1. Education is no longer restricted to the bookish knowledge and the four walls of colleges and

universities. Apart from the activities in the classrooms, laboratories and libraries, a student has an

opportunity to find out and express his hidden potential in the form of various extra- curricular

activities. Youth festival are the best platform for extra- curricular activities.

2. It is essential for the all-round development of a student that he should participate in one or the

other activity. There are many extra-curricular activities. Some of them are declamation, debate,

histrionics, mimicry, painting, music, dance, singing, poetical recitation, etc.

3. Mere classroom studies make it boring and monotonous and students need some outlet for their

energies. They need opportunities for entertainment also. Youth festivals are the spice of academic

life. When students prepare for various items, they have a sense of achievement, a sense of doing

something useful. Preparing the stage for the show, receiving the guest artists from other

institutions and looking after them, inculcate in them a sense of responsibility, co-operation and

tolerance.

4. As the competitions of these youth festivals are organised among students of almost the same

age, they get rid of stage phobia. They no longer feel shy of the audience and the stage. They learn to

face the audience. Thus they cultivate self-confidence.

5. Youth festivals are the best means to search the talent among the youth. These budding artists

will become the singers, actors and orators of tomorrow. Youth festivals prove to be the stepping

stones for the future real life. Absence of youth festivals makes a student’s life insipid and boring. As

such, students take to subversive activities. If they remain busy in preparing for competition in

youth festivals, their time is used in productive and fruitful way.

Literacy means “ability to read and write” the act of being educated. Literacy is an essential need for

development. The countries with low literacy have are economically failed and their progress rate

is very slow. The personality of an individual is polished if he or she is educated, but an illiterate

person can be disrespected in the society. The value of literacy can be imagined by taking the

example of some African areas where literacy rate is much below the average; therefore they are

still working as slaves of other countries.

To produce sense and awareness about the value of literacy and education, United Nations

Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) announced to celebrate International

Literacy Day on 8th September every year. This was decided in 1965 and from 1966 onwards this

day is celebrated on 8th September. Every year UNO organises conferences and seminars to

highlight the importance of literacy. Governments of all countries also organise programs and

expeditions to aware to people about literacy. Government force people to get necessary education

and send their children to school. Literacy program are also organised at school and college level

,where the students present speeches and models to demonstrate the value of literacy.

Parents have an important role in the development of children, but if the parents are illiterate, they

are not able to cope with the needs of new century, so that their children suffer. So, programs must

be organized to teach the parents to read and write. Such step must be taken so that any child

should not be deprived of going to school. It is their right to get education. We should promise

ourselves on this coming International Literacy Day we will be the part of a literacy campaign.
