Online Simulations at UMUC

“The term motion graphics seems self explanatory. It is defined as graphical communication that incorporates movement over time. It encompasses a lot of different design disciplines, including moving type, film, digital video production, 3d and Flash animation and 3d and elements.”

Prevalent in advertisement spots and introductory program sequences and a lot of other places.

Graphic design and communication are pulling away from the printed page and embracing new technologies and the moving image, expanding their boundaries into areas not yet even explored.

Cost of Production Decreased Significantly over last Decade- Affordability of High quality DV cameras- Availability of Desktop Software : After Effects, Premier, Final Cut

Sia Academia – Kinetic Typography Movie

“I did this movie in my summer vacation over roughly a month. I layout all the type in Illustrator and animated the kinetics in Flash CS4. After that the Wiggle and the vignette was done in After Effects. Some of the illustrations like the shoe, did I do myself while others where found on the internet.”

Designer’s Skills and the Future of Motion Graphics

New Skill SetsAs new media has emerged, the convergence of different forms of audio, visual, and information technologies has become increasingly common.

Disciplines such as sound design, animation, computer programming and video editing are truly important for designers working with modern forms of communication to understand, and least on a fundamental level.

Graphic designers are already being called on to produce interactive user interfaces of all kinds, and in many cases, they must design their visuals to be accompanied with music and sound effects. Those that have been able to effectively apply their design skills to new media have been highly sought after.

New OpportunitiesLower cost / barrier of entry and the opportunities to publish cheaply via media sites, such as YouTube and Vimeo, will continue to encourage many more designers to have their talents shown.
