He found pieces of paper with tunes and notes of the stories that had inspired them, and Niall realized that he had discovered something very special. As 2015 approached, the family wanted to find a way of creating a positive memory for the family and the community, and the idea of publishing a book of Calum’s tunes was first mooted. DEAN OWENS & THE WHISKY HEARTS with PATTY GRIFFIN: At City Halls, Glasgow for Celtic Connections. Describing his sound as ‘Celtic Americana from Leith via Nashville’, Dean Owens ranks among Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters. He

performs here with his all-star band, showcasing his rave-reviewed 2015 album Into the Sea. The inspirations Patty Griffin cites behind her stylistically restive, grittily passionate 2015 album Servant of Love - magical realist literature; African-American author/activist James Baldwin; the transcendentalist writings of Rumi, Emerson and Rilke - richly reaffirm the fearless individuality of her twenty years’ output. After gracing 2015’s Transatlantic Sessions, Griffin’s exceptional voice and songwriting ensure a warm welcome back. Stoneyport Associates presents ….. ANDA UNION: At St Bride's Centre, Edinburgh. The brilliant 9-piece band Anda Union from Inner Mongolia first toured the UK in 2013 and stole the show everywhere. The band members all grew up in families 'with the music', several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way, and came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city. There they were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian but with a strong appeal to a western sensibility. If you miss this opportunity to see the band live in Edinburgh, you can be assured of hearing about the concert for a long time afterwards from those who were lucky enough to get tickets in time @

JOSEPHINE SILLARS: At The Skylark in Edinburgh. Josephine has just launched her new single to a sell-out King Tuts audience. ‘Vincent’ was written after Josephine discovered that Vincent Van Gogh ‘used to eat yellow paint to make his insides happy’. An upbeat song about beating hearts, serotonin highs and yellow walls, played on piano, xylophone and drums. The new single follows on from an extremely successful year for the young singer, from Inverness whose debut EP ‘Ripped from the Wire’ was released as recently as March this year, and followed shortly by her first headline tour. With her quirky voice and style, Josephine has been quickly gathering support and praise from a plethora of blogs and music pundits, and has also been compared with the iconic style of piano front-man Ben Folds. www.facebook.com/josephinesillarsmusic 12 FEBRUARY

They make all their music in Suse’s flat, self-engineering and self-producing everything. Brookfield Knights presents ….. CAM PENNER & JON WOOD: At Tron Theatre, Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections. Cam Penner & Jon Wood headline their own

show at The Tron Theatre on January 16. When they last toured the UK and Ireland, the reviews were as glowing as the performances and followed them wherever they went. Maverick writer Paul Kerr said they were “mesmerising,” while (writing at AmericanaUK), Mike Ritchie said: “Masterful - an utterly compelling duo - brilliant!” They return from their base in Canada after winning major TV exposure when tracks from the To Build A Fire album were chosen as the backdrop to the recent BBC 2 drama based on Iain Banks’ Stonemouth novel. Almost elevated to “folk” royalty, Merenda And Ungar have the kind of pedigree that ensures they always draw big crowds to the ‘live’ shows – great celebrations that range from rollicking rock to sparse acoustic balladry and classic R&B-influenced rave ups. www.celticconnections.com www.brookfield-knights.com 20 JANUARY

Bags of Rock: Starting out as an instrumental act Glasgow’s Bags of Rock have evolved into a full-on, vocal-driven heavy metal powerhouse with a sound described by many industry figures as unique. Their original compositions mix Annihilating Guitars and the Great Highland Bagpipes with influences from Techno to Dub and Hip Hop. All of this headed up by an honest Scottish vocal and underpinned by an exceptionally high level of musicianship displayed by all seven band members. EK Decay: are a rock band who come form East Kilbride. They were formed back in 2013 by 4 lads who were bored with the bland mainstream music scene in the west of Scotland. Transatlantic Sessions: At Celtic Connections in Glasgow. Folk musicians come together in what have been called 'the greatest backporch shows ever' www.celticconnections.com www.facebook.com/Transatlantic-Sessions-125763630806900 ANDA UNION: At The Mackintosh Church, Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections, 7.30pm. If you miss this opportunity to see the band live in Edinburgh, you can be assured of hearing about the concert for a long time afterwards from those who were lucky enough to get tickets in time! www.facebook.com/andaunion 31 JANUARY

They make all their music in Suse’s flat, self-engineering and self-producing everything. Big Burns Supper Dumfries 22-30 January We will present our fifth Festival in 2016 and will include our famous Spiegeltent venue and some of our award winning production of Le Haggis which runs throughout the Festival. Inspired by the celebration, rather than the idea that to be at a Burns Supper – you had to have a degree in Scots Literature – our festival is about coming together to celebrate with your friends, pals and visitors around Burn’s Night. It is the only place in the World where you can enjoy all that a Win-ter Festival has to offer, soak up all the places that Robert Burn’s used to love – in the way that he left him, pay tribute at his burial site and still find time to see cutting edge and contemporary work one of Scotland’s cosiest, yet confident towns. www.bigburnssupper.com

MAY

Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival Dumfries and Galloway 20-29 May Our 9-day festival has taken place since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international per-formers of the highest quality to a region con-taining many scattered rural communities since then this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and we’re proud to also be able to present these artistes from time to time. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the vis-ual arts and films. Events take place in a range of venues throughout the region, from large to small, formal to informal, urban to rural. www.dgartsfestival.org.uk

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 26-29 May Once again we have some big names coming north to join in the fun in May, and from the ceilidh bands to the almost indie strand, we have brought together a broad mix of artists that we hope appeals to everyone’s interpreta-tion of the increasingly expansive folk genre. As ever, our local traditions and musicians – both established and emerging – will be centre stage alongside those visiting the festival. You would be hard pushed to find another festival through-out the country that has such a strong home representation, and it is one that we are hugely proud of. www.orkneyfolkfestival.com
