The last 50 years of international experience has shown that development is not a package that can be delivered by the “developed” to the “underdeveloped” but a process in which entire populations must, in one way or another, participate. As Bill Gates has stated, “I’ve seen first-hand that local knowledge is critical.” Mona Foundation works to identify promising local educational initiatives at the grassroots and to accompany them long term to help them enact their plans. We acknowledge the innate capacity and inherent right of all peoples to become leaders in the process of their own development. The effect of this strategy of long term accompaniment has been dramatic. Several of our partner projects have built from quite humble beginnings to full-fledged, effective and recognized educational institutions.

A fundamental concern is the right of all people not only to have access to information, but to participate fully in the generation and application of knowledge. Transforming complex social realities requires the generation of new knowledge through dynamic and effective research and the participation of a great diversity of minds. Although in some cases processes may be set in motion through interventions from outside, they are managed by individuals and institutions of the region itself.

Mona’s History

We support initiatives that:

1) Focus on improving the social and economic life of the community as a whole, with an emphasis on women and girls.

2) Empower children to become agents of change and community citizens committed to serving humanity.

3) Are community led, have proven records of success and demonstrate a commitment to meeting the long-term needs of their community.

Mona Foundation supports grassroots educational initiatives around the world, which emphasize service to the community and increased opportunity for women and girls.

The board of directors scours the world to identify schools that meet our exact funding criteria. Since 1999, we have

granted $8 million to 34 educational initiatives in 16 countries, providing quality

education to more than 150,000 children and teachers in 2016.

Why Support Mona?

1

When girls are educated, they earn more and they spend their earnings on their families.

In developing countries, an extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10 to 20 percent. An extra year of secondary: 15 to 25 percent. Educated girls grow into educated women, and research shows that they have healthier babies and are more likely to share what they’ve learned with their families, children and communities.

When girls are educated, they don’t marry while they are still children.

When a girl in the developing world receives seven or more years of education, she marries four years later and has 2.2 fewer children.

2

Data shows that progress to reduce the number of children out of school in the developing world has stalled.

As of 2012, 58 million children of primary school age and another 63 million children of lower secondary school age were still out of school. The need for accessible quality education for children in the developing world continues to be crucial. Mona Foundation is supporting eleven educational partners in 2015. We aim to grow this number through our expanded fundraising efforts.

Partnering with Mona Foundation is an investment in economic and social health for communities all over the globe. Our core strategies of supporting gender equality and educational initiatives work because:

The principles of Universal education and investing in women are often found to be absolute requirements for eliminating the extremes of poverty in order to build a better world. In fact, World Bank data demonstrate that gender equality and economic development are inextricably linked. The data shows that equality not only guarantees basic rights, but also plays a vital role in promoting the robust and shared growth needed to end extreme poverty.

Who do We Support?

Our selection process for identifying new partner organizations is rigorous. The education partners must meet the following criteria:

1. Be founded and operated by residents of communities, because they know best about the educational needs of their own community.

2. Address a vital and significant deficit in the basic needs of children, which must include education, but also may include housing, food, and a nurturing environment.

3. Serve children of all backgrounds, regardless of age, race or ethnicity, religion, or economic status.

4. Demonstrate a track record of functioning efficiently and providing a positive impact. 5. Have the support of the local community. 6. Employ local administrators who have shown a long-term commitment to the development

of the program and are active participants in planning for the self-sustainability of their initiative.

7. Seek to uplift the status of women and girls. 8. Promote service to the community as a crucial aspect of education

This event brings together hundreds of our supporters who value our core strategies of gender equality and universal education. Every year we bring a speaker from one of our educational programs and provide the audience with the ability to learn from and be inspired by their work. This year we will be hosting the Administrator and Board member of Zunuzi and Georges Marcellus Schools in Haiti, Sue Puzo.

This prestigious event is also a celebration of all that we have achieved in the last year with the support of our donors and volunteers, who, by their service, volunteerism and commitment, allowed Mona Foundation to reach new heights and set future goals for which to strive.

Partner with us and enhance your company’s exposure at this event.

Even though much has been done, the need for Mona’s work outpaces our resources. To date, we’ve met all of our commitments to our partner projects while being able to maintain a low overhead through the generous support of donors of the foundation who’ve funded our operational costs. In order to increase our impact and continue this track record of value for donations, we must expand our fundraising efforts and we need your help to accomplish this.
