DRAKE MUSIC SCOTLAND and THE EDINBURGH SCHOOLS JAZZ ORCHESTRA: At The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh. Premiere -‘Wagner’s School of Cool’ by Lewis Forbes. Following on from last year’s successful collaboration between Drake Music Scotland and the Edinburgh Schools Jazz Orchestra, pupils from three city special schools will perform with their peers from ESJO in a new work which draws inspiration from musical sources that might at first seem to be polar opposites. The ‘School of Cool’ - The whole project is inspired by BBC Ten Pieces, an initiative that is designed to encourage school pupils to ‘get creative with classical music’ in response to 10 selected pieces. Alongside the wonderful saxes, horns and rhythm section of Edinburgh Schools Jazz Orchestra groups of senior pupils from Braidburn, Kaimes and Woodlands special schools are playing their parts using the intriguing technologies that Drake Music Scotland employs - such as the Soundbeam, various switches, iPads and the ‘Skoog’ – to provide access for those with disabilities. Others use Figurenotes notation, which Drake Music Scotland has introduced to help them learn to read music and play melodies, solos and harmony parts on keyboards, guitar and bass just like their non-disabled peers. Black Water album back in 2011. When her equally-impressive follow-up, Stardust, hit the UK in 2014, there was an instantaneous collective gasp as radio presenters and writers discovered this very special talent and began to sing her praises here too. Bob Harris was first to declare himself a fan and playing tracks on his BBC Radio 2 shows repeatedly, told listeners he thought her music was "absolutely gorgeous - really special!". Renowned across America for their exhilarating performances and great playing, The Railsplitters, working out of the Colorado Rockies, have made a huge impact in recent times. Playing with the kind of grace and confidence expected from their elders, they have a real depth of character and formidable talent, drawing influences from all the greats - including Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs. www.bronwynnebrent.com www.facebook.com/therailsplittersbluegrass www.brookfield-knights.com 22 APRIL DROPKICK with support from ANDY TUCKER and special guests THE WYNNTOWN MARSHALS: At The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh. Almost Blue Promotions Presents ….. DANNI NICHOLLS + support COLIN CLYNE: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. Doors 7.30pm. From a young age, Danni Nicholls was soaking up American folk, country and rock n roll music from her Grandmother’s record collection in her small home town of Bedford. When she inherited her Uncle Heathcliff’s 1963 Burns London Shortscale Jazz guitar (rumoured to have belonged to Billy Fury!) aged 16, all those influences came pouring back out in the form of her own original material and has been flowing ever since. With performances guaranteed to melt your heart into the soles of your cowboy boots, her passionate delivery, powerful, velvet voice and charmingly engaging between-song banter compel you to fall under her spell. A native of Stonehaven, Colin Clyne now divides his time between his homeland and Southern California, with a sizeable following in each. In August 2012, Clyne attended The San Diego Music Awards in California, where he was crowned as the 'Best Acoustic Act'. Remarkably, Clyne also won this award in 2011. www.AlmostBluePromotions.com 17 APRIL
