description

Modus Operandi is a publicationed created to challenege an artist/designer. The challenge is that they would have to create/design something every day, or every few days for a month. The would write about their ideas, process, and anything thing they want to really that is relevant. Also, during this process, they get to design the publication themselves. This includes how the cover looks, the dimensions, layout, ect. This would make every issue of this publication different and unique based upon the artist that had created it.

Inspiration can come to you at weird random moments of time. Probably once a day. Sometimes you act upon it and then at other times you store it away as a memory. Today is the first day I begin this challenge of design. I want to try my best to go off of that sporadic inspiration you get everyday and make something of it.

The project that I have made today would've never happened if I was not in the current situation that I had been in at the time. One of my roommates was making some scans in the l iving room. I was on the couch browsing the internet on my laptop. My other roommate decided to go off after this big fly that was roaming around our house. Several minutes later he caught and killed it. He brought

it out to the living room to show us and then put it on the table. That's when it clicked. I knew what I was going to do for this day. I was to scan the fly.

A few test scans in, I decided that I wanted to do more than just a scan of a fly. I wanted to put it in an environment of some sort. Of what though? The answer was right in front of me. There lying, was a frame with nothing in it. Empty. This was to be my composition. This is the scan that I wanted. Therefore comes the words "frame on fly" I added in. I say this because you see a f ly in/on a frame, but it 's actually the other way around.

-The frame is on top of the fly.

Sinuses suck. They real ly really suck! I recommend to not catch them if you don't have them already. If you do have allergies then I am sorry. I feel your pain. Mine have been going pretty out-of-hand recently. Headaches, runny nose, itchy eyes, your whole entire face feels congested, you know.. all that good stuff.

My runny nose was especially bad. I had to go out and get several boxes of tissue. After a few hours after opening the first box of tissues, I was already probably about halfway through. A couple more hours pass and the box is nearly to its shelf-life.

There must 've been an ocean of crumbled up tissues around my garbage can from myself almost missing every shot I took to throw away my tissues. I did

not want to do anything today but sleep. While staring at all the tissues though, I thought of an idea. I wanted to show how much sinuses suck by making something that could represent the irritation and waste that it takes out of you.

It was then I started to write the word s inuses wi th the crumbled up tissues holding onto my sinuses. Once finished with that, I wanted something else to stand along with the tissues to represent how oneself feels when their allergies come around. So I shattered the tissue box that I finished in a day.

-That is exactly how I felt.

I went thrift shopping today. I recommend for you to try it out if you do not do it quite often. You never know what you can find there. They are filled with inspiration, even if you do not see it right away. You have to be able to be creative and use your imagination.

The thing I did was that I decided to get a whole bunch of random objects, materials, whatever. Anything that I felt which could be molded into something else. One of the things I found was a bag of small white rocks. The bag was not meant to be opened though. I really still have no idea what its use was, but I felt it had a purpose when I saw it. That is why I bought it.

At home, I cut the bag open and poured the rocks out. There

was something about them being on my carpet that I had really liked. I had no idea what I was going to do from this point though. So I say down on my floor and took some time to gather my thoughts together.

The thing that I did know was that I wanted to express a message. So after some more thinking, I realized that I should express a message about exactly what I am doing here, making something into a sense of design. So I took the mess of rocks and spelled out:

- "design is what you make of/with it"

Primal Matter. Another way to say raw materials. This is what this day was about. To only use raw materials. I still had a bunch of things leftover from my thrift store journey the other day, so I decided to go off the concept to Photoshop in real life.

I posted a large paper canvas onto my wall and put some music on and started to go with my instincts to put together this piece. I constructed it trying to represent of what "layers" would be in Photoshop. I did this so I was able to move everything a round and p l a c e ob j e c t s above or below one another if I wanted to change placement within anything. I created this composition using only yarn, string, rocks, and a sushi roller.

I have to say that this took much longer than I expected it

to be when I started. It was a fun process though; being able to work with real materials to represent shapes or objects you would do digital ly. Once I finished the composition I had to decide of what I wanted to say on this piece. This was probably the most difficult part, in my opinion. I had been thinking about this during the whole construction of the piece as well . I wanted to try to convey a message to use raw materials and to not be scared and to go with an idea you created. That is why I decided on 'Primal Matter'.

In a s imple way 'pr imal ' can represent for yourself to be primal/original, and then the words 'primal matter' as a whole to represent the use of raw materials.

It is good to experiment and to try out ideas, weird or not. This project came to me while taking a shower actually. I started paying attention to the moisture on the walls and watched the water particles slowly drip down the surface. After that, I realized that our shower was pretty dirty and need a cleaning. I could not help but to still think of the dirtiness of the shower in my mind after. I made it seem a lot more dirty than which it actually was, but I envisioned it as almost black.

I really wanted to find a way to represent this. Thinking about the shower scene I was in, I began to mold together the dripping water with the scum of the shower. It was then I imagined a scene of a wall covered in black inside of the shower.

The water turns on and moisture starts attaching itself on to the black wall. The black of the wall begins to melt and drip down from the wall, making the white visible. As this is happening, the word "scum" slowly starts to appear and then it slowly starts to fade and drip away with the rest of the blackness on the wall until there is nothing more.

I tried my best to create my own interpretation of this scene inside of my mind. With the help of dry erase markers, the shower, and windex , I was able to create this representational experiment of the vision I had. This did not come out exactly how I envisioned it, but that is okay. This is the point of what today was, to

-try to create your own experiments and grow from there.

This is probably one of my favorite projects throughout this series. Only because it has a lot of meaning to me and I spent the most time of day on this one. I created my own character. Not one that you would draw out, but one that I had brought to life.

The concept for this project actually came to me the night before, while trying to fall asleep. Whenever I do, I tend to think way to much and I create some crazy visions within my mind. I'm sure we all do this though. Well, as this was going on, I pictured a man wearing a suit. He had no face. Instead, it was a faceless, white balloon-shaped figure. The moment I saw him, I couldn't get him out. That is when I decided that I must create this man!

The next day I went off to the thrift store to gather my materials for this character. I picked up a suit and some sheets to use for him. Then after that, I went to the hardware store to obtain wire to construct his head. I must say, constructing his head was a pain in the ass. This probably took 3-4 hours on its own. When finished, the feeling I had was great. I had my roommate dress up in the suit, put the head frame on and then covered it with the sheets. There he was, my character, just as I thought he would look like.

The point of me doing this project is to, in a sense, say that we all envision/dream up of crazy things, on this case characters.

-So act on what you see and try

to actually create it.

I'm starting to like the scanner more and more every time I used it. If you never tried to work with a scanner other than to copy something, I recommend to start playing with one more. I had a great time doing so and I was actually able to make something with nothing more than myself and the scanner.

I have always enjoyed seeing people who do these photocopy pictures of themselves for a portrait. The detail that you can receive is pretty amazing. So I decided to mess around with scanning my own face to try to create one of these portraits. I probably scanned my face over 20 times until I really started experimenting with this project.

First I wanted to portray the straight on face look. Then I started to see how it would be

if I were to turn my face and to put my hands on the scanner. Everything I was doing was not what I seemed to want to get from this experiment though. Then I realized that I should not experiment with placement of myself, but placement of how the scanner obtains its image. So I began to move my face into different positions as the scanner would scan over it. I had some pretty interesting outcomes from this method. This, still, was not exactly what I wanted from this experiment.

Finally, I made the decision to move my face up and down along with the bar that scans the images on the scanner as it scanned (now that's a lot of scans!) I was really amazed with what I received from this technique.

-here is my process_
