DEAN OWENS & The WHISKY HEARTS: At Spiegeltent, Edinburgh. Velvet-voiced Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer songwriters, with fans including Bob Harris, Irvine Welsh and Russell Brand. Dean’s music has been described as Celtic Americana with a

rocky pop edge, and draws as much from his Scottish roots, especially his home town of Leith (referenced and loved by the Proclaimers) as from his US heroes. The emotional honesty in his songs shines through as he sings about people and places, love and regrets, drawing favourable comparisons with the likes of Springsteen. A gritty yet lyrical Scottish sensibility, delivered with a searingly soulful voice. www.deanowens.com SKJØR (pronounced ‘sure’) EP launch with support from SUBSTREAM and FORTITUDE DARLING: At Electric Circus in Edinburgh. Soundhouse at The Traverse presents ….. THE WIYOS and OLD DOLLAR BILL: At The Traverse Bar, Edinburgh. 8pm, £10. When Seasick Steve described The Wiyos as a band that would surprise, it was a right-on-the-money observation. The Wiyos have continued to develop a richly-ornamented original character that has matured to breath-taking effect. Each time they return to bring their stylish razzmatazz to the UK and remind us the meaning of goodtime, their audience just gets bigger and bigger. www.soundhouse.org.uk www.thewiyos.com www.brookfield-knights.com/up-coming-tours.html Red Note Assembly presents ….. SIMON KENNEDY BAND: At The Voodoo Rooms, 19a West Register Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2AA. Doors open at 7.15pm. Described by Blues & Rhythm “The UK’s premier Blues outfit - the most powerful and authentic sounding blues… in twenty years”, Big Joe & his band are commonly referred to as Europe's premier exponents of 'fifties down-home and Chicago blues. Together the outfit have been the UK’s first choice to accompany visiting American traditional/down-home Blues artists From the downhome sound of the Delta to contemporary blues rock riffage, the Edinburgh Blues Club showcases every shade of blues with its eagerly anticipated new programme. The Edinburgh Blues Club is a Social Enterprise established to harness popular support for regular blues events in Edinburgh. http://edinburgh-blues.uk C DUNCAN: At Pleasance Theatre, Edinburgh. To hear C Duncan’s music is to grasp those two common threads between his interests in classical and modern music. The pieces that make up his Mercury Prize nominated debut album are formed from lush choral harmonies and acoustic instrumentation, textured like contemporary dreampop and all recorded at home in Glasgow on his bedroom studio setup, gradually built up one layer and one instrument at a time. The results of this methodical and isolationist recording process give us charming lo-fi folk with the harmonic width of choral composition, the sweetness of barbershop and the rough eloquence that has so readily soundtracked Glasgow over the past decades. www.facebook.com/mrchrisduncan Hirda A New Opera In Scotland: At The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh. Soundhouse at The Traverse presents ….. THE JOHN LANGAN BAND: At The Traverse Bar, Edinburgh. 8pm, £10. A dynamic three piece offering a unique sound emerging from Celtic, Gypsy Swing, Roma and Flamenco, they deliver high energy, unhinged, and musically extravagant grooves. The trio, made up of John Langan on guitar and lead vocals, Dave Tunstall on double bass and vocals, and Alastair Caplan on fiddle and vocals, confound the limitations of what people might expect acoustic instruments to sound like: the use of bowed harmonics between fiddle and bass can be as menacing and eerie as it can be psychedelic and mesmerising. www.soundhouse.org.uk THE VACCINES: At The Usher Hall, Edinburgh. www.facebook.com/thevaccines 9 DECEMBER

Soundhouse at The Traverse presents ….. THE ROAMIN’ JASMINE: At The Traverse Bar, Edinburgh. 8pm, £10. Forged out of the lively street music scene in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the members of The Roamin’ Jasmine found one another busking under the swampy Louisiana sun, along the banks of the Mississippi, or after hours in storefronts on Royal, Frenchmen and Decatur Streets. The Roamin’ Jasmine repertoire explores 1920s era speakeasy blues, vintage Calypso from Trinidad, seminal 1950s New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, and original compositions, all set to traditional jazz instrumentation with original arrangements. Through polyphonic collective improvisation inherent in their new homeland of New Orleans, the Roamin’ Jasmine hold true to a great New Orleans jazz tradition while participating in its evolution with undertones of different eras and places. www.soundhouse.org.uk 17 DECEMBER

St Boswells Live! presents ….. ZŰRÖS BANDA: At St Boswell’s Hall, Scottish Borders. No doubt any tabloid would introduce Zűrös Banda as a Hungarian world music “supergroup”.
