Opportunities in Produce to Make

Mother’s Day Special• Mother’s Day isn’t typically a holiday with tremendous impact for Produce

but 2020 is a unique year.

• Celebrations will be “at home” and smaller gatherings than normal

meaning smaller packages and different items will be in demand

compared to a typical Mother’s Day.

• Focus on meal solutions, easy side items, and promotional ideas that

make at home celebrations and special meals simple to shop for and

simple to execute.

• Most shoppers are growing tired of food at home; display and promote

items that make today’s meal special. Berries for brunch, a special

breakfast, fresh seasonal fruit and dip, salad kits, gourmet potatoes, and

grilling vegetables as well as fresh value added vegetable items must be

in-stock for simple fresh meal prep made easy.

Produce needs for Graduation

through Father’s DayAs the calendar turns from May to June it is definitely grilling season! For Father’s Day

and Graduation the grilling vegetables will be in peak demand. Celebrations at home are

the perfect opportunity to enjoy a Certified Angus Beef steak with grilled corn and

asparagus!

• Stone Fruit season is peaking in May and June; by now all markets should have expanded

allocations of Stone Fruit varieties in all stores:

Yellow Peaches Red Plums Red Plumcots

White Peaches Black Plums Green Plumcots

Yellow Nectarines Apriums Donut Peaches

White Nectarines Apricots Plumcots

• Be sure to remember the organic options

• For an extra lift to sales add Mangoes to the display. Include Ataulfo and Honey Mangoes

• Optimize space for each variety item based on sales volume to ensure a tight turn. Full rotation with every fill will drive freshness!

• Each item should have 2/3 to 1 day sales on display to create frequent touches.

• Don’t forget Sweet and Rainer Cherries by mid to late May we are in full harvest.

Bouquets & Arrangements

This year we will be an opportunity for

new sales as shoppers focus on simple

easy to find gifts for Mother’s day.

• Capture these sales with gift ready

upgraded items that are clearly priced

and simple to shop. Think “grab and go”

versus service.

• Start with signage and thought starter

displays that showcase gift ready items.

• Fresh displays should start out smaller

and expand on Thursday May 7th

• Build small points of interruption with

dislocated displays in high traffic flow

areas for impulse purchases and cross

merchandise for a “gifting destination”

with general merchandise, gift box

candy, or health and beauty care.

• Don’t forget the impulse at the checkout

too

Creative Gifts

• Create theme gift baskets that

include a fresh potted floral gift!

• Make it even more special and use

our best Own Brand items!

Balloons

• Inflate all Mylar balloons by

May 1st .

• Include Mother’s Day balloons

and balloon bouquets at

checkout, in fresh bakery, and

at your gifting destination for

extra sales.

Floral for Mother’s Day

Outdoor

• Outdoor garden centers are restricted in many markets this year representing

a great opportunity for sales in our member stores.

With only 90 seconds on average to catch the shoppers attention as they

approach the store consider the following:

• Display product with great color break for impact and clearly price all product.

• Add a bow or pick to hanging baskets, ferns, and other patio pots for an easy upgrade and to create a gift ready item.

• Place fixtures close to store entrances where possible

• Keep wide aisle for social distancing and easy shopping.

• Water and condition product and displays frequently.

Floral Opportunities for Graduation

through Father’s DayWhile Father’s Day isn’t typically a primary Floral holiday this year

represents a new opportunity to capture sales with simple gift

giving display strategies.

• Create a small display with potted foliage, Euro gardens, add in some

Own Brands theme gift baskets and candy “bouquets”.

• Upgrade potted plants and gift baskets with masculine primary color

wraps, or use wood and earth tones and planters, a pick, theme bow,

and gift card if available is the finishing touch.

• Sign the display to inspire gift planning.

Bouquets

Since proms won’t happen in many areas with schools closed it is

important to adjust orders from prior years accordingly.

• Focus on fresh mixed flower bouquets at the $5-25 price point range.

• School colors will remain in demand for graduation celebrations that

take place to show off school spirit in this unique celebration season.

Balloons

• Start inflating Mylar balloons for Graduation around June 1st and on

June 10th for Father’s Day

• For graduation, local school colors will be in the highest demand.

• Create points of interruption for impulse purchases at the check out,

fresh bakery tables with Sweet P’s items and in the greeting card

section.

Graduation preparation: This year graduations may not happen in the

traditional manner we normally see; but shoppers will be looking for gifts

and smaller scale “at home” celebration ideas.

place and shoppers limiting trips it is a great opportunity for outdoor
