Faith and Family
This coming weekend we are hosting a marriage retreat weekend here at Forrest Park. I hope that you are planning on being a part of this. I know that it has the potential to not only impact your marriage but also your relationship with Jesus Christ. One of the things I have learned through the years is the correlation between how things at home and in one’s faith are going. If someone starts having trouble at home, it is usually a matter of time before they start having problems in their walk with God. If someone is struggling spiritually, those things have a way of trickling down to their family life. On the positive side, when people have faiths that are strong and growing, they tend to be thriving in their marital life. There is a direct connection.
In Ephesians 5 Paul is writing about the roles of husbands, wives, and the institution of marriage. As he is summing everything up, he writes in verse 32, “This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and church.” This chapter is not just about a Godly marriage. A Godly marriage is to be a reflection of Christ and his Church. It is one of the reasons that God created marriage in the form that he chose, “one man and one woman, for life.” We would all do well to ask how our marriage stands up as an illustration of the unity between Christ and his church. That is a humbling thought.
My role as a husband and father is a direct reflection of my faith. If I am not fulfilling those roles, then I am not fulfilling the will of God for my life. I need to grow in my faith (2 Peter 1:5- 7). One way I can do that is by growing as a husband and father (Ephesians 5-6). This is the will of God.
