Model United Nations

Now you’re a delegate!

For four days, you step out of the normal you, and enter the role as a diplomat representing a government, working in a group - a so called delegation.

(PS. Don’t forget the diplomat dresscode!)

Research your countryStudy the politics, economy, religion and history of the country you’re representing. Most importantly - get to know the international relations of your country; organisations that you’re in (such as NATO and/or EU). What countries are your friends or foes?

Research your global issueModel UN deals with a number of global issues, such as “Measures to combat contemporary forms of slavery” and “Actions to increase access to clean water and sanitation”.

Write a resolution and a “proposition paper”

You will take part in making propositions for a better world

Committee WorkThe committees are: Human Rights, Peace, Disarmament & Security, Health & Environment.

NegotiationsYou get to convince, compromise and agree on solutions; lobbying is one of the key aspects of the roleplay.

UN General AssemblyYou get to hold speeches, debate and vote for the resolutions that fit your country’s agenda.

You will increase your knowledge of the UN framework.

You will get to know some of the most urgent issues that need to be resolved for a better world.

ReflectionYou will get to know different cultural and political perspectives.

The four days of Model UN

Monday, March

19th, 10.00-20.00

(preliminary)

Registration, opening ceremony, opening

speeches, lobbying. Late snack.

Tuesday, March

20th, 10.00-20.30

Approval panel and committee work.

Wednesday, March

21st, 08.30-21.30

Committee work continues. Dinner with all

participators.

Thursday, March

22nd, 08.20-16.30

General assembly, debate and voting

procedures, closing ceremony.

Time table for preparations

December/January

You will receive a confirmation on which country you will

represent, including information in what committee and

issue you will be working.

January

Start studying the country, its foreign policies and the issue

you have been given.

February

Write your resolution and position papers which is a short

statement about your country’s policies concerning all the

nine issues in the Model UN. This makes you prepared for

lobbying, debating and voting in the General Assembly.

March

In the beginning of March the resolutions will be sent in to

[email protected]

On Falu Frigymnasium´s web you will find all the resolutions in the

various issues. Now you prepare yourselves by reading all the

resolutions and prepare for lobbying. You also prepare for the role by

choosing proper clothing. There are two alternative dress codes;

strictly formal with suit/shirt and blouse with tie or traditional national

costume.

Human Rights Committee

1. Measures to combat contemporary forms of slavery

2. Measures to ensure women’s rights referring to equality and inclusion in social, economical and political life

3. Measures to agree on extended resettlement quotas for asylum seekers of specific needs and vulnerabilities

Peace, Disarmament and Security Committee

1. Issue concerning the conflict between Western Sahara and Morocco

2. Issue concerning stronger regulations regarding arms trade

3. Issue concerning prevention of organized terrorism

Health and Environment Committee

1. Actions to increase access to clean water and sanitation

2. Measures to provide sustainable, reliable, affordable energy for all

3. Actions to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and protect and prevent the extinction of

threatened species

Security Council

1. Peacebuilding and conflict prevention in South Sudan
