additional Safety for Notchers
No list of safety guidelines can be complete. Every shop environment is different. always consider safety first, as it applies to your individual working conditions. use this and other machinery with caution and respect. failure to do so could result in serious per-sonal injury, damage to equipment, or poor work results.
Like all machinery there is potential danger when operating this machine. accidents are frequently caused by lack of familiarity or failure to pay attention. use this machine with respect and caution to decrease the risk of operator injury. if normal safety pre-cautions are overlooked or ignored, serious personal injury may occur.
guaRDS. Keep all guards in place and in working order. if the guard is removed or not in position, fingers may be accidentally placed in the path of the blades, resulting in amputation, laceration, and cutting injuries during use.
HaNDS aND fiNgERS. if hands or fingers are in the path of the blades during use, severe injury may occur. Always keep hands and fingers away from the blade during notching operations.
OpERaTOR pOSiTiON. Keep all body parts out of the way of all moving parts to avoid the risk of amputation, laceration, and cutting injuries.
CapaCiTy. never exceed the rated capacity of this notcher. doing so could result in tool failure and impact injuries as a result of flying debris or sudden movement.
COMfORTabLE CuTTiNg OpERaTiONS. Avoid awkward operations and hand positions where a sudden slip could cause your hand or body to fall into a sharp edge or corner.
SHaRp EDgES. Sheet metal has sharp edges that can result in laceration injuries, especially right after it has been cut. Always wear heavy leather gloves when handling sheet metal, and deburr/chamfer the workpiece edges after cut-ting.

The unpainted surfaces of your machine are coated with a heavy-duty rust preventative that prevents corrosion during shipment and storage.
This rust preventative has been your machine's close ally and guardian since it left the factory. If your machine arrived to you free of rust, then be thankful that the rust preventative protected it during its journey...and try to stay thankful as you clean it off, because it can be challenging to remove if you are unprepared and impatient.
Plan on spending some time cleaning your machine. The time you spend doing this will reward you with smooth sliding parts and a better appreciation for the proper care of your machine's unpainted surfaces.
Although there are many ways to successfully remove the rust preventative, these instructions walk you through what works well for us.
Before cleaning, gather the following:• Disposable Rags• Cleaner/degreaser (see below)• Safety glasses & disposable gloves
Basic steps for removing rust preventative:
1. Put on safety glasses and disposable gloves.
2. Coat all surfaces that have rust preventative with a liberal amount of your cleaner/degreas-er and let them soak for few minutes.
3. Wipe off the surfaces. If your cleaner/degreas-er is effective, the rust preventative will wipe off easily.
Note: To clean off thick coats of rust preven-tative on flat surfaces, such as tables, use a PLASTIC paint scraper to scrape off the majority of the coating before wiping it off with your rag. (Do not use a metal scraper or you may scratch your machine.)
4. Repeat Steps 2–3 as necessary until clean, then coat all unpainted surfaces with a quality metal protectant to prevent rust.
Gasoline and petroleum products have low flash points and can explode or cause fire if used to clean machinery. Avoid using these products to clean machinery.
Many cleaning solvents are toxic if inhaled. Minimize your risk by only using these products in a well ventilated area.
NOTICEAvoid chlorine-based solvents, such as acetone or brake parts cleaner that may damage painted surfaces. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any type of cleaning product.
Note: In a pinch, automotive degreasers, mineral spirits or WD•40 can be used to remove rust pre-ventative. Before using these products, though, test them on an inconspicuous area of your paint to make sure they will not damage it.

Site Considerations
figure 4. minimum working clearances.
32"
183⁄8"
Weight LoadRefer to the Machine Data Sheet for the weight of your machine. Make sure that the surface upon which the machine is placed will bear the weight of the machine, additional equipment that may be installed on the machine, and the heaviest work-piece that will be used. Additionally, consider the weight of the operator and any dynamic loading that may occur when operating the machine.
Physical EnvironmentThe physical environment where your machine is operated is important for safe operation and the longevity of its components. For best results, operate this machine in a dry environment that is free from excessive moisture, hazardous chemi-cals, airborne abrasives, or extreme conditions. Extreme conditions for this type of machinery are generally those where the ambient temperature range exceeds 41°–104°F; the relative humidity range exceeds 20–95% (non-condensing); or the environment is subject to vibration, shocks, or bumps.
Children or untrained people may be seriously injured by this machine. Only install in an access restricted location.
LightingLighting around the machine must be adequate enough that operations can be performed safely. Shadows, glare, or strobe effects that may distract or impede the operator must be eliminated.Space Allocation
Consider the largest size of workpiece that will be processed through this machine and provide enough space around the machine for adequate operator material handling or the installation of auxiliary equipment. With permanent installations, leave enough space around the machine to open or remove doors/covers as required by the main-tenance and service described in this manual. See below for required space allocation.

Mounting
Because of the dynamic forces involved dur-ing operation of the notcher, it must be securely mounted to a flat and stable workbench or table that is capable of withstanding the weight of the tool and the forces of operation.
during operation, the waste from the cutting operation is ejected into the cavity in the tool base directly under the work table. We recommend mounting the notcher so that the front portion hangs over the edge of the workbench. this will allow the ejected waste to fall through the tool base cavity and onto the floor or into a waste bucket. otherwise, you will need to unbolt the notcher from the workbench every time you need to clear the built-up waste.

due to the forces applied during operation, we strongly recommend that you use a "through mount" setup (see figure 6) and that the work-bench is anchored to the floor or wall. this is the strongest option of mounting the notcher, where holes are drilled all the way through the workbench that match the mounting holes on the notcher, then the notcher is secured with 1⁄2" hex bolts, flat washer, and hex nuts.
Another option for mounting the notcher is the "direct mount" setup where it is simply secured to the workbench with a 1⁄2" lag screw and flat washer (see figure 7).

Creating Notches
there are two methods of making a 90° cut with the model t23101: 1) edge notching, or 2) pierc-ing the workpiece to make a 90° cut within its perimeter (see the illustrations in figure 10 for examples).
90° Notch
90° PiercingCut
Square MadeBy DoublePiercing
figure 10. example cuts.
As illustrated in the third example above, a square can be cut inside the perimeter of the workpiece by making two opposing piercing cuts.
Edge Notchingedge notching with the model t23101 makes a 90° notch on the edge of the workpiece. With the upper blades setup for this method, the cut begins from the outside and moves to the center point of the notch.
To make an edge notch:
1. make sure the upper blades are setup for edge notching, which is the default setup from the factory (refer to Reversing upper blades on page 19 for detailed instruc-tions).
2. make sure the blades are properly aligned (refer to blade alignment on page 17 for detailed instructions).
3. Wearing gloves and safety glasses or a face shield, place the workpiece on the work table, lining it up with the blades as needed.
injury to your feet could result when material is ejected from the bottom of the notcher. always wear heavy-toed leather footwear when operating this tool.
NOTICEOnly use the Model T23101 as it was designed. use of a cheater bar or other method of increasing leverage may exceed the tool capacities, resulting in possible failure and personal injury, and will void the warranty.
4. With a slow and steady motion, pull the lever down to move the upper blades into and through the workpiece. Continue pulling until the cut is complete.
5. lift the lever back to the uppermost position, then remove the workpiece.
NOTICETo avoid rolling the edges of the sheet metal and pinching them between the blades, only cut workpieces that have lengths on each side of the blades that are NOT short-er than eight times the thickness of the material. for instance, if using 16 gauge mild steel that is 0.06" thick, make sure that the workpiece lengths on both sides of the blades are at least 1⁄2".
model t23101 4-ton notcher (mfg. Since 8/10) -15-
piercing Cutspiercing cuts begin within the perimeter of the workpiece and move away from the center point of the notch. By making two opposing piercing cuts that are properly aligned, you can make a square inside the workpiece (see the third illustration in figure 10 on the previous page).
Work Stops
the model t23101 has adjustable stops attached to the work table that allow rapid alignment of workpieces for repetitive operations.
the scales underneath the work stops are for relative measurement.
To use the work stops:
1. Align the workpiece as necessary on the table and make the desired cut. Check that the cut meets your requirements.
2. once the cut is to your standards, lower the blade so that the top blades are below the level of the table.
3. position the workpiece on the work table so that the workpiece rests against the top blades (see figure 11).
4. Adjust the work stops as necessary to pro-vide adequate support and proper alignment with the workpiece, then tighten the work stop knobs (see figure 11).
5. remove the workpiece and return the lever to the uppermost position.
6. For additional cuts, place the workpiece against the work stops and make the cut.
figure 11. Work stops.
Workpiece
Work Stop

Worktable
To make a piercing cut:
1. reverse the upper blades from the default edge notching setup (refer to Reversing upper blades on page 19 for detailed instructions).
2. make sure the blades are properly aligned (refer to blade alignment on page 17 for detailed instructions).
3. Wearing gloves and safety glasses or a face shield, place the workpiece on the work table so that the corner of the desired pierce is directly under the point where the upper blades meet.
Note: To properly align the workpiece with the blades, you may need to remove the work stops and the throat bolt (refer to Throat Bolt on Page 16 for detailed instructions).
4 With a slow and steady motion, bring the lever down to move the blades through the workpiece. Continue to pull until the length of the cut is correct for your operation.
5. raise the lever back to the uppermost posi-tion, then remove the workpiece.
— if you are making a square, rotate the workpiece 180° and repeat Steps 3–5.
NOTICEWhen the Model T23101 is setup for pierc-ing cuts, the additional forces required to make this type of cut reduce the maximum cutting thickness to 18 gauge mild steel.
-16- model t23101 4-ton notcher (mfg. Since 8/10)
Depth Stops
the model t23101 is equipped with depth stops to limit the vertical travel of the top blades. these must be adjusted to allow enough travel to complete the cut. As the blades wear and are re-sharpened, it may be necessary to adjust the depth stops to achieve the necessary travel.
To adjust the depth stop:
1. loosen the jam nuts on the depth stop bolts (see figure 12).
2. Adjust the depth stop bolts to provide ade-quate blade travel, then re-tighten the jam nuts without turning the depth stop bolts.
figure 12. Depth stop adjustment.
depth Stop Bolt
Jam nut
Throat bolt
removing the throat bolt will allow performing slitting and shearing operations where the workpiece needs to be positioned square with the blade. the upper blades can be arranged in different configurations depending upon the needs of the operation.
Use a 4mm hex wrench to loosen the set screw that secures the bolt (see figure 13), then use an 18mm wrench or socket to remove the throat bolt.
NOTICEaLWayS replace the throat bolt before per-forming operations that require both upper blades to be mounted, such as notching. The throat bolt supports the upper cast-ing of the throat and prevents the cast iron from cracking under the dynamic forces of normal notching operations.

figure 17. Eliminating blade gap.
aligning Lower blades1. loosen the six cap screws located inside the
notcher base cavity on the underside of the lower blades (see figure 18).
— if the notcher mounting position does not allow access to these cap screws, you will need to remove the mounting hardware and carefully tip the notcher on its side to complete this procedure.

3. move the blades back from the path of the upper blades, then pull the lever forward to lower the upper blades past the lower blades.
Note: In the next step, a gap between the lower and upper blades of 0.002"–0.004" is acceptable for most applications. To be more exact, the gap should be approximately 6% of the workpiece thickness.
4. Use the feeler gauges to set the proper gap between the lower and upper blades, then, without moving the lower blades, snug the blade positioning plate hex bolts against the lower blades.
5. While keeping the lower blades firmly against the positioning plate hex bolts, re-tighten the lower blade cap screws to secure the set-tings.
6. perform a test cut on a scrap piece of stock and, if necessary, repeat this procedure until you are satisfied with the results.
Reversing blades
upper bladesthe upper blades can be mounted for either edge notching or piercing, as illustrated in figure 20. note that the lower end of the blade makes con-tact with the workpiece first and begins the cut with the rest of the blade providing the shearing action.

Lower bladesWhen the cutting edge of the lower blades becomes dull, mount the blade so that a fresh edge faces the upper blades. When all four edges are dull, re-sharpen them (see Sharpening blades on page 24 for details) or replace them.
NOTICEafter re-mounting the blades, perform the Blade Alignment procedure on Page 17 to ensure a safe and efficient cutting opera-tion.
NOTICETo avoid rolling the edges of the sheet metal and pinching them between the blades, only cut workpieces that have lengths on each side of the blades that are NOT short-er than eight times the thickness of the material. for instance, if using 16 gauge mild steel which is 0.06" thick, make sure that the workpiece lengths on both sides of the blades are at least 1⁄2".

For optimum performance from the notcher, follow this maintenance schedule and refer to any spe-cific instructions given in this section.
Ongoing Check:• loose mounting bolts.• Worn or damaged blades.• proper blade alignment.• Any other unsafe condition.
Daily Maintenance:• Clean and lubricate.
Schedule
Cleaning the model t23101 is relatively easy. Use a brush and a shop vacuum to clean away any metal debris, then, with gloved hands and shop rags, wipe clean all metal surfaces.
Keep the unpainted metal surfaces rust-free with regular applications of products like g96® gun treatment, Slipit®, or Boeshield® t-9 (refer to page 21 for options from grizzly).
Cleaning & protecting
Lubrication
bladesUse an oil can to apply SAe 30 oil or equivalent to the blade surfaces frequently during operation. this will reduce the friction between the metal surfaces of the workpiece and blades, which will reduce the blade wear and increase the quality of the cut.
Ram & pivot pointsto reduce wear and ensure smooth operation, frequently apply SAe 30 oil or equivalent between the sliding surfaces of the ram and cover (see figures 28–29), the shaft bushing, and the oil hole in the lever base.

When all edges on the lower blades have reached the end of their usable life, or the upper blades become dull, they can be reground by using wet grinding techniques for SK-4 metal or better. if sharpening services are not available in your area, replacement knives are available through grizzly.com.
Only sharpen the short edges of the lower blades (see figure 30), and the bottom edge of the upper blades (see figure 31).

adjusting Ram Movement
to ensure accurate cuts and to keep the blades from binding, the ram must move smoothly straight up and down through its vertical path.
ram movement was correctly set at the factory. however, with normal wear, it may need to be re-adjusted.
the vertical movement of the ram is adjusted by using the cap and set screws on the ram cover (see figure 32). this procedure is a matter of trial and error until the ram moves smoothly and has enough drag to keep it in place when you release the lever.
