Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is situated at a distance of 130 km south east of Delhi on
the Delhi-Kolkata railway line and National Highway 2. It occupies a unique position
amongst universities and institutions of higher learning in the country. It was established in
1920 and evolved out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College) which
was set up in 1877 by the great visionary and social reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. From its
very inception, it has kept its door open to the members of all communities and from all
corners of the country and the world. The Aligarh Muslim University is the realization of the
broad, far- reaching and realistic goals of the visionaries of the Aligarh Movement.
AMU is spread over 467.6 hectares in the city of Aligarh and offers more than 300 courses in
the traditional and modern branches of education. It draws students from all states in India
and from different countries, especially Africa, West-Asia and South-East Asia. In some
courses, seats are reserved for students from SAARC and Common-Wealth Countries. The
university is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender.
AMU has more than 30000, students, 1400 teachers and some 6000 non-teaching staff on
its rolls. The university comprises of a wide spectrum of academic disciplines and now has 13
faculties comprising 107 departments of studies, 7 colleges, 19 centres, 3 institutes, 2
polytechnics, 10 schools and 3 off campus AMU centres. A special feature of the university is
its residential character with most of the staff and students residing within the campus. There
are 19 halls of residence for students with 80 hostels.
The department of Applied Sciences was established in 1958 in the Faculty of Engineering
and Technology which was subsequently split into 3 sections namely, Chemistry, Physics and
Mathematics. In January 1988, the chemistry section was upgraded to a full-fledged
Department of Applied Chemistry.
The department is mainly engaged in the teaching of Applied Chemistry/Materials Science/
Atmospheric Chemistry to the B.Tech. students and PG diploma in Environmental Chemistry
(Center of Professional Courses). The department is also offering Ph.D. program in Applied
Chemistry. The first Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry was awarded in the year 1991. Since then,
the total number of M.Phil. and Ph.D. produced by the department has gone to 42 and 106
respectively.
The department has started a P.G. Course, M.Sc. In Polymer Science and Technology, with an
intake of 20 students from the academic session 2013 – 2014.
