Industry Landscape:
The Opportunity:
Solution:
Client Background:A leading private bank in India established in Mumbai in 1994.
It has more than 1,000 branches in India with offices in London,
Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.
The banking industry depends on the backup diesel
generator for continuous power supply. Different states in India
have different electricity production and any shortage of
production results in frequent power failures.
The client has branches spread across India, both in urban and
rural areas. In case of power failure, every branch is prepared to
use a diesel generator. As different states have different power
production and power cuts, there are large variations in the use
of diesel by different branches.
The client’s maintenance team wanted to monitor the
actual electricity generated versus the diesel consumed by each
branch on a daily and weekly basis. They wanted to identify and
prevent diesel theft and pilferage, verify the correctness of
generator capacity, identify preventive maintenance schedule
based on the actual usage, and check the usage of a generator
outside work hours.
Problems faced by the client were strategically discussed
between MosChip’s technical team and the client’s maintenance
team to understand the pain points and derive the solution for
the same. MosChip’s technical team recommended installing a
remote generator monitor solution with features of fuel sensor,
energy meter, and remote monitoring.
GeoHEMS’ M2M (machine to machine) 24/7 monitoring solution increases the reliability of your generators by eliminating 95% of all Shutdown / Fail-to-Start situations
Implementation of Generator Monitoring System
a. Features of the GeoHEMs systems:
b. Reports:
• Single dashboard for monitoring the present state of all
diesel generator sets in all the branches.
• To monitor the energy parameters, MosChip installed an
energy meter to track energy usage along with the fuel
consumption every day.
• The client’s maintenance team received alerts such as fuel
filling, fuel removal, battery disconnect, low fuel level, low
load were reported immediately via SMS and email.
• History reports of the fuel, engine run hours, and energy
parameters were made available to the client.
• Downloading of the reports in a PDF or Excel format for
ease of reporting/sharing and analysis was also provided.
1. Energy health parameter report: Energy and Fuel
parameters are displayed on the advance monitoring page.
The user can view the real-time graphical data, or the his-
torical trends based on thecustom date selection.
2. Fuel Usage Report: This report shows the fuel
consumption, filling, and removal per day for each branch.
3. Operational Hours: Using the hour meter reader (HMR)
monitoring functionality of GeoHEMS, the maintenance
team can keep track of hours of operation, idle hours,
downtimes, and after work hours usage.
Benefits:• Know your spending on
fuel by having detailed analysis of fuel used, fuel filled and fuel removed!
• Know if DG is running on optimal load. Quickly identify under or over utilizations and hence get a better fuel economy for energy production.
• Reduce down time, by using GeoHEMS’s preventive maintenance program.
• Know generator overlapping hours in case mains power (grid power) is present and DG is still operating and save on unnecessarily wasted fuel.

1. The client’s in-house maintenance team could generate the monthly reports of the operational
hours and fuel filling per branch to verify the same against the branch audit.
2. The client observed that there was a disproportionate load distribution across the three phases.
Having a higher load on only one of the phases which are not advisable as it creates the risk of
wiring damage.
3. It is advisable to run diesel generator at least half capacity to get the best efficiency. With
GeoHEM’s energy health parameter on the dashboard, the client was able to identify that most of
the diesel generator sets were running at a low load and were not efficient. This information was
useful for the client to increase the load on the same diesel generator set without planning for
going for a newer diesel generator with a higher capacity.
4. Running low fuel leads to the airlock in fuel pipe which may halt the operation of the diesel genera-
tor. So low fuel alerts were useful for the maintenance team to take immediate action to rectify the
faults and avoid the stoppages of the diesel generator sets.
Business Impact:Post-installation, the client’s in-house maintenance team could remotely monitor the operations of the
diesel generator sets across all the branches.
