Renault and Volkswagen. The 11.2 software includes all new proprietary coverage for Volvo petrol and diesel models from 2000-onwards. With each software release, Snap-on says it not only adds new models but goes back through older year-models and update and expands its coverage for earlier vehicles.

Head of diagnostics and equipment for Snap-on, Paul Lynch says that unlike some scan tool manufacturers, Snap-on does not remove content that has been paid for to make way for the new content.

“It gives the software a detailed information bank for past and present vehicles and allows for effective usability for all technicians.”

With Snap-on’s advanced undercar coverage, its tools are now common-place in tyre shops. “After completing a wheel alignment, steering component replacement or replacing a tyre pressure sensor simply follow the vehicles steering-angle rest procedure or TPMS tyre registration function available in the 11.2 Software bundle,” says Paul Lynch.

“There are a growing number of vehicles on the road today with Stability Control and TPMS, and now with our undercar coverage, it takes the guesswork out of the job for automotive technicians.”

In addition to expanded coverage, the 11.2 Software bundle offers over 73,000 new and enhanced component test meter (CTM) tips.

“Technicians tell us about problems they’ve encountered in their workshops and the solutions that worked. Through our help desk we validate that information and put it into Snap-on scan tools with Fast-Track Troubleshooter,” says Paul Lynch. “With the latest enhancements, it’s like having thousands of experienced technicians standing by you in the bay, ready to help.”

With 11.2 Software, technicians have access to more than 25 years of Troubleshooter coverage for Australian, Asian, European and US domestic manufacturers for topics such as engine driveability, transmission, ABS, SRS/airbag, body and many more.

In addition, the 11.2 Software includes over 73,000 new and enhanced tests for Component Test Meters (CTM) and for diagnostic units with scope capabilities. With CTM, narrowing down causes and confirming solutions has never been easier or faster. Technicians can compare lab scope readings to the known good and defective patterns in the databases, as well as check for the variances between their graphing meter test results and those of Snap-on’s examples.

Feedback inspires Hyundai’s new thinking It seems simple enough, but some

people still want to bang their heads against the wall trying to fit non genuine or imitation parts. Hyundai says its genuine parts, however, are engineered to meet the same specifications as those sold on all new Hyundai vehicles.

What’s more, Hyundai New Zealand has made it easier for the trade to purchase Hyundai genuine parts by driving a long term promotion with the 30/30 Real Deal. This means trade buyers will not only receive 30 percent off common service items, but they will also receive 30 percent margin on parts purchases.

Hyundai has listened to feedback from parts representatives across the Hyundai dealer network, and it understands that trade buyers behaviour is influenced by various factors at various levels such as margin, price parity, product availability and knowledge.

Hyundai New Zealand’s parts

manager Chris Carter says that there is an opportunity for all genuine brands to sell more products to the trade through offering consistently good margin, comparative pricing and product availability.

He says genuine brands should continually communicate their current

offer to the trade and then provide the level of service to back that up.

“We believe you’ll find it all with Hyundai, so don’t settle for second best”, says Chris. “Because the

automotive parts market is full of cheap alternatives.”

“Those imitation parts are not manufactured under stringent standards as Hyundai genuine parts and may not adhere to Australian Design Rules. Fitting such parts will not only hamper the quality of your car, but will also affect other parts and cause more problems, leading

to more repairs, or worse, an accident.”

“So for your customer and their family’s safety, always insist on Hyundai genuine parts,” says Chris. “Taking advantage of the 30/30 real deal provides huge savings for the trade and their customers, and

not to mention provides a better overall job. It will help keep the trades reputation in great repair.”

Equipped with the best

The basement workshop in the new Giltrap Group Audi Terminal in Auckland is every bit as impressive as the ground level showroom, even though vehicle owners will probably never get to glimpse it.

That’s because the service area conforms to the international requirements of Audi AG, even down to the colour of the floor tiles, tool chests and vehicle hoists.

Audi service manager Craig Antcliff says the intention was always to have the workshop and service area match the specification used in the public area. This new building looks very space-age when approached from the road with its mesh grille facade. It occupies the footprint of the original Giltrap Prestige/Coutts showroom, where Audi and its predecessor NSU were first sold in New Zealand many years ago and more recently housed the Lamborghini and Bentley dealership.

“We’ve made every effort to adhere to the Audi corporate style, even ensuring that all the surfaces and equipment were in grey, black and silver, against the white walls,” says Mr Antliff.

Stocks Equipment specialist Shaun McGowan sat down with Giltrap fixed operations general manager Tony Coutinho more than a year ago to discuss the type of equipment required for this dealership. Stocks were able to supply the required equipment to match the specifications and standards demanded for this development.

Shaun McGowan oversaw the installation of this equipment to make sure everything was completed on time, and to the client’s exact requirements.

“This is a major achievement for Stocks, and we are very proud, that they chose us as their preferred supplier on this $20 million dealership,” says Stocks Equipment division general manager William Singleton.

The Giltrap technicians had already been using two and four post hoists from American manufacturer, Rotary, and were very impressed with its quality and performance. So the decision was made to use Rotary two-post hoists in this new dealership. These were supplied in the OEM required colours - Grey, with Stain Black lifting arms, to match the new workshop environment.

Rotary is the largest manufacturer of vehicle hoists in the world, and pioneered the development of modern vehicle hoists back in the early 20th century.

The ten Rotary hoists supplied to the new Audi Terminal workshop are the 2-post SPOA10S5G5 model, certified to safely lift up to 4.5 tonnes. These hoists feature asymmetrical 3-stage front and 2-stage rear arm coverage and come with standard polymer adaptors that thread up or can have the optional stackable inserts. This model comes standard with 3-phase (415 Volt) connection, but can be ordered as a single phase model.

Because these Rotary 2-post hoists are baseless, they provide clear floor space for technicians to work unimpeded, adding to the greater sense of space within the workshop.

Mr Antliff says the workshop was also designed with extra width, and together with the compact hoist dimensions it adds up to a more relaxed and safer working environment for his staff – which also leads to a happier workforce. And why wouldn’t they be happy, with a pool room and soon-to-be delivered pool table, along with a spacious lunch/coffee break facility for them to relax.

In an adjoining building, the Rotary SM40-47A 4.0 tonne, 4-post wheel alignment hoist, which incorporates a 2.0 tonne Danish-made jacking beam, has been set up with the very first Hunter OEM V.A.G wheel aligner system, to be installed in this country.

This aligner has been designed especially by Hunter for the Volkswagen Audi Group and is based on the latest technology in wheel alignment today.

The Hunter Hawkeye digital imaging wheel alignment system, which incorporates a specially developed Win-Align software package designed to meet VAG’s specific requirements. It includes information on all VAG group models and guides the technician through the set-up and operation procedures.

It operates with the same high definition digital cameras as the Hunter Hawkeye to continuously measure wheel target position and orientation, which provides the same alignment measurements as conventional sensors. Unlike delicate electronic sensors used in other systems at the wheel, the Hunter targets are robust and can be dropped without causing damage. There are no moving parts in the entire system and it is virtually maintenance-free.

A key element is Hunter’s electronic ride height measurement system, which is now standard on

all Hunter Hawkeye wheel aligners. It reduces the amount of time taken to measure and enter date by automating the procedures as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Accurate to one millimetre, ride height measurements are displayed instantly and do away with manual measuring. Audi technicians enjoy working with this machine because it is so quick, accurate and easy to set up.

This system also includes the Hunter radar alignment system for VAG vehicles equipped with ADR, ACC, LDW and/or ADS, which require measurement and adjustment of these systems whenever vehicle alignment is adjusted.

With its comprehensive equipment, the new Audi Terminal dealership is able to provide a complete in-house service to its customers, not just mechanical repairs and maintenance.

Standing with the new VAG/Hunter wheel aligner on the Rotary 4-post hoist

LED load resistors overcome flasher problems

The introduction of LED technology has been a boon for car, truck and equipment makers and drivers, with their longevity and low current draw being major advantages.

However, their low current draw can actually cause new problems in the electrical system.

resistors that overcome problems relating to load sensitive flasher systems, commonly caused where low current LED lamps have been fitted.

The best solution is to fit a non-load sensitive flasher or a flasher with a measured load matching the LED load, but this is not always practical, as many flashers are built into the vehicle’s onboard computer.

The purpose-built Narva LED load resistors are a simple and effective solution to this issue, replacing the load that has been reduced by fitting LED lamp replacements for standard incandescent lamps.

Suitable for direction indicator and brake light circuits, LED load resistors are designed to draw the same current as a 21 watt incandescent globe, correcting any problems with low current draw.

Built into an aluminium heat sink housing, the new load resistors are supplied with two wire tap connectors and 300mm of cable at each end. They should be mounted on a heat resistant metal surface connecting the earth to the chassis and the indicator wire with the wire taps supplied.

Narva LED Load Resistors 90034BL (12V) and 90036BL (24V) are now available from lautomotive outlets throughout New Zealand.

When converting incandescent lamps to LED the flasher may not recognise the LED lamp as it relies on a load to detect ‘globe outage’, resulting in fast flashing indicators or triggering a warning lamp on the dash.

Narva has introduced 12 and 24 Volt LED load

Tyreplus arrives in New ZealandTyreplus is an independent network of tyre retail

stores that was established in 2002. It is currently present in Australia, China, Thailand, Russia, India, Taiwan and Mexico.

Now the brand has arrived in New Zealand with the September opening of two Tyreplus stores in Hamilton.

Tyreplus retail stores will offer Michelin and BFGoodrich tyres as part of a complete range of tyre products in addition to tyre repairs, wheel balancing and wheel alignment.

In a first for the brand, Tyreplus in New Zealand will partner with Pedders Suspension, one of the market leaders in Australia.

Offering a comprehensive range of products for all suspension, braking, load carrying and steering needs to suit passenger cars, four-wheel drives, light commercial and performance vehicles, this partnership will offer a complete tyre and suspension service.

The New Zealand Tyreplus network will be supported by Michelin’s New Zealand distributor, Tyreline Distributors Ltd.

“The launch of Tyreplus will offer consumers quality products that they can trust and be provided products and services that benefit the customer long after the purchase,” says Tyreline Distributors managing director Grant Rushbrooke said.

“Customers will also be offered the information and services to get the best out of their tyres and know how tyres can affect their safety on our roads.”

Although New Zealanders are passionate about their vehicles there is still a lack of knowledge and education of the importance of tyres and how they can keep us safe on the road.

According to Rushbrooke, Michelin has always emphasised the importance of investing in research and development that enable them to produce tyres that offer benefits to the customer such as fuel efficiency and longevity as well as helping to reduce the impact we have on the environment.

“Michelin’s partnership with Tyreplus exemplifies their shared values and our commitment to provide consumers with quality and convenient solutions to meet the challenging demand of their vehicles,” he says.

Alvin and Jessica Cobb, owners of the two Hamilton Tyreplus stores, say they are privileged to have the opportunity to be the first to launch a Tyreplus store in New Zealand.

“The brand is recognised worldwide as providing excellent technical expertise and customer service thanks to Michelin’s reputation in the tyre industry, says Alvin Cobb

In addition to the Hamilton stores Tyreplus will be opening in other centres across New Zealand in the near future.

looks at the latest trends being adopted by

performance enthusiasts overseas, and talks

to local suppliers about the availability of

performance parts and accessories with a

recap from last year's feature on the legalities

of fitting them.

In case you weren’t aware of the latest trends being adopted by performance car enthusiasts overseas, ‘hellaflush’ and ‘stance’ are the biggest themes being adopted by this market segment.

If you aren’t familiar with this trend, google Stance Nation and all will be revealed. Incidentally we must point out that the term ‘hellaflush’ is not in any way related to the Hella brand of automotive and marine lighting.

A Google search brought up some interesting images and definitions regarding ‘hellaflush’ and ‘stance’.

According to www.urbandictionary.com there are two definitions for ‘hellaflush’and one for stance.

1) Hellaflush“When a car is fitted with insane offset and

camber so the wheel is ‘flush’ with the mudguard flare. Also includes slamming (lowering) the car so low that it is almost flush with the ground too.”

2) Hellaflush “Rims with a lot of offset, stretched tyres, and

negative camber so that it can sit flush with the fender. Rolled mudguards and slammed suspension so low that you can even get into a driveway. May not be very functional but definitely gets a lot of attention from everyone that sees you. Must have a lot of extra money for tyres.”

3) Stance(verb) - to adjust a car‘s camber, ride height,

and spacing, so that the sidewall of the tyre sits as

flush as possible with the mudguard/quarter panel. A common trend and a style impersonated on drift and show cars alike, originating from the older Japanese domestic market.

Suspension modifications

Dodson Performance sales manager Andy Wakelin says that the ‘stance’ trend is certainly opening the door for performance suppliers to sell adjustable suspension arms and wheel spacers but he warns that vehicles do need to have certification to run coil over suspension and that wheel spacers must be hub centric.

The fitting of aftermarket suspension and steering components generally does not require the vehicle to get a Low Volume Vehicle Certification (LVVC), unless those components constitute a significant departure from the OEM design, or are not specifically intended for a particular vehicle.

Modifications such as aftermarket adjustable suspension systems, wheel spacers and very low springs that reduce the vehicle’s structural ride height below 100mm ground clearance, usually fall foul of WOF conditions and are therefore subject to the provisions of a Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) inspection.

Any modification outside the WOF, which require a LVVC, may be challenged by the LVV inspector.

Impact of your vehicle

Many people wonder why we use precious

metals like Platinum and Iridium in our

spark plugs and you might be surprised

by the answer.

The phrase “achieving a longer service life”

is thrown around a little too often in the same

breath as precious metal spark plugs, but this

is just a misconception. High ignitability is the

core reason for using precious metals in

superior quality spark plugs.

High ignitability means that a spark plug can

ignite very lean air/fuel mixtures and this in

turn ensures the complete combustion cycle

occurs. The result is optimum fuel economy,

increased power and a reduction in the

level of emissions that an engine will expel.

This is a bonus as car manufacturers also

rely on precious metal spark plugs to help

reduce emissions.

Ok, it’s true that both platinum and iridium

spark plugs have higher melting and

oxidation points than the nickel electrodes

used in conventional spark plugs. This

certainly helps to increase service life and

is an added advantage to using precious

metal spark plugs, however the key reason

is the high ignitablity.

So the next time you install a set

of NGK Precious metal spark plugs,

use them for the right reason.

For example, the inspector may request the credentials of the person who did welding work, to establish the weld’s integrity. In addition, the work the technician does carry certain obligations:

The obvious issues surrounding modifications to are safety and legality. The failure of steering and suspension components can have serious consequences.

Unsafe modifications such as cut springs, which are often not retained in their seats, are a common cause of the police officials ordering

vehicles off the road. Even those people who perform

professional modifications should be aware that they can be liable for failures either commercially or criminally

In our performance feature last year Autolign product manager Kris Taunt said that any person who embarks on a program of significant performance modifications should consult a qualified company or person to ensure their requirements are actually feasible.

“Most people who go down the performance route will choose to use

an adjustable coil over kit which has a shock and spring package designed to work together for the specific chassis,” he says

“Many factory shock absorbers perform differently throughout the range of their stroke. When a vehicle’s ride height is lowered significantly it is often necessary for the shock to be shortened to suit - not only to retain spring captivity but to ensure a safe, comfortable ride and to avoid premature failure of the shock through bottoming out, “says Kris Taunt This is where the internal valving of the shock collides with the base of the shock body.”

Taunt recommended that with any vehicle modification to suspension or engines, it is wise to plan ahead and discuss the best ways of achieving the desired results with the necessary specialists before carrying out any work.

Engine modifications

An engine needs an optimal supply of air and fuel, the right condition for igniting this mixture to maximise the combustion process, and a fast, effective way to get rid of the burnt air-fuel mixture.

Because turbo chargers and re-chipping are subject to LVVC, it is much easier to be sure of knock-on effect and these modifications are therefore safer. However, breathing and fuel delivery modifications to

naturally aspirated cars that keep hp increase under 20 percent are trickier, because even these modifications have the potential to impact on the engine’s health and longevity.

Fuel control is critical in a high performance engine. But if things go even slightly awry in the combustion chamber, it can destroy an engine. Modifications to the breathing capacity and fuel delivery side, whether via modified carburettors or EFI systems, can easily unbalance the stoichiometric condition, which is dependent on exactly the right amount of air versus the exactly right amount of fuel versus the RPM, engine load, and engine temperature.

Too little air leads to a rich fuel mixture that burns incompletely and therefore does not release all the energy in the fuel. Too much air leads to a lean fuel mixture that burns too quickly, spends its energy too soon, and creates too much pressure too quickly. This can cause irreparable damage to the engine.

To adjust the EFI to suit a modified engine, the best - if expensive - option is to fit a fully programmable aftermarket ECU that allows the user to reprogram the ECU as changes are made.

However, reversion can neutralize the best efforts to optimize the first three strokes of the Otto cycle. The nature and degree of restrictions in outbound airflow, chiefly a function

of the exhaust header, the catalyst converter, and the muffler, will determine the degree of reversion.

Anti-emission legislation requires a catalyst converter on street cars, but fitting a free flow exhaust header and free flow exhaust mufflers, although subject to noise limits, can significantly reduce reversion.

A naturally aspirated car modified with a new exhaust system does not need LVVC, provided the 20 percent rule is honoured. In addition, the system must not be constructed or modified in a way that allows a person to interfere readily with its operation or reduce its effectiveness. Furthermore, if these modifications result in an increased noise output that is still clearly below noise limits as determined by the NZTA, a LVVC is not required.

Bilstein Shock Absorbers These German-manufactured

shocks are widely considered to be among the best shocks available in the market today according to Autolign.

Equipping some of the world’s most exclusive cars such as the Bugatti Veyron, Maybach limousine, Audi R8, Mitsubishi Evo and Nissan Skyline GTR, Bilstein’s motorsport-derived technology is highly sought after by vehicle manufacturers and tuning houses the world over. Aside from supercars, Bilstein also produces shocks for a wide range of vehicle applications, and are affordable. Using the proven performance mono-tube design its dampers can also be tuned, rebuilt and even custom built to suit almost any requirement by the country’s only authorised Bilstein service centre, Racelign.

Tein performance suspension

Tein was born on Japanese motorsport circuits, first in rallying and then successfully transferring its winning damping technologies to a wide range of tarmac, drifting and endurance events. With a high level of adjustability and tuning potential Tein shock absorber kits provide numerous options to both performance road cars and race cars alike. And like Bilstein they are completely serviceable by Racelign, providing long term confidence for users.

Whiteline handling solutions

According to Autolign the amount of money spent an upgraded sway bar provides more handling improvement than any other

suspension enhancement. The company says that better handling is about maximising grip on all four tyres and keeping those tyres upright because less roll increases grip.

A Whiteline sway bar reduces the lean as the dynamics hold the vehicle flatter to the road, increasing grip for improved handling.

Whiteline has developed a range of not only sway bars, but a variety of handling improvement products for popular performance vehicles including Imprezas and Evos, Skylines and Silvias, and also Falcons and Commodores.

Lubricants: The good, the bad and the ugly Robert Barry reviews the current

economic situation in the local

market and looks into the

relevant application of lubricant

to the end user.

For many customers who walk into a workshop, engine oil is coloured yellowish-brown when it’s first poured into the vehicle and its black when it comes out.

Unless they are a performance enthusiast or are particularly mechanically sympathetic, they may not understand the difference between a wholly mineral oil, semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic lubricant and why these have been developed for particular applications.

However there is also a new breed of customer who is a little more lubricant savvy thanks to the consumer marketing process and the public relations carried out by some of the oil manufacturers. These clients also present a challenge to the workshop as far as educating them as to what they really need as opposed to what they perceive they need for their vehicle.

Of course if a customer insists on using a high quality – high grade lubricant that presents a good margin for the workshop – a technician is highly unlikely to talk them out of paying for it, even if it exceeds the manufacturers specifications.

The New Zealand car park is one of the most highly complex in the world thanks to the removal of restricted import licence, vehicle tariffs, and the closure of local assembly in the 1990s. This presents a unique challenge to the motor industry, the oil industry and the consumer.

More than 20 years of new and secondhand vehicles being imported

and used by consumers has left the mechanic with a variety of engine and emission technologies that a 200L drum of multigrade mineral oil is no longer applicable to most of them.

You wouldn’t put petrol in a diesel engine, so why allow an uninformed customer to use an inferior lubricant? Leave price out of the equation, because with a little explanation about composition and grades they can leave the workshop with confidence that the technician is looking after the best interest of their engine and wallet.

Chemical, oil and consumable category manager for Repco, Tony Hebden says he has noticed there is a stronger local market requirement for an entry level value offer lubricant as a lot of workshops concentrate on their cash flow. But equally he says that others are spending their budget across a variety of oil grades in smaller quantities of higher specialist grades to meet consumer demand and vehicle requirements.

Hebden says that rather than buying a bulk 200L drum of oil, savvy workshop managers are buying smaller 60L and 20L drums of product and spreading their investment in higher quality oil to be able to up spec and up sell to the client. Hence Repco offers a greater variety of grades and sizes to meet the marketplace.

Beware the DPF!

The advent of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in modern diesel passenger vehicles has not only forced workshop technicians to update their knowledge about these but to also educate their customers about the necessity to use the correct low-saps (low sulphur ash) lubricants in these vehicles.

Presenting such a vehicle to a franchise garage, or and

independent brand specialist may not be a problem for the motorist as these are more likely to have the specialist low saps lubricant in stock but it is the smaller independent operations who may not have the knowledge or lubricant on hand, much to their dismay.

Tony Hebden says that members of the Taxi industry for example are well known for their penchant to go for the lowest cost offer on lubricants and consumables when it comes to servicing their vehicles – unfortunately for some drivers, using the incorrect oil in their modern diesel vehicle fitted with a DPF has quite literally brought them to a halt.

Hebden says anecdotally the incidents of DPF equipped diesel vehicles coming to a halt due to incorrect oil use was quite significant.

Replacing a diesel particulate filter and getting the vehicle back on the road after such an incident is an expensive process that could have been avoided by using the correct lubricants and shows that choosing a cheap/inferior lubrication product is a false economy.

Marketing directly to the motorist

Taking consumer concerns to the product specification and identity of lubrication is another marketing trend that workshops have to contend with. In Australia, Castrol has launched a product called Magnatec 5W-30 fuel saver, which is marketed on its website, along with a lubrication guide and technical specifications.

While it is common knowledge that quality engine oil will reduce friction and improve engine efficiency in conjunction with other service consumables in a well maintained vehicle, to our knowledge this is the first time an oil company has openly marketed its lubrication product as a fuel saver.

And the trend by the large oil companies to persuade consumers to demand higher quality oil products will grow through the use of website and viral marketing. The knowledgeable “do it for me” consumers will become the pull factor in lubrication consumption rather than the historic push factor from the workshop.

At a retail level oil is fast becoming a fast moving consumer good (FMCG) as many oil suppliers

encourage motorists to trade up to a premium product rather than use the oil specification actually needed for their vehicle. Hence a new generation of savvy consumers are entering the workshop armed with the knowledge of what they think they need for their vehicle.

Generally New Zealand workshops can be divided into three tiers when it comes to oil consumption which reflects their choice in price, quantity and quality for the end user:

The entry level tier – such as one man band workshops and small transient operations in lower socio economic areas which often purchase bulk low quality oil from wherever they can source it.

The mid level tier – larger long-established workshops many with a long heritage in the immediate area, often run by family members or business partners. These are the workshops who will often use mid to high quality lubricants from independent suppliers such as Repco, Gulf Western, and Penrite.

The top tier – OEM Franchise operations in high volume traffic areas in metropolitan regions who are

Get the best from your oil...

often than not tied to OEM approved brands such as Castrol, Mobil, Shell, and Total. Some franchises even have their own OEM branded oil.

In Tony Hebden’s personal opinion for all workshops and particularly those in the lower tier to compete solely on price-driven product is a self-defeating prophesy. Often these businesses are buying solely on price and switching to whichever brand is cheapest at the time.

Hebden says he has noticed that although the mid tier operations are shrinking, 25 to 30 percent of that particular market are trading up to a better class of oil and are re-inventing themselves to attract a better type of customer and remain profitable.

The current economic market has challenged the traditional paradigm for mid-tier and also some top tier workshops where once upon a time the management just relied upon forward bookings from a loyal customer database and a full worksheet.

Now they have to consider how to market themselves and their services to potential customers. Many of the mid tier businesses particularly are choosing a premium brand of oil to

align themselves to and promote their business and to offer more specialist service to discerning customers such as the new generation of brand aware consumers who are tuned into the Internet and other media.

Customer choice

There is a strong resistance amongst the majority of New Zealand workshops to accepting labour-only work where the client supplies the lubricant and consumables for the workshop to use on their vehicle.

However, the situation on the other side of the Tasman is quite different where this practise is quite readily accepted, mainly because the aftermarket consumables needed for lubrication services are more easily accessed by the motorists.

This behaviour presents a challenge to New Zealand workshop owners who have traditionally relied upon the profit margin on lubricants and consumables. There are some workshops which will provide labour-only services, and there is a school of thought that some business is better than no business at all.

Oil composition guideEngine oil is made up of selected

base oils combined with additives to improve the original properties of base oils, impart new performance characteristics and extend the products life according to Mobil.

Engine oils typically are 75-85 percent base-stock with the balance being additives. That’s why base-stock quality is such a critical contributor to the performance of the final blended product.

According to Mobil there are four different types of base-stock used in the engine oil market. Group 1: Conventional - Mineral oil

derived from crude oil Group 2: Hydro-processed - Highly

refined mineral oil Group 3: Severe hydro-processed -

Ultra refined mineral oil Group 4: Fully synthetic. Chemically

built polyalphaolefins (PAO).The base-stocks of Groups 1 to 3

are derived from crude oil pumped from the ground whereas Group 4 base-stocks are chemically derived, most often from ethylene gas, and contain none of the contaminants present in mineral oils.

According to Mobil additives enhance the performance of engine oil base-stocks and help adjust the performance of the oil to suit its intended application. Additives are

the key to unlock the performance potential of base-stocks but even the best additives won’t turn bad oil into good oil.

Some common additives include: • Viscosity index improvers which

improve ability to handle heat and severe conditions

• Pour point depressants which lower oil freezing point in cold conditions

• Anti-wear additives which protect against metal-to-metal contact

• Detergents and dispersants that keep components clean and prevent sludging

• Oxidation inhibitors which maintain oil stability over service intervals

• Corrosion and rust inhibitors that protect against the effects of condensation

• Defoamants which prevent oil foaming and cavitationMobil says that additives work

symbiotically with the base stock and are added in different proportions according to the application. Some examples are that racing oils may not require rust inhibitors but could need extra defoamants for dry sump oil systems, domestic or some consumer engine oils may need special additives that don’t interfere with the operation of catalytic converters or diesel oils may require additional protection against combustion by-products.

Conventional engine oils use base-stocks created by refining crude oil pumped from the ground. Crude oil is a complex mix of hydrocarbon compounds and a variety of sophisticated refining techniques are used to remove/reduce the amount of undesirable components such as asphalts, waxes and chemically unstable sulphur and nitrogen compounds. Conventional motor oils use conventional mineral base stocks so are usually known as mineral oils according to Mobil.

Mineral base oils have performance limitations according to Mobil. After refining what remains is a lubricating base-stock that despite the degree of chemical refinement still contains undesirable materials such as oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen compounds, trace metals and carbon residues.

Mobil says there are literally thousands of compounds present in crude oil. While many of them are removed or upgraded by refining, a significant concentration of these undesirable materials remains in lubricating oil base stocks. These residual undesirable materials mean additive packs can’t operate to full effect because the additive has to compete for space with the impurities when they attempt to bond with the base-oil molecules. Consequently the molecular structure of the oil is inconsistent, limiting the performance capabilities and useful service life of the resulting blended oil.

pure chemicals. Since synthetic base stocks such as PAO are essentially pure chemicals themselves they avoid the performance limitations imposed by the impurities present in conventional and hydro-processed base oils. PAO synthetic base oils are therefore pure compounds containing none of the impurities found in conventional base oils derived from crude oil, as mentioned earlier.

In addition it says that chemically derived synthetic base stock technology allows the base oil molecules to be designed specifically for particular lubrication applications with purpose designed features such as the exact desired viscosity, superior viscosity stay in grade capability, low volatility etc. Synthetic base stocks can also be specifically tailored to suit different additives required for different applications. Additionally Mobil says because synthetic oils are ‘pure’ they contribute lower emissions and are kinder to catalytic converters. Synthetic oils can also be engineered to have less internal molecular friction allowing an engine to develop maximum power and provide best possible economy.

Unlike base oils derived from crude oil, Mobil says that synthetic base oils can be designed specifically to give optimum performance in synergy with the additive compounds with which they are formulated to produce the final product.

Hydro-processed OilMobil says hydro-processed motor oils use

base stocks made by the additional refining of mineral oil. While refined to a greater extent than conventional mineral base oils, hydro-processed base oils still have similar performance limitations due to the presence of undesirable impurities which cannot be completely removed from crude oil. Hydro-processed motor oils use extra refined mineral base stocks.

Severe Hydro-processed OilSevere hydro-processed oils are further refined

hydro-processed oils but they still contain some undesirable impurities which cannot be completely removed according to Mobil. Most engine oils on the market advertised as synthetic use severe hydro-processed base-stocks.

Semi-SyntheticsSemi-Synthetics use base stocks comprising

conventional or hydro-processed base oil in combination with severely hydro-processed or synthetic (PAO) base-stocks says Mobil. The proportion of severely hydro-processed or synthetic base-stocks in semi-synthetic oil is a closely guarded secret, but is usually between 10 percent and 25 percent.

SyntheticsAccording to Mobil, synthetic motor oils contain

a high proportion of base stocks created from REAdER REPly 110924

Oil supplier guide Gulf Western

Gulf Western says its lubricants are formulated for local conditions using only highly refined virgin base oils and PAO synthetics, incorporate the latest additive technology and offer the highest level of wear protection.

The comprehensive range of products are all guaranteed to comply with their quoted specifications and warranted to meet or exceed the applicable API, SAE and CMA performance requirements.

Gulf Western says its technical advances in lubricant design have been helped thanks to involvement in motorsports such as V8 Supercars and Top level Dragsters. This has allowed Gulf Western to test its products in the most extreme environments that an engine, gearbox or differential can be used in.

The Gulf Western range of Diesel engine oils includes, mineral, semi synthetic, and full synthetic grades. The most popular grades are found in the Top Dog range, with products meeting the latest specifications required for American, Japanese, and European manufacturers. The Gulf Western CI4+ grades meet the demanding requirements for new generation engines fitted with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) emission control systems. The range also includes mono grades for (two stroke Detroit Diesel) and low detergent lubricants.

Gulf Western’s New Zealand distributor Automotive Supplies NZ Ltd has been rapidly expanding its network of outlets with the offer of

more personal service, local availability and competitive pricing

Gulf Western says it commenced operation in 1988 and currently manufactures over 25 million litres of high performance lubricants per year in its ISO 9001 certified blend plant.

Gulf Western’s National Sales Manager Ross Tubnor says he is continually overwhelmed by customers’ preference to use high performance products which are locally formulated, manufactured and sold by companies which are locally owned.

With a loyal customer base comprising car enthusiasts, large transport companies, Earthmoving, mining and farmers, and supported by distributors in both islands and regional centres, Tubnor says this customer focused company continues

to grow in a tough New Zealand market place.

Penrites extra ten

Have you ever wondered what the words ‘Extra ten’ on a Penrite product actually mean? These appear on the labels of Penrite lubrication products, but what do they mean to your customer or more importantly your customer's vehicle?

Every multigrade engine oil has two numbers quoted in its SAE viscosity rating. A ‘W” for start up viscosity and a second number for operating temperature. For example SAE 15W-40.

If the first W number is held constant, (so that the viscosity is the same at a given start up temperature) then the higher the second number, the slower the oil thins out as temperature increases. So, a SAE 15W-50 oil will thin out slower than a SAE 15W-40. Oil always gets thinner as temperature increases, it is only the rate of thinning out that changes.

Most engines today are manufactured and developed overseas where allowances for lower ambient start up temperatures have to be made and will not necessarily see extended periods of very high temperatures. If a manufacturer requires a SAE 5W-30 in those conditions, Penrite says in Australia and New Zealand, that a SAE 5W-40 is more appropriate. Why? Because the oil film is a little thicker and hence that helps protect against wear of moving parts at operating temperatures. Penrite has moved the second number up one viscosity grade in its premium engine oils and that is what it calls the Extra 10. SAE 5W-30 becomes SAE 5W-40, SAE 10W-40 becomes SAE 10W-50 and so on.

What does the Extra Ten give your customer and your customer’s

vehicle? Greater protection at operating temperatures. That equals peace of mind according to Penrite.

Speedshow voted a huge success

Car and bike fans voted with their wallets with nearly 24,000 people attending this year’s CRC Speedshow in Auckland.

The 2011 show marked the fifth year for the annual celebration of autos and motorsport and, as happened last year, visitor numbers increased by about 20 percent over the previous year’s figure.

Speedshow was developed by Auckland-based former top racing driver Keith Sharp who runs the event with the support of a small team.

“This years show was fantastic from start to finish,” says Sharp. “We have a tremendous group of exhibitors who all made a great effort to offer Speedshow visitors an amazing variety of special vehicles on display.

“It was also an honour to have Shane van Gisbergen join us this year,” says Sharp. “The V8 Supercar Championship is one of the most-watched motor racing series for Kiwi fans and with Shane’s increasing success, winning his first race in Hamilton this year and following up with another win in Darwin, many fans made the most of the chance to meet him in person.

With the show sold out, every metre of the ASB

Showground featured a car, a bike or people, technology and equipment connected with automobiles and motorsport.

“The 2011 CRC Speedshow has been a fantastic experience, one that underlines the passion Kiwis have for their cars and for all things automotive,”

the recommended oil – peace of mind in a matter of seconds,” says McEwan.

“We’re the first such company to offer this kind of service in this country. We also ran a ‘wheel of fortune’ with each correct spin earning the ‘spinner’ a free pack of engine oil suitable for their car. I think making our display interactive was really very important and really adds to the whole experience for Speedshow visitors.”

With Speedshow covering a broad spectrum of motorsport-related activities, the Auckland Car Club and sister organisation The Motorsport Club enjoyed the chance to raise awareness of their clubs’ activities.

“The Auckland Car Club offers a range of motorsport events for all ages, from racing for modified production cars to the Manukau Institute of Technology motorsport class where students build and race a car in a series we run for them,” says president Bob White. “It’s great to have the chance to tell people about the competitions and club-oriented activities we organise.”

Other highlights of the 2011 CRC Speedshow included the Minister of Transport Hon. Steven Joyce unveiling the Lotus Renault Formula 1 car and a brand-new BNT V8 race car, with both occasions attracting hundreds of people.

The Ezybuy Car Auction live action arena is always a highlight with stars from the D1NZ drifting series providing high octane excitement alongside the classic Mini motokhana and the smoking Big Ben Wildcard stunt Utes.

says Castrol marketing manager Jayne McEwan. “We talked to a huge number of people and everyone loved the show and what we had on display.”

“Speedshow really taps into an audience that loves motorsport and enjoys checking out the products available from companies like Castrol that are associated with the sport in all its shapes and forms.

“The coolest thing we did at this year’s show was the launch of our new text service for car owners who are not sure what engine oil to use in their cars. People can text their car’s make and model to our technical department and receive a reply giving them

Hundreds more fans lined up for autographs from the drivers including Kiwi V8 racing legend Greg Murphy who is confirmed for the new V8SuperTourer series.

“Competitions were run, simulators were raced, specially-priced products were sold and fans went home happy,” says Sharp.

“Now we’re already thinking about key attractions for the 2012 event which is scheduled to take place over the weekend of 21 and 22 July, again at the ASB Showgrounds.

Bosch launches new test bench

Launching the EPS 708 test bench in early June was a big deal for Bosch Australia as it was one of the first countries in the world to launch the EPS 708 to the diesel market.

Bosch says it has been very well received by diesel workshops as it is a standalone piece of equipment that is reasonably small, easy-to-use and quick to set up.

With injection pressures on most modern common rail diesel engines around the 2000 bar and rising this new bench is the ‘benchmark’ and capable of pressures of up to 2500 bar. If pressures upward of 2500 come about, kits

can be designed to extend its capability so this piece of equipment will not become obsolete in the near future.

The EPS 708 diesel test bench is specially designed for testing most popular brands of common rail pumps and injectors including Bosch, Denso, Siemens and Delphi. Warranty evaluations are also possible for Bosch components.

The working area of the test bench is covered by a robust hood, providing protection for the operator. As a result, a coupling cover for the drive mechanism is no longer required. This reduces the set-up time for pump assembly even further while increasing operator safety. The test bench motor cuts out immediately if the hood is raised during operation.

Bosch is the first manufacturer in the world to introduce a retrofit package for workshop diesel testing to determine variations between individual injections through shot-to-shot deviation measurement. In comparison with conventional measuring systems this new procedure extends the test scope to cover specific fault scenarios.

The technique renders multiple tests unnecessary and avoids repeated removal and installation of the vehicle’s injectors.

Around 25 percent of common rail diesel engines in passenger cars are now fitted with Piezo injectors so Bosch has released the CRI Piezo test set for the EPS 708 and 815.

In addition to leakage tests and

injection measurements for different engine operating states, the test set can be used to monitor coupler filling and check the Piezo module for insulation faults.

A new multi-clamping system for injectors reduces set-up times and enables flexible, precise working. Up to four common-rail injectors for commercial vehicles or six solenoid or Piezo common-rail injectors for passenger cars can be clamped to the EPS 708 at the same time. The multi-clamping system features a universal injection chamber for injectors as well as fast-action clamping. Its innovative design offers workshops many practical advantages, such as leak-free assembly of commercial vehicle injectors and cushioning of the individual injectors to protect the test pressure lines.

Injection quantities are measured electronically, while the pressure feed for the pump and lubricant supply is also regulated electronically. Service intervals for test oil or filter replacement are monitored and displayed electronically.

Additionally, the self-diagnostic system of the test bench provides the workshop with reliable information concerning unscheduled servicing requirements, such as an additional filter change.

Hydraulic components are protected from contamination by an integrated filter in the new high-pressure rail. The rail is also equipped with an integrated cooling system to maintain a low temperature during continuous testing.

Glowing on the Inside

Motorists expect their diesel-powered cars to start immediately on the first turn of the key or press of the start button. The DuraSpeed ceramic glow plug developed by Bosch meets those demands with a sensationally short heat-up time.

Bosch says this is one of the fastest glow plugs on the market. Even at extremely low ambient temperatures down to minus 28 degrees Celsius, it reaches its peak temperature of 1300 degrees Celsius in less than two seconds. This heating power makes the DuraSpeed particularly suited to use in state-of-the-art diesel engines.

As well as delivering maximum heat-up performance, a glow plug must also keep glowing to provide post-heating for a long time. This reduces cold idling noise and enhances ride comfort. DuraSpeed is a marathon-runner in every respect as it can maintain a constant glow temperature level of 1200 degrees Celsius for 3000 operating hours.

Together with the modular glow control unit (GCU) and specific glow software, the DuraSpeed plays a key role in cutting emissions when warmed-up as part of the flexible glow system (FGS).

The ceramic material of the DuraSpeed has a high basic strength. Moreover, the patented flexible design smoothes out minor errors and guarantees safe handling when installing. Even if jammed, the tip of the glow plug will not break, but is designed to give in a flexible way. However, the glow plug should not be used again if it was in any way damaged.

New LuK travel adjusted clutch (TAC)

Heavy commercial vehicles demand clutch systems which are designed for high mileage and a long-life. It is not uncommon for a clutch to last for more than 600,000 kilometers in a short haul application, and for more than a million kilometers in long distance applications.

Vehicles working on construction

sites also demand a clutch with greater wear-resistance because of the amount of maneuvering. Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket has just introduced the LuK Travel Adjusted Clutch (TAC) to market, which it says delivers nearly twice the wear-reserve of conventional clutch systems.

Besides demanding high levels of wear-resistance, many commercial vehicles use automatic shift gearboxes (ASG) with clutch boost controllers that require a flat clutch-pressure curve for clutch control.

The LuK Travel Adjusted Clutch (TAC) precisely meets the requirements of such applications. The adjustment process is initiated by the TAC measuring the distance during clutch engagement and disengagement.

When the distance between the pressure plate and flywheel changes the axial amount of change is translated to the adjusting ring by a spindle with a directly-coupled pinion gear. Compensation follows with constant finger height between the pressure plate and the diaphragm spring. And because the entire adjustment mechanism is found on the pressure plate, distortion

or torsion forces have no influence on the quality of adjustment. The advantage here is that the TAC has a minimum wear range of 6 mm – almost twice as large as that of conventional clutch systems.

The LuK Travel Adjusted Clutch is scheduled to be available to the global market in by the end of 2011. Designed for use as original equipment and approved by a leading global commercial vehicle manufacturer, it will be available in a 430 mm version in original-equipment quality. The TAC is produced by LuK Truck parts in Kaltennordheim, Germany. The first repair sets will consist of precisely matched individual TAC components, clutch disc and release bearing – and will initially be available for DAF and Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles and Mercedes-Benz buses.

The true cost of ownership

Buying low-quality lubricants can be a false economy. Lubricant costs can be as little as 1 to 2 percent of the total maintenance

costs, but can have a disproportionate effect on machine availability and production.

At Shell Lubricants, an international network of experts is dedicated to developing performance products that can help to reduce maintenance requirements and energy use, and therefore, lower customers overall costs.

Rimula products can help reduce costs by:• Extending longer oil drain intervals • Resisting breakdown for longer periods of time, even under extreme temperatures• Reducing emissions, fuel consumption and waste disposal• Protecting against acids, deposits, heat and engine wear• Reducing maintenance and labour costs • Lowering operating temperatures• Helping control blockage of exhaust filters and traps.

For example, one of Pakistan’s longest-established operations of long-haul trucks was having to change the oil in its fleet every 3,000km and wanted to increase in the oil-drain interval without compromising the condition of the engines. Trials showed that using Shell Rimula R3 X in the haulier’s truck engines could safely extend the oil-drain intervals from 2,000 to 5,000km. The company opted to use Shell Rimula R3 X across its fleet of 45 vehicles and reported a total annual cost saving of nearly NZ$60,000 a year.

Plastics fabrication and repair welding

The use of plastics is increasing rapidly. A new vehicle that rolls of the production line today, has more than 350 kgs of plastics on board - and with manufacturers taking steps to improve fuel economy, we are likely to see the use of plastics to increase further.

Techspan’s tech tips will help guide you in achieving a good understanding of the Plastic Welding process. These tips will provide you with new tips and techniques on how to get your plastic fabrication and repairs right first time.

In this months issue we cover plastic welding applications.

Welding of rigid plastic

There are a vast range of applications where rigid plastic welding is being used. Here is a list of the most common applications by related industry sector.

Automotive: • Front and rear bumpers • Front bonnet grilles• Air intake grilles• Radiator header tanks• Rear view mirrors • Heating and air conditioning ducts• Mirror housings• Head lamp housings• Water reservoirs• Decorative trim• Door pockets• Facias and fittings• Exterior door panels• Motorcycle fairing and guard repairs• Quad bike repairs

Tank Fabrication:• Exterior Construction• Internal baffling and lining • Y branch and fittings • Leak repairs • Tank modifications Industry:• Conveyor belt fabrication and repairs• Containment vessel fabrication and repairs• Safety guard fabrication and repairs • Chemical tank liner fabrication• Fume hood fabrication• Plastic part assembly

Welding of flexible plastics

The Techspan hand-held plastic welding tool can also be used in applications involving flexible sheet welding, with the addition of two accessories. A wide slot or fish tail nozzle is fitted to the welding tool and a high temperature silicone pressure roller is used. The wide slot nozzle can be placed between the overlap of the flexible sheets and the silicone roller is used to apply pressure, forcing the now molten materials together.

These applications include:• Fabrication and repair of tarpaulins, covers, banners• Waterproof membrane welding • Geomembrane welding • Landfill liner fabrication • Pond liner fabrication • Truck and rail curtain-sider fabrication and repairIn a number of these applications, a Techspan

automatic welding machine can also be used. The Tarpon and Planon automatic welders are designed to allow accurate and fast welding of a range of flexible sheet welding applications.

There are also a range of other uses that the Techspan hand tools can be used for, which are not related to welding simply by the application of heat from the hot air tool which include:

Will Evans make it to F1?Bernard Carpinter reports on the rise and rise of Mitch Evans in open wheeler racing.

Mitch Evans is now New Zealand’s best hope of getting another driver into Formula One, and he is certainly on the right track at the moment to achieve that lofty aim.

Evans, who recently turned 17, is racing in the GP3 championship, which is a support category for F1 at the European circuits so he is already learning many of the great tracks of the world. He started very impressively and led the championship for a while, but then dropped back after a run of bad luck.

Theoretically GP3 is two steps down from F1, with GP2 in between, although there are other high-level series like Formula Renault 3.5.

The GP3 cars have four-cylinder turbo engines and are a lot faster than the Toyota Racing Series cars he has campaigned in New Zealand, Evans says.

And Evans has an F1 connection. He is mentored by top F1 Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber, who came very close to winning the championship last year, and he is driving for MW Arden, the team co-owned by Webber. Their association began early last year.

I met Mitch for the first time at last year‘s [2009] Australian Grand Prix and was amazed at how switched on he was at the age of just 14, said Mark Webber.

At this very early stage he is displaying all the right ingredients and characteristics to be successful at the highest level. It‘s really important that he chooses his

next steps carefully and I‘m looking forward to playing my part by using my own personal experiences and contacts to make the move as seamless as possible.”

Evans is an intelligent and remarkably mature young man. He communicates well and he keeps a level head; he doesn’t get carried away when he wins and he doesn’t spit the dummy when things go wrong, as they often do in motor racing.

Last year Evans contested the Australian F3 championship and came close to winning it although he had to miss one round. He also spent some time in Europe with Webber, training with him and seeing how top-level motor racing operates.

As well, of course, Evans has also won the last two Toyota Racing Series. Last year he had a long hard struggle with Kiwi international Earl Bamber before achieving a narrow victory but this year he totally dominated the series, in spite of an influx of fast young drivers from overseas. These included Russian Daniil Kvyat, who is part of Red Bull’s development squad.

Evans comes from a racing family. His father Owen used to race very fast turbo Porsches and made national headlines when a land record attempt went very wrong – his car was destroyed and the driver was lucky to survive. Mitch’s older brother Simon is also a successful racer, driving a Porsche last summer.

This is the second season of GP3 and many of the

30 or so drivers are returning after contesting the 2010 series, which gives them a considerable advantage because of their experience with the cars and the tracks.

Nevertheless the young Kiwi was quickly on the pace. At the first pre-season test session at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, he was second fastest in the afternoon session. He remained a front-runner in further tests at Silverstone and Barcelona.

The GP3 season started in Turkey in May. Evans finished a solid sixth in the first race, which was won by Nigel Melker. Race two saw him run third early on, but he faded towards the end and dropped to seventh. Alexander Sims took the victory. A respectable start in such a big field, anyway.

Next came Barcelona – and at only his second GP3 meeting Evans qualified fastest to gain pole position for race one! He held the lead from the start and edged away to take a comfortable victory, nearly two seconds clear of James Calado. The second race at each meeting starts with the top eight finishers from race one in reverse order so Evans started under a handicap and fifth was a very useful result – one that put him in the lead of the series!. Hungarian Tamas Pal Kiss won that race.

Still in Spain, round three was at the Valencia street circuit. Evans qualified fourth and recorded finishes of third and fourth, which increased his series lead to six points from Melker. Winners were Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Calado.

Round four was at Silverstone and Evans qualified fourth – only to have the weather spoil his chances of another top result. Most of the field went out on slicks for the warm-up lap, but then sudden rain sent most of these into the pits at the end of the warm-up lap to change to wet tyres. Only 11 cars took their places on the start grid. Evans lost extra time as he had to queue behind his team-mate Lewis Williamson; the team pit could take only one car at a time. Tenth was all he could manage. The winner was Nico Muller.

In race two Evans started 10th but quickly shot through to fifth -- only to have his car stop with a mechanical failure. Williamson took the race and the Kiwi dropped to second in the series behind Sims.

At the Nurburgring in Germany Evans again qualified fastest and he led the first half of the race, before fate played another cruel trick on him. As the cars had formed up on the grid, light rain had begun to fall. Evans’ team and some others decided to switch their cars to wet-weather tyres – but they did not complete the change before the deadline, three minutes before the scheduled start of the race. So the officials called Evans and a few others in for a stop-and-go penalty in the pits, which ruined any chance of scoring points. He finished 20th, with victory going to Rio Haryanto.

That meant he had to start from 20th for race two, but a hot first lap moved him up to 12th. But then he took a hit from another car which caused a puncture, and he had to pit for a new tyre. The winner this time was Valtteri Bottas. Evans remained second in the series, thanks to the two points for pole position.

Next came Hungary, where Evans qualified third. But again disaster struck early as Evans tangled with another car on the first lap and had to retire. Bottas became the first driver to win two races in the series. Haryanto duplicated this feat in race two, while Evans advanced from 30th to 13th on a wet track but later damaged his suspension when he ran into the back of another car. He was now sixth in the series.

Meanwhile another Kiwi, Dominic Storey, also contested some of the GP3 rounds. Like Evans, he had experience in New Zealand’s Toyota Racing

Series and he showed good pace as he qualified 15th at Barcelona, but the races did not go so well for him.

For the final two rounds a third Kiwi was to join the series. Tauranga driver Richie Stanaway, 19, beat Evans to win the 2009 New Zealand Formula Ford championship and he has been going great guns in Germany. Last year he won the German Formula Masters championship and this year he is dominating their Formula 3 championship, winning nine of the first 12 races.

As a reward, Stanaway has been contracted by Gravity Sports Management to drive for leading GP3 team Lotus ART at Spa and Monza. He had tested with ART and gone very well, but he said there was no pressure on him to get top results at those events.

Also racing in the German F3 championship is Tom Blomqvist, who is the son of former world rally champion Stig Blomqvist and has spent most of his life in New Zealand; he holds dual British and New Zealand citizenship. After the first six rounds he stood fourth, with one victory to his credit.
