performers from the Children’s Mod held earlier this autumn in Oban. The premier Gaelic music and language festival got off to a great start not just with the weather but the impressive children’s competitions. Saturday was the first day of the Mod with youngsters to the fore in musical competitions. On Monday the singing competitions began with young learners taking part while the following day, the competitions were aimed at native speakers. A selection of winners from all three days will be shown including the winners of the James C MacPhee medals and also the young girl and boy who won the Comunn Gàidhealach Silver Medals, Emily Robertson and Ruairidh Gray. Trusadh – Ceòl Chaluim / Calum’s Music: 9pm on BBC ALBA. In January 2005, three generations of the same family lost their lives on one tragic night as they tried to flee the hurricane that was battering the islands. Murdina and Archie MacPherson and their two children all perished, as did Murdina’s father, Calum Campbell. Calum, who was 67, was well known as a piper and piping instructor and had also composed some tunes. The extent of his compositional work wasn’t apparent until his son Niall embarked on the difficult task of sorting through his father’s effects. He found pieces of paper with tunes and notes of the stories that had inspired them, and Niall realized that he had discovered something very special. As 2015 approached, the family wanted to find a way of creating a positive memory for the family and the community, and the idea of publishing a book of Calum’s tunes was first mooted. The band members all grew up in families 'with the music', several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way, and came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city. There they were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian but with a strong appeal to a western sensibility. Speyfest Moray 29-31 July At the end of July, the playing fields on East Street in the Moray town of Fochabers will be home to the 21st annual Speyfest, three days of the best in traditional and contemporary Celtic music. The tented village hosts a variety of seated and standing events including the Friday and Saturday concerts and stomps, the music marathon that is the Speyfest Family Sunday, a craft and food fair and an ecumenical Celtic Kirk service.
