We all wage a daily battle with stress. I know firsthand how challenging it can be. Whether it stems from work, our personal lives, our finances or our health, life’s daily stresses - coupled with having to muster the energy needed to make it through each day - can feel overwhelming. Too much stress and not enough energy tends to create a sustained feeling of fatigue that can be depressing and debilitating.

If you live with constant stress, know you are not alone. Finding time to lessen stress levels, cultivate more energy and improve our health and happiness, can seem out of reach sometimes, right?

But not to despair! Today I share with you my 7 life changing morning rituals that reduce stress, increase energy, and improve overall quality of life.

All it takes to experience the benefits of this transformative morning routine is a sincere commitment to your well-being and carving out some time for self care.

Used primarily in ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is an ancient practice

with benefits that include:

✦ Enhancing gum and tooth health

✦ Alleviating stress and tension in the jaw

✦ Reducing bacterial growth in the mouth and

inflammation in the gums

✦ Stimulating digestion and boosting the immune system

Instructions: Measure one tablespoon of organic, food grade sesame or coconut oil.

Place the oil in your mouth and swish it around all sides of the mouth

and in between the teeth for 10 - 20 minutes, being careful not to swallow

any of the oil. When finished, spit the oil into a trash can. Avoid spitting it

into the sink or toilet, as this can cause a build up of oil, which may lead

to clogging. Rinse your mouth well using warm water then follow by

brushing your teeth. Cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil is my choice and I

also add one drop of Young Living Oregano Essential Oil to enhance

antimicrobial benefits. (Contact me if you would like to learn more about

The neti pot is an ayurvedic vessel designed to rinse debris and mucus from our nasal

cavities. Stress and tension can manifest as stagnant energy in our sinuses and toxins

can accumulate here as well. This can cause irritation, fatigue and unhappiness. Nasal

cleansing can help to remove some of the toxic build up and stuck energy. Other

benefits include:

✦ Cleanses and refreshes nasal passageways

✦ Minimizes allergy and sinus problems

✦ Reduces cold and flu symptoms

✦ Improves breathing

Instructions: Fill your neti pot with lukewarm filtered or distilled water and add a heaping 1/4

teaspoon of finely ground non-iodized salt. My choice is pink himalayan sea salt. Start

the ritual by tilting your head sideways over the sink and place the spout of the neti pot

in one of your nostrils. Breathing through your open mouth, gently pour the saltwater

solution into your nostril. The saltwater will drain through the opposite nostril while

flushing out toxins, debris and mucus. Refill your neti pot and repeat on the other side.

Make sure to rinse your pot after each use with water and leave to air-dry. Neti pots

are available in some pharmacies, health food stores and online.

Although we all know that staying hydrated is important to our health, studies

have shown the majority of us live in a constant state of dehydration. Since

70% of our bodies are comprised of water, a simple lack of hydration can

cause everything from fatigue to breakouts and accelerated signs of ageing.

That's why I prefer to start my day by drinking a big glass of warm water mixed

with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. Aside from being a good source of

Vitamin C and a great way to detoxify the system, lemon and lime juice also

help to balance pH levels in the body and assist in purifying the stomach and

liver, which in turn stimulates the gallbladder and the lymphatic system.

3. Hydration

Our bodies were meant to walk, stand, jump, and run. Unfortunately, many of

us live a sedentary lifestyle. We don't have to do a full workout every day, but

having a 10-15 minute exercise regime in the morning will boost metabolism

and shed any sluggishness that accumulated during the night. I start by

jumping on a trampoline for a few minutes to increase lymphatic flow,

followed by a yoga practice, which helps me to stretch and open up my

muscles and joints, boost energy levels, increase mental clarity and get my

circulation flowing smoothly before I take on the day.

Alternate nostril breathing, or nadi shodhana pranayama (as it’s called in Sanskrit) is

my favorite breathing technique. It’s simple, yet incredibly powerful. Each nostril is

linked to a different part of the brain and nervous system. Breathing through your left

nostril will instill a sense of calm, while breathing through the right nostril is

invigorating and energizing. I recommend doing 9 set rounds of alternate nostril

breathing every morning. Some of the benefits include:

✦ Balancing the right and the left hemispheres of the brain

✦ Creating a deep sense of physical, mental and emotional well-being

✦ Enhancing concentration and prepares the practitioner for

meditation

Instructions: Start in a comfortable seated pose. Place your left hand on your knee, palm open to

the sky and bring the tips of your index finger and the thumb in contact with each

other. Place the index and middle finger of your right hand on your forehead between

the eyebrows. Hold the right thumb over the right nostril and inhale deeply through the

left nostril. At the peak of inhalation, close off the left nostril with the little finger and

ring finger, then exhale through the right nostril. Continue the pattern, inhaling through

the right nostril, closing it off with the right thumb, and exhaling through the left

nostril.

Mediation is a practice anyone can do to improve their mental and emotional

health, and it can be done anywhere without special equipment. Just as there are

many different reasons to meditate, there are many different types of

meditation. For me, simply finding 5-10 minutes to sit quietly, unplug, close my

eyes and focus on my breath, allowing it to flow at its natural depth and speed,

can be enough to shift the tone of my day. Often times, stress can result from

focusing on the past or anticipating the future. Meditation takes us out of past

regrets and future worries and puts us into the present moment. It has helped

me to appreciate the now, and realize that much of our stress is unnecessary.

Journaling has been a positive outlet for expressing my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. For 5-10 minutes every morning, I sit down after my meditation and write out my intentions for the day. Through the act of consciously setting our intentions, they become more tangible and, are therefore more likely to manifest into reality. It’s an easy and deeply satisfying practice that requires just a few minutes each morning.

All in all, my 7 life-changing rituals for lessening stress and adding more energy to each day requires less than an hour. With a bit of dedication, you can easily integrate these self-care strategies into your schedule.

If it feels unrealistic to start with all 7 rituals at once, incorporate them slowly and steadily until you create a well-rounded routine that works for you. And remember; Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be patient, and you will be incredibly surprised! I know I was.
